This USA Network crossover features Mary McCormack as her In Plain Sight (2008) character US Marshal Mary Shannon. That show aired its pilot two weeks prior to this one.
The joke about Mary Shannon needing to be back in Albuquerque by Sunday night at 10 is an in-joke referencing the eastern standard time that new episodes of In Plain Sight (2008) air on USA Network.
Halfway through the episode Logan refers to "the Sweet Smell of Success" and Burt Lancaster's role as a predatory gossip columnist. The victim T. K. Richmond is based (down to the younger sister, the typewriter, and the ugly eyeglasses) on Lancaster's character J. J. Hunsecker in the film Sweet Smell of Success (1957). It is not quite clear from the script whether Richmond is supposed to be trying to imitate Hunsecker or whether the writer, director, and costume/set folks are just having fun.
While Logan and Wheeler are interviewing the screenwriter (played by Maury Ginsberg), a poster of "Carolina Heat" can be seen in the background. This fictitious movie featured prominently in "Courtship" from the previous season of the season.
The doctor in Louisiana is named Dr. Benway, an inside joke. Dr. Benway is a character from the novels of William S. Burroughs, in particular 'Naked Lunch'.
