Sejong the Great, the fourth King of the Joseon dynasty, is widely considered as one of the greatest rulers of ancient Korea. A large part of the credit for that goes to the many scientific advances the kingdom saw during his reign and his introduction of the Hangul alphabet. 2019 saw two depictions of the emperor on-screen, the first being Song Kang-ho's version in “The King's Letters”, which specifically is about the latter achievement. The other was in “Forbidden Dream” by melodrama supremo Hur Jin-ho, returning to the historical genre after “The Last Princess”. Using both the scientific advances and the creation of the alphabet as a backdrop, it tells of Sejong's great friendship with Jang Yeong-sil, an inventor and astronomer who Sejong had a lot of affinity for.

Lavishly produced and epic in its romanticized picture of King Sejong the Great (1397-1450) and his reform of the Korean alphabet, “The King’s Letters” is the kind of film that gets easily funded anywhere when it praises the history and culture of its country of origin, by cementing the cult of a certain historic figure.
King Sejong is played by Song Kang-ho, who (finally) became a trademark name (internationally) after his performance of the troublemaker family’s father in Bong Joon-ho‘s “Parasite”. In “The King’s Letters”, he is given the ungrateful task of slipping into the skin of a clumsily developed titular character who lacks charisma and the very much needed je ne sais quoi. Song is performing a role of a monarch who dedicated his life to a thorough language reform in order to eliminate illiteracy in his country, but at the same time he is indecisive and soft,...

Two of South Korea’s most beloved actors, Song Kang-ho and Lee Byung-hun, are set to team up for the fourth time for “The King” director Han Jae-rim’s latest film titled “Emergency Declaration” (literal translated title).
The film is billed as a disaster drama set in a plane and will boast of a suspenseful plot and colorful characters. The title comes from the aviation term that describes the action of declaring an emergency to perform an unconditional landing when faced with a disaster and normal operation is no longer an option due to the captain’s judgement.
This will also be the third time Han Jae-rim and Song Kang-ho collaborate, having previously worked together on “The Show must Go On” and “The Face Reader”. Both Song Kang-ho and Lee Byung-hun have previously worked together on Park Chan-wook’s “Jsa: Joint Security Area” and Kim Jee-woon’s “The Good, The Bad,...
