Humanity...
brooksphillip116 December 2020
I understand why many people have reviewed this film negatively. It's not for everyone. If it were meant to be for everyone, the producers would have dug up another comic book character and we'd have another steaming piece of Marvel to stare at for 2 hours. With great production value, I'm sure.

This is a slow burn. I like that. I want to care about the characters before I know (or I am left to determine) their fate. I want to see Jean's transformation-especially since she is simply Eddie's woman for the first part of the story. She starts off purposeless. Maybe a pretty face he didn't marry for her cooking.

Anyway, the plot moves soon enough and we are presented with a crime movie not dissimilar from most crime movies. Except for the transformation of Jean. And the humanity. The kindness of strangers along the way. The touch of a stranger at a laundromat. Some good people.

There are a couple of events in the film that cannot be overlooked. Maybe these events will cause some viewers to find one or two of the heroes irredeemable. (I'm being vague to avoid spoilers.) But at least it gives you something to think about as you watch it.

Also, I love the two Aretha songs (covers) in this film: Natural Woman and The Weight. (Sorry, I had to throw that in.)

If you like independent films, I think you'll like this one. Personally, I am glad I watched it and enjoyed seeing Jean's arc.

An atypical and interesting noir
horrorules22 December 2020
I saw this movie on Amazon Prime just the other night and it surprised me very positively, I think Julia Hart directed a very different 70's noir than usual, it starts as a family drama and then becomes a full-fledged thriller, with some even very intense and raw moments. The film takes its time, Hart expands the times, but despite this, the film is never boring and keeps interest alive. Special mention for the talented Rachel Brosnahan who offers a truly remarkable performance.

Enjoyed this gritty, low budget movie
m-walsh24 December 2020
I enjoyed it. Sure, there might be plot issues, if you over-analyze it, but I try to not do that. I enjoyed Rachel Brosnahan's acting, and the plot was not predictable. I also enjoyed how much of the action was off-screen, how viewers and the main character did not know what was going on, how the story was told from a minor character's POV, and the relationships that developed.

Anyone notice the Thief (1981) connection?
IbrahimKhider21 December 2020
I laughed when I saw Michael Mann thanked in the end credits. Aspects of the this film reminded me of Thief (1981), Michael Mann's first film starring James Caan and Tuesday Weld. I am guessing that Brosnahan's character continues where Tuesday left off in the film when she was sent off with a guard and a bag of money by Frank, who had a whole syndicate after him. Same situation, Frank met Jessie who could not have children and because the former had a criminal record, they could not adopt either. A child was delivered from a syndicate connection. Thus, a pretty hefty nod to an earlier film classic (and one of my all-time favorites). I think Frank would have been nicer and more competent than Eddie in this film. Same with Jessie and Jean, as in Jessie from Thief would be more competent than Jean, but maybe the former might not have the courage to use a gun, as jean does. Speaking of which, is 'I'm you're Woman' any good? Yeah, it's alright. Not great but not bad either. Sorta dark, not-so-feel-good trying to be a feel-good, but plot sort of T-bones all that. I was chuckling throughout, but I like dark humor. Not bad, it's okay. As for those who complain about the crying kid, eventually he does stop and the story picks up.

Another good movie with an ending that seemed flat...to me. Worth watching for sure.
ericfield-5354211 December 2020
I really liked this movie. The story and the acting were really good. Just as the action picks up that's when the movie ends. I don't need action in every movie I watch. I love a good story. There could be zero action in the film. This movie however does have a little action and suspense. I don't do spoilers so I'll say to give this movie a watch. Hopefully the ending works better for you. It definitely wasn't a terrible ending. I think because the acting and the characters were so good that you were left wanting more. Over a good movie and I'd recommend watching it.

Great premise that peters out
collegeforall9 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film begins with a man bringing a baby home to his wife and telling her not to worry about where it came from. Soon, she's awakened in the middle of the night by a man who tells her to get moving while packing thousands of dollars from her husband's closet into a bag. Something has gone wrong and Eddie is nowhere to be found. A captivating premise! As the movie progresses, it becomes clear that Eddie is not just a thief but a killer who has likely been killed by the men looking for the money, so his wife has to run, protected by a mysterious man. Again, a very interesting twist on the usual crime story. But then things bog down and become farfetched and just inexplicable instead of creating more tension and intrigue for the viewer. Most egregious is the last 20 minutes, which fail to account for anything or tie up any loose ends, instead opting for a self-conscious ending that tries too hard to be arty in a vague and unsatisfying way.

Good!
emilioollerenasm13 December 2020
With a phenomenal Rachel Brosnahan performance and a powerful story I'm Your Woman is a visually beautiful and emotionally thrilling movie with some amazing scenes. Great direction, very smart screenplay, beautiful aesthetic and great supporting roles. At times it feels like is going no where, especially in the middle where it feels kind of messy. But still, this is a a phenomenal experience that will keep you at the edge of your seat, and it really is one of a kind.

