Refreshing to see something produced in Oz that is not in the "reality" genre. A dark comedy with very witty one-liners which many older fathers with grown up daughters will relate to. Casting and acting is excellent.

Whether Mr Black tickles your funny bone or not, you can't deny it's very well made television. It's smart and strong enough to stand on its own two feet, but on a general level, we need to encourage comedy on commercial television in Australia. To that end, Channel Ten should be congratulated for getting behind comedies that aren't just sketch or panel.

Really growing on me

I came to Mr Black reluctantly because the promos turned me off. They rendered what has turned out to be an hilarious and complex morality tale to be quite two dimensional. But I persisted and I'm glad I did. This is one of my favourite Australian comedies. It's smart, dry and full of wit. Stephen Curry is magnificent and Nick Russell and Sophie Wright are going to be stars. Last night's episode (episode 4) with its gun ownership theme is my favourite yet. Beautifully realised and I hope Channel 10 make more of it.
Hilarious

Comedy misfire

We lasted till the 'questionnaire scene' before the crowd cried 'turn it over'. There was no investment in building the characters before they were unleashed with all their bizarre eccentricities and failings. As a result I found the rapid fire of outrageous events that followed difficult to believe. The idea of Mr Black is good, it just felt like it needed to ease me into his outrageous behaviour, not slap me in the face with it.
Just loved it

'Got a pony running in the 7th at Eagle Farm"

This is a very funny show that perfectly captures the nuances of living in Australia. So many hilariously dry one liners and laugh out loud situations. Anyone who's had to live with their partner's parents will relate. I found the shooting style, performances and general tone spot on and I can't wait to watch the whole season again - this time, without ads. Great stuff.
Excellent

This is a sitcom that Australians can be proud of. Story, characters, one liners - it's all world class. Casting is top notch with Stephen Curry clearly having a lot of fun as the cantankerous Mr Black, and pairing him up with the comedic talents of Nick Russell makes this show an absolute joy. I can't wait to see where this series goes from here
Not funny, the 10 star reviews are fakes
Hotdesio25 May 2019
After reading the 10 star reviews I was looking forward to a black comedy but alas it wasn't even a shade of grey. The opening scene where an old guy in a motorised scooter gets out and starts smashing up a car with his walking stick and the young guy just sits there, I'm sorry, it lost me there. I watched the first two episodes to give it a fair chance but it was just silly on so many levels. I love a good comedy and black humour is right up my street but this was just a middle of the road sitcom. In fairness it should be a 4 out of 10 but to counter balance the fake 10's I have given it a 1. Australian Gogglebox is much funnier than this.
Just brilliant

Low expectations, should have been lower.

Australian sitcom? I'm not sure why, but success is rare. I guess it's difficult.
The basic story line could be amusing, the acting is reasonable to good. Watching and hoping to laugh is being very optimistic. It just seems disjointed and clunky.
I might watch ep. 2. After all, it can't get any worse. Can it??

An absolute crack up!

It has been a long time since this kind of show ie a show that makes me crack up. Steve Curry and the rest of the cast have nailed 'hilarious. I hope it runs on for many seasons!! Kind of reminds me of Kingswood Country.
Such a shame as Australia used to do comedy very well

I watched this as it was sold as a young guy trying to impress his girlfriends father while they exist in the same time but from opposite worlds. the description that I just gave is what I think many would expect where the Father is used to things a certain way and normal but the world seems to have shifted at a 90 degree angle suddenly and things that were acceptable in everyday life suddenly are not. The young guy has entered his teens and adulthood in this new way of life and lives it well so there would be a clash and a funny one too. This show does non of that in any form. What it is trying to do is push an agenda that the Father is just mean and an impossible person just like all people who suddenly finding themselves not able to express their opinions like they used to as it will offend somebody. As I mentioned before it is an agenda, whether marxist who knows but there are no laughs in any manner. Give it a miss.
Hilarious. I'm surprised it was on C10.

Steven Curry is ridiculously funny as Mr Black. Each episode has a far fetched storyline and is done so well. Great comedy.
I agree with another reviewer, you'll either love it or hate it.
Nick Russell is also brilliant, he's perfect in the role.
I've watched it so many times. So well written, directed. We have no idea how they got through some of these scenes without rolling on the floor laughing x
The music is hilarious too.
I am surprised that channel 10 ran with it as there are several low brow bits.
Wish there was a second season!!! I'm sure they had a lot of fun making this.

Terrible and dated
archbarj11 May 2019
Terrible, dated and not funny! As always is the case with Australian TV, there's no diversity in the casting and the jokes are old. The characters feel like cardboard cutouts with no depth or nuance. Channel 10 needs to find a new set of writers not associated with Offspring (which was semi-relevant a decade or so ago, but not anymore!) to create a successful TV show. The overwhelmingly positive reviews for this show seem to be fake and written by people who were employed to write positive reviews since there are no other reviews under their belt (it annoyed me enough to sign up for an account and write this).
Not funny, annoying
