The penultimate half-hour of Californication's first season is the one with all the twists that set things in motion for a sure-to-be glorious finale: a juicy appetizer before the real deal.

Big shock number one: Becca announces she will live with Hank. This is devastating news for Karen, who nevertheless keeps organizing her imminent wedding (which is why Becca is doing this in the first place). Hank, on the other hand, is thrilled to hear about it, but there's a less uplifting surprise waiting around the corner, namely big shock number two: Dani and Charlie are representing Mia, who is passing off Hank's latest book (of which she made a copy) as her own. Thankfully, it takes Charlie only a few pages to realize what's going on, but neither he nor Hank can do anything, because if they try to stop Mia she will tell everyone about her one-night stand with Hank.

And yet, in spite of all the dark implications, this is a very light episode, all thanks to Duchovny and Handler going through every scene with shameless, corrosive wit. If Robert Patrick, who played Agent Doggett on The X-Files, showed up as well, the three would be able to carry an entire season just by sharing the screen. A class act indeed.