Good if you like babies crying
kookybaby121813 December 2020
Most of the movie is the lead and a crying baby. The rest falls flat. Good performances from everyone including the crying baby. A lot of time invested on a plot with no return.

Tense, opaque, frustrating, then suddenly violent. So: maybe a perfect mob movie.
shoobe01-130 December 2020
The experience of the movie is the experience of Jean (Rachel Brosnahan). That's on purpose, so if you can't handle a crying baby or not knowing what is happening, and only sloooowly figuring out what is going on: yup that's the point. It's annoying, harrowing, and helps explain some of the actions she takes in the movie.

The conceit is to look at what happens to some of the more peripheral characters in the typical mobster movie. When the wife is sent off with a trusted cohort, what happens? How unpleasant is it to not be in the know? To find you NEVER were in the know about anything, and slowly find out the truth of many things about your life.

Even those who rated it well, I will note, say that it's not got action etc. Wrong. It has Meaningful Action. You really, really start learning the stakes, and get paranoid about everything while watching. When there is a sudden burst of violence, it is both unexpectedly all the more frightening, and the probability of a violent outcome are very clear. Violence builds slowly, then happens suddenly. Like reality. People who hold others at gunpoint get shot by people not stupid enough to talk about it first.

Great movie, really makes me weep for civilization at all the low ratings.

A crying baby
cibolaleo13 December 2020
Take a slow movie, ad intermittent tension AND a crying baby! I'm NOT your WOMAN to watch this show! If the baby hadn't cried the entire time I could have maybe stood it.

loved it
bpwilmoth2 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Even though I have ADD, I never got bored or wondered how much time was left in the movie. I think the pacing was great and the moments of tension were incredibly artistically done. I loved Jean's evolution from "purposeless" (as another reviewer described her) to driven and I thought her character was just so well done! Her immediate connection with the baby was incredibly beautiful and real but the best part was that it wasn't Jean's only personality trait - she was her own person and not just a mother who loves her child (you can tell this was directed by a woman because of how beautifully illustrated this female-centered experience is). also the outfits were incredibly scrumptious... just had to put that out there. i could go on but just please watch it and don't stop halfway through because the baby cries like any actual baby would like come on bro turn your volume down a bit if it really bothers you that much but keep watching.

Meh
paulbattan14 December 2020
Love Rachel Brosnahan and couldn't wait to see this. I don't need lots of action to find a movie satisfying but this one was just too slow, ponderous, and unnecessarily long, for my taste, though it did pick up toward the end. Guess I will just stick to Mrs. Maisel for my Rachel Brosnahan fix.

The final act is well worth the wait !
Lewis_Heather78728 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Wasn't expecting much from this small, low budget thriller however I'm really glad I did give it a go because its' a little gem of a film.

This film is 2 hours long but be warned it is a slow burn, it felt much longer than 2 hours. For the first hour of the film us as audience are on the same rollercoaster ride as the main character Jean played by Rachel Brosnahan. It more or less builds just characters interactions without really explaining much of the plot or what is going on to be honest. It definitely makes you resonate with her struggle/story more because we are in the same boat, desperately wanting the find out more information. I can understand if this slow approach to the film putting people off but I fell it actually serves the story/film well as a whole because the final act is everything you want from a thriller.

That is the main positive of the film, the final act. Its pulsating, thrilling, mysterious, action packed and just enthralling to watch. To me the pay off at the end is well worth it getting through the more slow/dull first half of the film. Although there is a part of me that is slightly disappointed it was a happy ending...........well apart from the grandfather dying that was it, the rest of them survive.

Directing is good from start to finish, acting across the board and obviously in particular Rachel Brosnahan is really really good. Its a very gritty and believable world that is built within this film makes for all the better tension and drama. Stylish and does pack a punch when needed both visually and emotionally. 70% out of 100 its a good film, I'd definitely recommend it !! To score it any better maybe the pace in the first hour could have been done slightly better because there was a point it was starting to drag. Apart from that a solid good thriller !!!

Jean and Harry: A Love Story
lavatch22 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In "I'm Your Woman," the central relationship is that of Jean and her baby Harry, who are in a criminal-style witness protection program. The singular accomplishment of the filmmakers was to elicit natural reactions from the kid with an inordinate amount of screen time.

Certainly the relationship of Jean and Harry is unorthodox. Jean could not produce a baby herself. So, her husband Eddie, a criminal magnate and killer in the underworld, finds a way to "adopt" an unwanted baby. But as soon as Jen is settling in with her new baby, she is hustled out of the house, given $200,000, and forced to live on the run because her husband had murdered an overlord name Marvin.

The slow-paced film received a boost in the scenes between Cal and Jen. Cal was called in by Eddie to protect her. Obviously a caring father himself, Cal was attentive to baby Harry and skillfully moved Jen around to various "safe" houses, including his own family cabin. An interesting chemistry developed between CAl and Jean. Cal's wife Teri, as well as the wise grandfather Art, provided able and kind assistance as well.

