Capsule Review: Kettiyollaanu Ente Maalakha (7 Stars)
nairtejas2 December 2019
I was so enchanted to see Asif Ali enact the role of Sleevachan, a good-natured 35-year-old man with zero knowledge on how to deal with matters of sex and marital life, with such diligence and changing gradation that it was difficult for me to praise the importance, timeliness, and social relevance of this romantic drama. But I will make an attempt because Nissam Basheer would want me to as he has concocted a delicious recipe out of a sensitive topic. Marital rape and the indifference surrounding it in the state of Kerala and elsewhere in India has been handled with such deft in Kettiyollaanu Ente Maalakha (English: My Wife is My Angel) that it needs to be seen by everyone who is affected by it. Which is every human being, slightly limited only by their age. When Sleevachan is forced to marry someone not as a partner for himself but as someone who would take care of his old mother, he does not even look at his prospective wife when he goes to meet her and her family. The indifferent self-centered nature of this man is admired by that person (Veena Nandhakumar) who later becomes his wife, and so starts a conversationless tale of marital discord unknown to the people outside of the four walls of their yet-adorned bedroom. The anxiety and discomfort displayed by Ali and the voiceless concern shown by Nandhakumar (who might still need some acting classes) both enrapture you as you become a part of this Christian family where sisters-in-law have a say at everything and brothers-in-law are silent spectators and only care about the food. Everyone is nonchalant about what's going on and that's the way it is because sex is still taboo in India and no one talks about or teaches one about the things that one should do with their partner after marriage. Never breaking the obscenity line and only adding humour to the mix, writer Aji Peter Thankam only improves his social drama by making it more important as the plot goes deeper into the lives of Sleevachan and his pretty wife. There is so much to process in Kettiyallaanu Ente Maalakha, I would like to recommend it twice. Once with your partner and the second time with your whole family. It's totally worth it. TN.

Marriage Vs Love
shyammukundan24 November 2019
"Kettiyolaanu ente Maalakha" Malayalam movie.

High range village with its innocent villagers, form this presentation. Sleeva, the middle aged bachelor, doing the daily farm work.. have his daily dose of alcohol in the evening... to lead his contented life. His family pressure forced him to get married. Sleevachan's misguided ideas about sex, his in-experience in the carnal knowledge..all leading to a marital-rape.... later family disharmony...is the one line story.

This kinda highly tensed bridegroom seeking help and doing blunders....all remind us of Dineshan of "Thalayina Mandram". Script touches on socially relevant issue of necessity, of premarital counseling and sexual education.

Asif Ali as Sleevachan did well. Other characters also were good on screen.

7 on 10 for this, no twist, clean entertainer.

Careful planning could have made, this 'message' filled presentation, more indulging.

' To love and then marry... Or Marry, then love ' is the subtle question posed to the audience.

Ask yourself... !

Positive treatment to a fresh and sensitive subject
cinish24 December 2019
Asif Ali's best performance ever.

Perfect casting of Veena Nandhakumar as the heroine.

Characterization of Sleevachan has been amazing and there are a few beautiful nuanced emotional scenes set squarely within his character sketch.

The initial portions of the movie seem to have taken quite some inspiration from the detailing aspect of Dileesh Pothen movies. The visual presentation of the early morning routine of the rubber farmer was impressive in it's detailing/novelty.

The soul of the movie is very positive and uplifting. You will leave the theatre feeling good.

Characterization of the sisters, mothers, uncles etc have all been convincing. In general, the vibe across these characters is positive, making for a pleasant viewership.

Listin Stephen continues on his knack for producing successful movies. Subject choice is indeed very interesting, and the movie has been able to deliver on the challenge.

Background score has aligned well with the movie.

A subtle treatment of a sensitive topic
email-sunils26 January 2020
Yet again Malayalam movie makers have excelled in making a light and humorous movie on a sensitive issue with such a brilliance. Untill the first half, it's not even clear where the movie is heading. However the second half and esp the last 30 minutes were a real surprise and beautifully crafted.

A lot of the supporting cast are fresh faces and they add a pinch of reality to the whole setting. Movie revoles around the backdrop of a "high range" farmer and his social circle. Asif Ali's chemistry with his mother and sisters is charming. The director has upholded the tradition of ' attention to detail ' like many of the Malayalam movie makers. First 10-15 minutes will take everyone through the life of a rubber farmer in Kerala in a very realistic way.

