A TV gem! A milestone in Spanish TV.
francisco-carrizo26 November 2020
Everyone in Spain (and many Latin American countries) knows who Cristina "La Veneno" (Poison) was, to a greater or lesser extent. Many will remember her for her famous intervention in the long-gone "DEC" hosted by Jaime Cantizano on Antena 3 and the iconic phone prank she was played there, in which a woman posing as her neighbor insulted her to piss her off. I certainly recall the times in which she faced Nova, another trans woman who criticized Cristina for not standing up for Trans rights. Others may remember her for her appearances on "Esta Noche Cruzamos el Mississippi" (Tonight we cross the Mississippi), Pepe Navarro's well-known program thanks to which she came out of her anonymity.

From her first appearance on television until her death in 2016 under strange circumstances, many things have been said and published about the life of Cristina Ortiz, but the truth is that they have never been told with such sensitivity and respect for her figure. Cristina worked as a streetwalker, one of the few outlets that hundreds of trans women in Spain were forced to go to in order to make a living.

Inspired by the book of her memoirs: "¡Digo! Ni puta ni Santa: Memorias de la Veneno" (I Say! Neither a whore nor a saint. The memoirs of La Veneno), "Veneno" is much more than an autobiographical show about the life of Spain's most famous trans woman. The mini-series, of 8 one-hour episodes, paints a faithful portrait of the chaustic, homophobic, and ultra catholic Spain of the late Francoism that mistreated and humiliated anyone who did not meet or fit certain standards. The series is a work of great maturity that mixes comedy, tragedy, and kindness in just the right doses to create a cocktail that, as a whole, is balanced and satisfactory.

One of the highlights of "Veneno" is in the successful cast of actresses who give life to Cristina throughout her life (from younger to older; Jedet, Daniela Santiago and Isabel Torres), as well as Paca la Piraña (played by herself), a mythical friend of Cristina's, who provides the comic relief of the series. Special mention should be made of the young Guille Márquez and Marcos Sotkovski who bring to life the Cristina of childhood when she was still known as Joselito; and of course Lola Rodríguez and Mariona Terés, two actors who grow up and shine even more with the course of each episode.

This new series by "The Two Javis" (Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo) is certainly the most original and groundbreaking work they have done to date, both in terms of script and production. The fact that a series like "Veneno" has managed to see the light (and even reach the big screen) is a milestone in the Spanish audiovisual scene. Because although it is true that we see more and more gays or lesbians or bisexuals in series and films, we finally find a series that features transgendered people as the main event. Equally or more important is the openness with which the series shows and raises awareness about this reality that is so important and so mistreated: transgender issues.

"Veneno" is an unprecedented revolution in the Spanish audiovisual industry. It gives us sex, violence, and insecurities without any concealment, with all the rawness with which it is sometimes associated, without leaving room for imagination. Probably, this series has also achieved more than any public awareness campaign promoted by many NGOs.

But the important thing is that "Veneno" exists and is necessary. You should see it, regardless of whether you like the character of La Veneno or not. Cristina Ortiz is just one more example of how much trans people suffer throughout their lives, of how difficult it is for them, physically and emotionally, and of the challenges they face every day. And so I would like to end by congratulating Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo for making this series that brings to light a reality that, unfortunately, many still see as taboo.

A Masterpiece created with love!

Veneno is a fabulous and inspiring, touching, excellent Masterpiece! Incidental music caresses the soul, photography that makes you travel wonderfully through the time, a phenomenal performance, a script, and a production that has taken care of even the smallest detail.

It makes you think: How many "Joselito's"(humans with deep hurts in the heart and soul)walking around this world? A masterpiece that Revealing scars left by a society with double moral that remains the same in the middle of 2020, some progress we made that only solves the surface of the reality.

Not only seeing the side of the LGBT+ community but of everything that DOES NOT LET YOU BE YOURSELF.

A masterpiece and a beautiful gift to La Veneno and all her fans. Also very important, you don't have to previously know who she is to be delighted by the story, just as I didn't. Hope it reaches the world.

Cinematic Television Perfection!
jtaveras6418 December 2020
This show is an undeniable masterpiece. From the music scores to the locations the acting, the script the actual story, the cinematography, the soundtrack and the performances it's an A + all the way! There is an incredible balance in the show with its humor, it's drama, it's sensibility, it's emotion, it's rawness and it's realness that makes it incredibly unique. I guarantee you will never see anything like it, in the end though what stands out about this incredible story it's its inspiration of the human spirit. Oh... Have some tissues ready because you will cry. Then laugh, then cry some more.

