This was a nice bit of nostalgia as Dent looked back at the television shows broadcast by the BBC on Christmas week 1988.
Top of the roost was Eastenders. Although Leslie Grantham had left the show some months earlier. He had filmed weeks of self contained footage as Dirty Den in scenes set in prison. Those scenes were used throughout the rest of 1988 and early 1989 went he encountered a lethal bunch of flowers.
Inexplicably Bread went on to become one of the biggest sitcoms of the 1980s. Unlike say Only Fools and Horses, its reputation did not endure. My mum used to watch it religiously and compared all her sons to the Boswell kids on screen. It is safe to assume I came nowhere near being compared to Joey, that was my older brother.
The Boswells take a non festive trip to Rome. It was not very christmassy and a tad indulgent and dull.
Christmas Morning with Noel meant some poor saps had to turn up to work on Christmas Day as Noel Edmonds would make more and more daring shows. One year he had Feargal Sharkey singing live from a plane. Now he is talking to astronauts in the space station. Not exactly riveting.
With Ronnie Barker hanging up his comedy boots. Ronnie Corbett teamed up with Bruce Forsyth for a comedy spectacular.
The fact that it was shunted at 10.55 pm on Boxing Day was a clue that it was not very good.
Bros who found a new audience in their 2018 documentary about them, showed that being mocked was in their DNA. If only there were silent, instead they murdered Silent Night.
