We must not rise up in anger or vengeance
Mrpalli772 October 2017
Three college black students are shot in a park near the Projects; the guys, shot in the head, died right after while the girl (Monique Gall), shot in the stomach, is severely wounded . They are top students and for sure with no gang affiliation. In the first 48 hours detectives didn't manage to find anything (just a ring traded in a pawn shop) but thanks to the girl awakening some hints lead them to three young Hispanic boys. They are not real criminal, but wanted to play like gangsters; the classic brats whose life wouldn't be easy once they're ending up in Rikers.

The father of the guys, a reverend, made a consuming speech soon after his sons' death. Falaccii put her life in danger by trying to catch the perp without waiting the proper backup.

Pushed toward retirement
bkoganbing22 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This episode of Criminal Intent is all about senseless urban violence and the sway that one charismatic, but sociopathic man has over followers. In fact at the crime scene one of the perpetrators involuntarily urinated at the scene giving the detectives some nice DNA evidence.

Chris Noth and Alicia Witt catch the case of two young black men and a young black woman who were shot, the boys just executed, the girl who survives to give valuable evidence for the apprehension.

One of the perpetrators is Jesse Garcia who felt like those kids simply disrespected him and that was provocation enough to kill. The other two were a pair of wannabe gang members and both Logan and Valachi do go down that route for a bit.

Garcia is terrifyingly evil, one of those people who are just plain born twisted and there's no redemption like Charles Manson. A great argument for capital punishment. He might make death penalty opponents pause and take note.

As Mike Logan moves farther and farther toward a retirement option which Chris Noth did in his last Criminal Intent episode, this case was one where he decided it was too much and pushed him toward that decision.

Scary people in this world.

A senseless loss
TheLittleSongbird28 April 2021
Was not expecting to like "Senseless" this much. Falacci, Wheeler's temporary replacement, didn't last long, and she was a character that generally didn't do much for me and the same goes for her chemistry with Logan on the whole. They didn't have many episodes together, and personally didn't care for most of them. Have always though liked Logan, the idea for the episode is harrowing and 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' was still capable of greatness when it became more variable.

"Senseless" for me was not just the best Logan and Falacci episode, being the only great one, it is also one of the best episodes of a very inconsistent Season 7 and one of the best "ripped from the headlines"-type episodes from the latter seasons. A big improvement over the disappointing previous episode "Untethered", despite it being a Goren episode too much of what makes 'Criminal Intent' so great at its best was not present in that episode. "Senseless" is the best episode of the season and show since "Smile" and is one of the season's most chilling and moving outings.

My only issue, and this is probably reading more of a nit-pick to some, was that to me the motive for such brutal killings and considering how truly chilling the responsible is was somewhat too trivial.

However, "Senseless" is highly successful everywhere else. Logan is dryly humorous, instinctive and hard-edged as ever. His chemistry with Falacci gels a lot better here, with some intelligent and entertaining exchanges. As for Falacci, this is the only episode where she wasn't a problem or when her negative traits weren't over the top (she is also very brave). It is also the only episode where Alicia Witt worked, found her too affected in her previous episodes but here she tones it down without going too far the other way. Chris Noth is terrific and one can see that Logan is starting again to go over the edge the more difficult the case becomes. The other acting standout is a terrifying Jesse Garcia, you only have to look at him and be immediately intimidated.

The episode does wonderfully not just with the chilling nature of the crime and facing the possibility of it being gang related but even more with the truly heart-breaking effects of grief and loss senselessness has on loved ones and even characters usually tough as nails like Logan are affected. Very powerful story indeed. Complete with a pull no punches and intelligent script, some of Logan's dialogue does hit hard where one sees and relates to how difficult he's finding reigning in anger and hate. The ending sends shivers down the spine.

It is well made, intimately photographed and slick with no signs of under-budget or anything. The music didn't sound melodramatic or too constant and the direction is accomodating while still having pulse.

Concluding, great. 9/10.

Best L & O of all time
SylviaToyStLouis5 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The opening segment of this episode is a perfect little movie, poignantly framing the subtext of the rest of the story and perfectly establishing the antagonists as sympathetic. The fall from grace - innocence and the love of a father - never fails to make me sad when I watch this episode. "Senseless" seems not just about a crime that appears on the surface not to have any meaning, but also about the inexplicability of human tragedy, loss and grief that can and does happen to people every day, and comes out of nowhere like the three young criminals appear from the shadows around the playground. Human tragedy so often is unexpected and never seems fair, as in this wonderful story.

One of The Worst Episodes In The Whole Series
Problemyst5 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is, quite simply, one of the worst episodes I have ever seen from Law & Order: Criminal Intent. It is almost as if you were watching an episode from some other dumb, *senseless*, bad TV show, eliciting strong feelings of fear from its audience mostly in order to get you stunned. Maybe they were testing new writers at that time, or changed director, or something else: I don't know. But the result is clearly not up to the high levels we were used to with L&O: CI. For there is no talk, no insight, no soul searching into the despaired, suffering mind of the man who perpetrated the crime this time; no one hears him, no one pays attention to what he has to say, and so, no one to get in touch with his humanity. He is just another bad guy...

This was a pretty disappointing episode for me.