Beautiful show
airickoo3 December 2020
I'm a big fan of Spanish media and this show knocked it out of the park. The writers did a great job of honoring the life a of a truly important woman in LGBTQ history. Very creative storytelling, that at times was a little too campy (hence the 9 and not 10) but very entertaining. The series had so many moments that are just so human and any person can probably relate to. Christina had such a difficult life but she didn't see it that way, she thought it was beautiful and again the makers of this show did such a great job of capturing that.

Amazing

I watched this show based on the glowing reviews here. I was skeptical-especially since the first episode is a little slow at first-but WOW. By the end of the first hour I was completely hooked and stayed that way through the whole series. This is a fantastic show and I highly, highly recommend it.

Bravo! Best Mini Series from Spain
meclote6 April 2021
This is a very well done and acted series. This is a vindication of the trans cause through history, almost Dickensian, of a woman who was born in adversity -that is, trans in an Andalusian town of the sixties- and forges her identity on the margins of a society which he will end up seducing in a few years of splendor, before dying out in tragedy.

Absolute must see masterpiece

Absolutely everything you could ask for. It's funny, clever, sad, gorgeous, captivating and REAL. Absolutely everything about this is perfect. The actors, the directors, the sets, costumes. It feels so authentic that you get sucked into the scenes like your there with them. This deserves absolutely every award it's nominated for.

Sad and empowering at the same time

So glad they decided to make a show about 'La Veneno', she was such an important part to the Spanish lgtb+ community and she deserves to be thanked for.

Back in the day, most people thought she was just a crazy woman, with shows like this you can see all the dark places in her upbringing and how hard her life was since she was a child.

It's just a hit of reality of the lives of many lgtb+ people, especially in her time.

Innovative Story telling
luisponz4 September 2021
Although I found Cristina's story very interesting, the way it was told with flashbacks and flash forwards elevate La Veneno to an almost mythological level. The dialogues were a delight to hear in Spanish, the acting, the art direction, the editing; everything was so wonderfully crafted. It could have been more compact, episodes 6, 7, and 8 could have been only one, but nonetheless, it was a very enjoyable and eye-opening watch.

Poor production, poor audio, poor editing!
qui_j9 August 2021
This is a poorly produced series that just is so badly produced that it is unwatchable. The audio is poor (even for fluent Spanish speakers to hear and understand) as is the editing. The scenes jump all over the place with little time to provide the necessary context to make the story even remotely comprehensible. Maybe it works in Spain but would have a difficult time making it elsewhere!

Being a gay man I have always been curious and fascinated about the what makes the Trans community tick but the horrible way so many are treated even killed. Since Pose ended I haven't felt so much love for a show that goes deeply into the struggles, the dreams, the eagerness to be accepted by the world as your true self. This show is not just for all the LGBTQ+ community but for everyone. The cast is exquisite, the script and direction even the soundtrack. I am hoping that there will be in 2022 a sequel. Believe it or not I found out about this series from 2 teenagers who posted one scene on Tik Tok. Thank you guys or girls.

SIMPLY BRILLIANT
mxashherman11 February 2021
I could say so many things about Veneno. First and foremost, it's an incredibly raw and emotional story. I'm not the type to cry during shows/movies (unless it's a very beautiful and tragic queer love story) but Veneno hit me hard. I cried my eyes out at the ending of the first!! episode and almost cried on, like, ten other occasions. As a transmaculine non-binary person, the themes of gender identity are very personal to me (even if the transfeminine journey is very different), but I don't think you have to be trans or queer to enjoy this series. Every aspect of the show is incredibly well-done. It's both entertaining and touching. It will make you laugh AND cry. The characters are bright, realistic and very human. Can I just say it is SO nice to see a high-production show (other than FX's Pose, which is also great) that focuses on trans women and has an all-trans cast? Trans women constantly being played by men only contributes to the harmful thinking of trans women being 'men in disguise', further endangering a group that is already struggling. Veneo proved that having a an all-trans cast (playing women of different ages in different stages of transition) is very much possible. I really wish more film/show makers would give a chance to these beautiful and talented women to accurately portray the trans experience. But this show isn't just about being trans. It also gives us an insight into the human condition and what fame (and the loss of it) does to a person. I had honestly never heard about Cristina 'La Veneno' before watching this show, but I think it really does justice to her bigger-than-life persona. I am sincerely thankful to the creators of the show for telling this incredible story. So, if you're not watching Veneno, what the hell are you even doing?!?

