Ella Fitzgerald receives tribute in this Great Performances show
tavm1 August 2007
Natalie Cole and Quincy Jones hosted this tribute to one of the greatest singers ever. Ms. Cole started off by singing one of Ms. Fitzgerald's first hits, "A Tisket, A Tasket". Then Wynonna sang "Ain't Misbehavin'". Stevie Wonder sang "Too Close for Comfort". Patti Austin with Take 6 sang "How High the Moon". Take 6 returned with "Just in Time." Nancy Wilson sang "Someone to Watch Over Me." And others came on like Ruben Studdard and a few other singers and instrumental players that I can't remember. Also, they showed a few clips of Ella singing with such musicians like Duke Ellington and Count Basie. And a recording of hers from 1975 called "Cry Me a River" was heard for the first time with a live band on air playing over her vocals. All in all, a great showcase for showing how influential Ms. Ella Fitzgerald was to many of the musicians that showed up for this very entertaining episode of Great Performances. Highly recommended for jazz fans and those of the lady being celebrated in this show.
