A long rival of Zelda's, the pretentious and beautiful Rochelle Kincheloe, invites Zelda to a swanky soirée if only because of their long acquaintanceship. Rochelle can't help rub it in to her that Zelda will attend dateless, as there is no way that she could attract a man. Angry, Zelda concocts a story that she indeed will be attending alone as her fiancé, the devoted serviceman Dobie Gillis, cannot get away from camp. In reality, Zelda recently sent Dobie her version of a "Dear John" letter, despite Dobie never having wanted anything to do romantically with Zelda. As he is indeed away, Zelda concocts a further plan to rub Rochelle's nose in her "engagement" bliss by having her friend Jenny telephone her pretending to be Dobie, and send her flowers again supposedly from Dobie, all in front of Rochelle. Zelda figures the only way her plan will fail is if Dobie gets a leave from camp, which she knows won't happen as she has heard from Winnie that Dobie has too many demerits for the week to get a leave. However, what ends up happening is that an administrative error does result in Dobie's entire unit, including those ineligible due to demerits such as Dobie, being issued a leave. Zelda will just have to hope that Dobie and Rochelle's paths do not cross during his leave.
