Frustrating
blackolig3 January 2021
After having been drawn in by the first 15 minutes, I was disappointed to find that the rest of the film was a banal, bland, sans-erotic orgy. It's worth watching for about 45 minutes as the filming techniques are compelling; Serra captures the feeling of midnight cruising like no one else. I constantly found myself challenged by the play of shadows and body. 5 stars for technique.

Two hours of clothes fx and cricket soundtrack
rodrigo-2733919 December 2019
The film somehow tries to make a reflection about pleasure, pain and its popular acceptance, but it fails to do so: dialogues are vague, weak and unmeaningful, and the action simply portrays a series not-mainstream sex scenes (i.e. anus eating and peeing) aimed to provoke an uneasy feeling to the untrained spectator. On the other hand, the lightning, costumes and make up were good, but not enough to watch it again. Nonetheless, it's always an interesting experience to be confronted to these kind of films, it may turn out well for you!

A Not-Very-Hard Day's Night
BNester31 July 2019
It's impossible to write spoilers for this film, since there is no plot to spoil. The film is just a record of an all-night orgy in a European forest around the time of the French Revolution. The participants are a group of international noblemen and women, and their servants.

It takes place at night in a dark forest, so you hardly see anything, and when you do see something, you're not sure what it is. Although the participants talk of wild erotic fantasies, what they actually do is pathetic, boring, and grim. Male masturbation, urinating, and getting whipped seem to be the extent of their perversions. You see several penises, none erect. Nobody seems to be having much fun at this orgy. Participating in it seems to be as unpleasant as watching it. Mostly, you see lots of people standing around doing nothing for long periods of time. It's supposed to be erotic, but the astonishing thing is: it's so boring!

The only reason I can think of for seeing this film is titillation. But you will see far more in a 3-minute clip on an internet porn site than you will find in this endless film. It's over two hours long, and feels more like 5. I give this film one star, for the costumes and makeup, which manage to make each male look uglier than the next. If being depraved and debauched offers such poor benefits, I think I will stay praved and bauched. Perhaps that's the director's intention.

\When the film started, the cinema was full. By the time it finished, there were only about 10 viewers left.

I want my 1 star back please!
kivancozsahin7 October 2019
I gave 1 star just because 0 is not possible. Nothing can evacuate a movie theater faster than this film, including a poisonous gas attack. All we saw throughout 2 hours was a bunch of zombie-like men and women pissing on each other. There is nothing aesthetical, artistic, creative in the movie. Characters are pure psychopaths with empty eyes who lack sexual imagination. They do not arouse any sexual feelings. All they do is make you vomit. It can not be even classified as rough . Total waste of time.

The director promised to explain his film in a Q&A that was supposed to follow the screening. We left early. Even the slow traffic in the streets seemed more interesting than what we had just witnessed. I can explain traffic. People are going from A to B. That's more interesting. Believe me.

Good Attempt Bad result
zekigiritli6 October 2019
I can understand what the director attempted to do with such a film but the end product is a disaster. Disturbing scenes throughout the film which were shot just for the sake of disturbing the audience without any artistic basis. There are scenes where you watch a tree for five minutes. Acting was awful as well. It was dead boring.

Disgusting Movie (sick)
mardun-115 April 2020
I have not seen more nastier movie for a long time. Disgust and spiritlessness in one. It must be a man probably really very "art" based to give this 10 stars. While I love the art thing, but this is neither art nor porn, it is kinky disgust one on a big screen.

The logic of the night
birthdaynoodle19 November 2019
'Liberté' is an arthouse film that's meant to provoke and perhaps even shock. It's about desire taken to the extreme, beyond the niceties of society and reason. It features a group of people of different social classes and ages, who surrender themselves in the darkness of the forest to pleasure and pain, concepts that become indistinguishable from one another. The story, if one may call it that, starts with naughty insinuations and escalates into an all out sadomasochistic extravaganza. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it doesn't deserve the low rating that it has received so far on IMDb.

Then again, Catalan director Albert Serra never meant to please the audience. He cheekily claims to have been upset by the warm reception of his previous film, the somewhat more accessible 'The Death of Louis XIV'. So he tried to redeem himself this time around by creating something less palatable. He complains that today, most films are made only to gratify the audience and that self-censorship keeps artists from saying anything that may be regarded as too dark, too ambiguous or too offensive for the collective. Fiction is supposed to "break taboos" and show "what's worst about human beings, as a form of catharsis. That's how Greek tragedy was born," he explains in an interview.