The screenplay became overly complicated with the machinations of the crime world of which the audience learns only a smattering of details. The crucial character of Eddie drops out of the film early. And the past relationship of Eddie and Terry, which never clearly came into focus, made the film especially convoluted.

It was really up to actress Rachel Brosnahan to try to infuse mundane scenes of child-rearing with interest and suspense. On the set, Rachel must have had the patience of Job. Ultimately, despite the hard-working efforts of the actress, the film was sluggish and overly unpleasant.

Gave up half way
lmgeew13 December 2020
I tried very hard to be patient, hoping that it would get better, but gave up. This movie is like nails on a chalkboard. The acting is terrific but the script, plot, and art direction is so drawn out and repetitive! Two-thirds of the audio is the baby wailing which just gives the viewer a headache!

Unique mix of action and heart
nesdon-220 December 2020
I loved this film. Amazed to see so many bad reviews, likely due to a Michael Mann audience not knowing what to make of Kelly Reichardt stylings. Excellent period design, cinematography, and superb performance by Brosnahan, with a subtle script, heavy on interiority, that allows most of the action to enter without much explanation.

I loved the way it left so much of the chaos and violence off stage, and brought just enough in to validate the terror of the characters, and the way it managed to play on some strong ant-racist and feminist themes without ever commenting on them. If you're looking for Heat, walk on by, if you're patient and motherhood thrills you, you might love this as well.

stay at Evelyn
SnoopyStyle17 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Set in the 70's, Jean (Rachel Brosnahan) is married to a criminal. They can't have children and the marriage has gone stale. One day out of the blue, he comes home with a baby. Suddenly, she raising the baby as her own. Her husband goes missing and she has to go on the run with Cal whom she has never met before.

This is a fascinating little crime noir. Brosnahan is great. The movie reaches a high point with neighbor Evelyn. There is a great question about her motives. It could have spent more time at her house with the two thugs. The rest of the movie rambles on and the movie is way too long at two hours. That's not to say that it doesn't have some great scenes in the second half. It's just that it would work better to stay at Evelyn's for the climax. Instead, the movie becomes various killers randomly finding her and trying to kill her. It feels very random but Brosnahan delivers some great work. One thing, I expected that she would leave her friends at the hospital. Those are gnarly injuries and they can't just sleep it off. They are likely to die from them without treatment.

What exactly was this film about?
dannysoya16 July 2021
Left this one feeling much like Jean feels for the entire film; confused. What even was the point of all this? Unnecessarily slow and builds up to absolutely nothing. Complete waste of my time.

If you're looking for an action flick, skip the movie and then you won't rate it boring
tom-seattle13 December 2020
I'm astonished how many reviewers can't handle quiet suspense and subtle acting. This movie builds a personal and eventually gripping story by taking us into the experience of a 1970s wife and mother who has no idea what her husband does. So we follow her slow and scary realizations of his work, his enemies, and his violence, even though we only meet him at the start of the movie.

There's a whole inter-racial story here, too, topical for 2020, and worth seeing just for that story.

In watching Rachel Brosnahan, I was reminded of Ryan Gosling in Drive, and began to think there's a developing genre here, where quiet characters don't let us find out how they feel. what they do, and what they value, until the movie is over.

There's some wonderful acting in I'm Your Woman, personal storytelling and personal camerawork, and many great 1970s outfits. Slow down and check it out.

Slow burn woman centric crime drama
northernpaladin23 February 2021
Stop moaning about the baby crying and watch the bloody film!! This is absolutely a slow burner and you need to stick with it past the 40 minute mark to really get used to the pace but it is absolutely worth it. I didn't know any of the principal players but none of them put a foot wrong and the direction is assured. The basic plot is routine. Criminal husband kills the wrong guy, wife is forced on the run, bad guys in pursuit. But here the female lead is a slowly evolving character who at the end of the film is still on her journey. Throw in strong black co stars who are very much part of the drama and key to the unfolding of the story plus the distraction of a baby and Julia Hart gives us fine riffs on the American crime genre. A couple of revelation scenes look like they are missing something that was cut and the denouement is perhaps a bit of a stretch but these are minor quibbles that do not distract from a fine piece of work, well paced and well acted. If only there was more of this about.

Misleading title
CakeWalks2712 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When it comes to movies, the audience should believe the characters and understand the behavior and situations.

At first I thought this would be like "Quarry", the excellent one season show but No. Instead here's a movie that tried to be too many things at once, some scenes so awkwardly badly acted I felt embarrassed for them. There are a few potholes they try to explain in drawn out crying scenes which is so silly why bother.

And the unlikely fair maiden/damsel in distress who just learned how to shoot saves all the black people who happen to be great cooks and are somehow magical baby whisperers. Best thing about this movie was the music.
