In the near future, Britain's landfill sites, where it's mountains of rubbish are stored, are filling up and a new criminal syndicate called The Eco Mafia are rising, offering cheaper, more cost effective means of removing waste. When a man investigating illegal dumping is found murdered, two Scotland Yard detectives go on the trail of his killer, only to be sucked into a dangerous and uncertain new criminal underworld.
The If...series, which began in 2004 and hasn't had a new episode in quite a while, explored, in a dark, serious fashion, various bleak scenarios in a futuristic Britain. Here, the possibility of a Britain without a suitable place to store rubbish is explored. It's an interesting idea, as we are very much a consumer society and the cost of much of the none bio-degradable stuff we can't considerately dispose of will surely take it's toll, possibly very soon from now. But even with all this in mind, this certainly presents a dark vision of a pending future, with criminal heavies controlling front new waste firms and intimidating those who don't immediately go along with their plans.
But there are less brutish things to consider, as various people in the know come forward and give their opinions, from burning waste, and the unfortunate problems this would create in the shape of dioxins, harmful chemicals being released into the atmosphere, as well as the fact that England has no place to store extremely hazardous waste along with no system in place to regulate it,and re-usable waste being sent to developing countries like China.
Picking faults, the production values and probable stock footage do give away the low budget, but no one expected this to have a high budget. People who've lost the ability to think and consider things seriously may resent the bleak, serious tone but that's their problem. ****