A defiant and overwhelming chronicle of heartbreak
danybur11 July 2021
Summary

The series is an atypical, overwhelming and moving biopic of the trans woman Cristina Ortiz, a famous Spanish media character who emerged in the 90s, with a prodigious staging that crosses all genres and that links different time lines with great originality. It is also a chronicle of the gestation of the book on which she is based, of the coming of age of her author and of her relationship with her biography.

In an age where Spanish fictions strive to become products as international as they are impersonal, the series' narrative power and profoundly Andalusian grace are appreciated, inseparable from its protagonist, a Veneno always treated with respect and infinite love that viewers they will make theirs.

Review:

On the occasion of the recent death of Raffaella Carrá and browsing her videos on YouTube, I came across this film shot in Argentina in 1980, in the midst of the military dictatorship, when she was already a real success.

Carrá plays Barbara, an Italian superstar who comes to sing in a theater in Buenos Aires. At a press conference she meets a photographer, Mauro (Jorge Martínez). Soon we will see that Mauro is chased by an enigmatic trio of characters, while he is developing a romance with the diva.

It was tempting to see a movie filmed and shown during the dictatorship and try to perceive the period climate and detect challenges and meta messages queer and political. On the one hand, Bárbara is a romantic comedy where Carrá's character is a determined, independent woman who even takes up arms, playing an interesting role reversal with her heartthrob. On the other hand, why and by whom is Mauro persecuted, so that he must permanently escape or hide? Who is Mauro?

As a comedy in general and as a physical comedy, Gino Landi's film is quite elementary and the daughter of its time. With its limitations, it works best as a romantic comedy drama, with good chemistry between Carrá and Martínez. It also brings us action thriller sequences that refer us to another icon, Mrs. Peel. A curiosity is to see the playwright Rubén Szuchmacher as one of the enigmatic persecutors of Mauro.

As for the musical numbers, there are questions and challenges: to whom does Bárbara sing the enigmatic and melancholic song of the beginning in front of the Rio de la Plata? The opening number sung in English with her dancers wearing tiny and tight pants could perfectly be a video of Madonna (before Madonna) and is quite scandalous for Argentina at the time. She also has the audacity to sing the song Pedro P, where she says:

I walked alone through the streets, Taking photos of the monuments, The typical foreigner with a strange air, That runs through the entire city.

Suddenly and around a corner, A little boy calls me softly, With an innocent face and a formal air, He offers himself as a guide for the city.

Pedro, Pedro, Pedro, Pedro, Pe!

The best in all of Santa Fe, Pedro, Pedro, Pedro, Pedro, Pe!

I will prove it to you.

Referring to Santa Fe Avenue, the hottest street spot for gay flirting and hooking up and the taxi-boys of Buenos Aires, a song that became one of the anthems of the Argentine LGTBIQ+ community. Most of the songs appear in fairly naive, yet modern, montage clips that make for a real city-wide sightseeing tour.

Carrá is a fairly serious character, a lover of freedom and willing to commit without asking too many questions.

Perhaps this review forces the readings a bit, but beyond them and a protagonist who ends up reaffirming her coherence in the outcome, the film is an undeniable enjoyment through the reunion with the legendary Raffaella Carrá, bringing some oxygen to the inhabitants from these troubled lands back then.

Poisonous Perfection
matiasnav29 December 2020
"Los Javis" have created and developed an incredible series. The pacing of the story in every chapter works perfectly. The character development is outstanding and the way the actors and actresses portray the different roles is also amazing. The show is compelling, striking and forceful. Every single episode is emotional and thoughtful.

"Veneno" will be without a doubt one of the best things of this horrible 2020. Script, production, staging and acting are wonderful. The show gives voice to the ones who were oppressed and hidden by society for a long period of time...Fortunately things have started to change. Do yourselves a favour and give a taste of this "poison", you won't regret it. Thanks "Javis" for this amazing show.

Spanish style through and through
choko-0375123 January 2021
This is a heartbreaking story, but still so warm and so human. It will be a great support for all transgender people, seeking someone to identify with, but at same time, for everyone else, an amazing insight to a world of misunderstood, all-time judged and for no good reason hated people. A great piece of famous Spanish cinematography.
