This episode is an allusion to the movie "Rudy" which starred Sean Astin as Rudy. In this episode Earl is like Rudy and he is trying to get a job. This episode also stars many of the actors that were in Rudy including the janitor, the coach, some of the football team. It also has the same speech given to Rudy but in a different context and the same musical score.
The sales floor employees Rick and Brandon are played by real life siblings Sean and Mackenzie Astin.
At the end of the video Joy makes for Darnell, it cuts to a quick scene of a baby walking on a pond. This is from an episode of Yes, Dear (2000), where Greg and Jimmy make a video of Sammy walking, and get carried away. Incidentally, 'Mike O'Malley' and Billy Gardell, who feature occasionally as police officers, played security guards on "Yes, Dear", also created by 'Greg Garcia'.
The final scene where the "dockers" buy appliances spoofs Rudy (1993) - which guests Sean Astin, Chelcie Ross and Charles S. Dutton appeared in.
Earl and Randy obtain a job at Waadt Appliance. There is a real store called Waadt Appliance on Sherman Way at Balboa in Van Nuys, Ca.
