Brown and Stokes investigate the death of a young man found hanging from a tree. They believe this to be a hate crime as the man had breasts and is believed to be a pre-operative transsexual. As the investigation continues however, they learn he worked at a local water treatment plant and may have been up to something else entirely. Sidle and Lake investigate when a skeleton is found at the construction site for a new hotel. The site was once the Rampart Hotel owned by Catherine Willows' father. Her mother provides valuable information on the case. Grissom and Sidle decide on their future.

When the detectives are reviewing the gun sale record, the screen says that the gun is a Ruger model SP101 revolver and that it is a "38 Special JHP" caliber firearm. JHP (jacketed hollow point) refers to a bullet design, not to a caliber. Also, while the SP101 is offered in .38 Special, it is established earlier in the episode that the ammunition used for the murder is .357 Magnum, which cannot be fired from a handgun chambered in .38 Special.