The title can be interpreted as ironic, as this absolute "liberty" that the protagonists engage in seems like madness and it isn't clear to what degree they actually enjoy it. Emotion here is expressed with animalistic grunts and sometimes agonizing screams. What I think is important is that it's all done consensually. All the participants voluntarily submit to this strange ritual and share an unspoken moral code. When one of the characters keeps asking for more whipping than he can physically take, the others deny it to him, as if they thought that he was being too greedy. The director believes that "in order to have a true communion between bodies" one must give up the sense of individuality and devote oneself to giving and not only receiving pleasure. What I found most interesting is that beyond a certain point, as the director puts it, "it ceases to matter whether the other person is tall or short, thin or corpulent, young or old, beautiful or ugly." Desire can level the field between "masters and servants, the rich and poor, the handsome and ugly, men and women..." At least in this picture, it seems to reduce human culture to very basic primitive needs, in a way that is egalitarian. There's something grotesque about the imagery in the film, yet at the same time, it looks like these libertines in the forest may be on to something.

"'Liberté'", Serra offers, "is a poem about the logic of the night, unproductive and sterile." Indeed, what is lacking in this deranged orgy is any hint of tenderness, of caring, or constructive contemplation. There is only desperate, burning desire and chaos. There is no trace of the Apollonian and the Dionysiac reigns supreme.

"Liberté" could be viewed as a celebration of artistic freedom. I'm thankful that we live in an era in which someone like Serra can dream up a beautiful nightmare like this, and that at least in some countries, we can view it in cinemas and later comment on it on IMDb.

Jeezo!
dfgrtgjfs4 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was intensely dull. A bunch of noblemen and peasants, (almost all ugly) women, (young and beautiful) spend a night dogging in the woods. I watched to the bitter end only because I'd partaken of a hash brownie and was hypnotised by the awfulness of it. Some interesting thoughts went through my head about the utter animalism of the kind of people portrayed. The only glimmer of humanity being the fact that it appeared to be consensual. There was an air of threat but nobody died except the duke, and I expect his was a merciful release. I hope I haven't spoiled it for anyone, it was the only event apart from the never ending shagging, whipping and wanking.

At least I can remove dogging from the list of things to do before I die.

Zombification of sex
aleXandrugota3 December 2021
Such a film is a whole philosophy, the director himself is totally atypical for the world of commercial film. Sure, it's hard to ignore the main theme of the movie, but that's the key. Many other "R" or 18+ movies are already on the market for just a few sex scenes, while Serra's film is about it from start to finish. It's a movie about eros zombification, nothing else.

Good for a bit of a chuckle despite some "unique" visuals
AJ_Nel24 April 2022
Albert Serra's "Liberte"(2019)is art for the sake of art. The film is meticulously paced and shot to create a "Peeping Tom" effect. The storyline is based on a play written by Serra and the film follows the format of a play. Immediately it is thus not everyone's cup of tea. The theme, which focus on high brow libertarians who who effectively ex-communicated by Louis XVI and who enjoys a night of debauchery also will not find favour with most audiences. That said Serra has a unique way of making light of famous works of the era, most notably those of the Marquis de Sade, and the film never feels heavy or for that matter pornographic (this despite some visuals which will not sit well with the Bible schools). The film is more about a bit of a chuckle than anything else and works rather well. 8/10.

One of the very best of 2019.
MovieMn198225 November 2020
If the Marquis de Sade and Georges Bataille ever got together, banged out a screenplay and co-directed a film, it'd probably look a lot like Albert Serra's LIBERTÉ. An atmospheric and disturbing journey into a night of debauchery with a gang of rim-jobbing, golden-showering, spank-happy libertines, who are apparently on a mission to be the filthiest group of bastards to ever don the powdered wig. One of the best of 2019, and one that I can't recommend to 99.7% of the people I know. Also, I'm going to need to repent and find some brain bleach, pronto.

This film is much much deeper if you get a chance
mikeyjwill12 February 2021
Definitely more than meets the eye here. It's yourself if you believe in past lives with your love experience. That's exactly what this would look like in the Louis XIV century. Definitely voyeuristic that's what it would have been like without today's world wide web and multi media. Just imagine yourself during this time. Would you have been at someone's mercy or in control? exhibit control or just be a third-party witnessing experiences rather than experiencing things directly? That's what this films really about France does the best job with erotic films in my opinion, in the entire world at this time.

You can't stay indiferent
zendomus18 October 2021
It is a disturbing movie, shows a non consensual narrative about sex, I have understood this is an interesting satira.

Took me a while to digest all the intrinsic ideas portrait.

Even the last scene is not void of meaning. However I leave you to see and look deep into this movie.