Rincy, Slevan's (Asif Ali) wife goes through an life changing experience and the actress has done a brilliant job showcasing the same. Special mention to Basil Joseph who plays the role of Slevan's Employee and a close aide. I personally love the way he has been chosing roles and delivering the with such brilliance. He himself being a director has chosen small but powerful characters recently.

Overall a light hearted yet a striking movie.

FAMILY MOVIE ONE OF THE BEST
muhammedalinaaz12 December 2019
Started with a small story title, the movie has ended up with a good message along with the thrills, as well as aspects of married life. All the characters were "living" in the same including asifka, veena and the "mother of sleevachan". one of the best big movie comparing the theme.

One of those special films in Indian Cinema that delves into a sensitive topic on Marital Sex.
surajpnair19 January 2020
Set in a backdrop of Kerala where the rubber plantation is the primary occupation of many lives and the film presents a rarest of rare characters Sleevachan, a farmer, who gets into a grave problem immediately after his marriage, a problem arising out of fear, peer pressure, trauma that runs through his mind when it comes to first sexual encounter with a woman, in this case, it's his wife.

The rarest of the rare adjective to the character is very much evident from the way Sleevachan leads his life, he considers his mother & sisters as his best pals. The character is aloof of what is happening around, rather he is focused more on his occupation and socializing with folks from his town. It would be surprising for many to accept this character in this age of digital world where information of any kind is readily available on one's fingertips, but the filmmaker convinces me that such characters still exist and that too very comfortably.

The conflict is so well placed in today's context, where most of the Indian families still consider discussing Sex as taboo and playing with such conflicts is a dangerous path the filmmaker had to tread on. The chances are that such attempts tend to shift towards titillation, thankfully the filmmaker treats this topic with sheer maturity. Technically as well, the film comes out well, brilliantly exploited the landscapes in the narrative, use of live sound aptly, minimal use of background score was another highlight.

Performance-wise, this is the best ever performance by Asif Ali who played Sleevachan. He played to the skin of the character, even the slightest detailing of the confused/vulnerable state of the character was conveyed effectively. The climax scene from Asif Ali moved me, he just nailed it. There are times when I expected this character to act responsibly even after the calamity in his married life, rather we see a restrained version of the character played so effectively that I started emphasizing with this character. It's like we, as an audience are way ahead than this character in this film laughing/mocking/deriding at the character's stupidity or plight, still we wait patiently for the character to resolve the conflict in hand. The wait was satisfactory, solely due to Asif Ali.

Veena Nandakumar, playing the wife of Sleevachan, starts off decently. The supporting cast, the extras, everyone has given a realistic performance, it just adds more power to this wonderful film. The humor is treated subtle, the emotional scenes hit the right chord, the subplots are well thought of and overall it makes more sense to the plight of the protagonist.

In a nutshell, this is a film I like to watch and recommend to all film lovers, this brings back nostalgic elements of the good old Golden Era of Malayalam Cinema wherein path-breaking storyline are conveyed in a simple realistic narrative. This film retains my faith in Malayalam Cinema yet again, awaiting many more of these to arrive.

This film is available on Amazon Prime, please do watch it and share with your loved ones. Highly Recommended!

Asif Ali delivers his career-best performance in a soulful, tender movie about a social evil widely prevalent in India
nidhunmoviebuff2 January 2020
Asif Ali delivers his career's best performance in a soulful, tender movie that depicts a social evil that is widely prevalant but seldolm discussed or even acknowledged in Kerala society. Debutant director Nisam Basheer excels with his natural storytelling, helped by a tight and efficient script where not a single piece of dialogue seems forced or wasteful.

Writer Aji Peter Thankam deserves plaudits for the incredible climax sequence and falso or infusing the narrative with dollops of natural humour in seemingly the most serious of situations. Watch the movie for the incredible Asif Ali, who has lived the character of everyman Sleevachan and another impressive debutante-Veena Nandhakumar who essayed the role of his wife Raicy.

Another must watch. Malayalam cinema keeps churning out incredible films covering fresh subjects in the latter half of 2019! The future in indeed promising

Excellent!

"KEM" is a well crafted excellent movie with a brilliant plot which is not much 'discussed.' Though a debutante, the heroine Veena Nandhakumar has given an exceptional performance along with the experienced Asif Ali. The director deserves all the applause for making a beautiful movie based on a weird topic and still able to present it enjoyable to all kind of viewers. Outstanding!

