There are two species of vampire bats (primary source of nourishment is blood) indigenous to South America.
Kevin said that while he was living in the city of Carthage, Tunisia the bats would come out at dusk (long after the sun is set, complete darkness), and they blanket the sky, and not all bats eat mosquitoes, some hunt mammals, more specifically the blood of said animals.
Kevin said the fear of bats goes all the back to Greek mythology, bats lived in the underworld and their is a strong association with Hades (God of said underworld) and Persephone (also known as Kore, Greek Goddess of vegetation, especially grain) were involved. Moreover, in Rome, if you did not want to fall asleep, the head of a bat is cut off and placed near the left arm. Before Kevin was rudely interrupted by Lori and Robert, he was about to say in Mayan culture, the bats are associated with death.
