Megan "Monster" Hawkins, who gained notoriety after being featured on the show stated she was in fact not paid to be on the show and admitted that toliet talking is a real thing.
While the show was extremely popular amongst viewers it was met with great backlash by legal groups and rights advocates after lawyers and inmates alleged that producers and the corrections officers conducted gross miscarriages of justice and duty. Fights were allowed to take place for prolonged periods of time for the sake of filming, inmates were informed that they wouldn't get in trouble for rule violations that were caught on film and they let inmates incriminate themselves on film without a lawyer present and often in the presence of guards who were close by escorting the camera crew. The shows sequel "Jailbirds New Orleans" abruptly ended after the OCSO jail claimed that despite assurances that these practices would not take place at the New Orleans facility, they still did and to an even greater degree. OCSO kicked the crew out after a matter days claiming breach of contract and only 3 episodes would air. Due to the controversy's around filming it is unlikely there will ever be another season