A decent family movie with a very relevant topic.
Azanspy20 January 2020
I couldn't watch KEM in theatres. I watched it recently with high expectations as there were rave reviews from both critics and audiences. The movie didn't fulfill my expectations but it was pretty good movie with very good performances. Asif Ali proved that he is one of the best young actors in Mollywood. Veena Nandhakumar also did a good job in her debut. Sex Education is not a topic that Mollywood has tried often and Nisam Basheer took this topic in the backdrop of a family movie well. Overall, KEM is a good movie and a watchable one for Asif Ali's performance and fresh social topic.

Hated it
malavikachandramouli14 December 2019
I was really uncomfortable throughout this movie, the thought that a man was so unaware about sex that he felt it was appropriate to have sex with his sleeping wife does not sit with me well. Soon after the rape the romanticize him for handling the situation rather grossly. The movie may have come from a good place, nevertheless when talking about sensitive issues like marital rape the approach should be nothing short of perfect.

That Magic!
harelives19 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Thank you Nissam Basheer and Aji Peter Thankam for this magical movie which is like a beautiful painting. Loved every minute of it. The touching heartwarming and tear seeping story has a tragedy of it's own which could be a true issue in a lot of marital lives. Who knows? Those are hidden stories. Luckily, Sleeva and Rincy managed to solve this out.

I don't know about what people say as this is Asif's best performance so far. I've seen him doing great work and this is actually one of the best characters he ever had. He has nails it perfectly and truly naturally.

Loving Malayalam cinema for their jewels like this!

Flawed Direction ruined a good movie
Leven_the_critic18 January 2020
I should really stress out about the direction of this movie which had a good chance of getting the recognition the story deserved. Camera work and director both failed miserably while making this movie. The concept of Marital rape was taken into a platter and force feeded to the viewers like we should appreciate the efforts the director fool made. It's not natural, if only the content was modified to make it easier and realistic it would be saved. Acting was not bad, if anyone else who knew how to make a movie they would Make a Whole lot difference, the choice of using less background scores is weird as the imbecile director thought he was making it for a Oscar movie score. The flaws are just everywhere. Some movies are like this, directing it to the abortion of the concept is nearly saved by good actors secenary and sets by the art department. Two songs was not the worst, one song was irrelevant. Overall I didn't like it. One time watch.

Struggle a lot of men go through at the start of their marriage.
kiranvs8719 May 2021
Lot of people get confused about this movie. It's not about marital rape. This movie is about long ignored subject of how lot of men (also women) struggle during initial days of marriage.

Even today, we raise kids with a taboo of talking to other gender kids is not right kind of environment.

This movie portray how shy and uncomfortable they will be even with their own spouse when they marry. They even struggle to make eye contact or make a meaningful conversation with their spouse because of how they were raised.

It's high time to let kids be kids. Let them mingle and make friendship with all irrespective of gender.

Bold movie with novel subject - (7.0)
sujith789_reviews1 May 2020
  • Watched the movie in Amazon Prime.
  • Concept of the movie is sex education, which haven't been discussed much in Malayalam movies.
  • The film makers should be appreciated for taking a bold and novel subject.
  • Asif Ali excels as a common man, Veena Nandhakumar was good in her debut and the character who played Asif Ali's mother was excellent.
  • Presentation is good.
  • One negative I felt is the story could be little more tighter.
  • Final Verdict: A good movie with a novel subject.

Asif is the Star here!
rajnnair24 October 2022
The story line is simple. Sleeva gets married so that there is someone who can take care of his old mother. The film addresses sensitive topics like marital rape, misguided notions about sex, importance of consent all of which is prevalent but not discussed much. The movie handles all these sensitivey which makes it a must watch for everyone.

Asif Ali is the star here and the last scene where he opens his heart is One of the best emotional scenes i have seen for a long time. You will feel for him and cry along.

He is supported well by the supporting cast of mother, sister, wife, co- workers etc.

The cinematography is excellent capturing the greenery and the scenic beauty.

Good debut film
bibingraj15 April 2020
Excellent direction. I feel like Nisham Basheer is a director to look forward to. With the screenplay he had, he has done justice to the film and directed wonderfully. The village setup, characters family relations, wedding etc was portrayed well. Acting was stellar by the 2 leads. Kudos to both of them. Good choice of a relevant issue. But here's many might have issue with screenplay. How realistic is the ignorance of the protagonist regarding sex, how innocent is it, the turnaround of Asif Ali's character to being empathetic, was the wife's response appropriate enough, these are all the questions that is debatable and many could have issue with and requires genuine scrutiny and analysis. But with the screenplay as such and if you can accept it, the film is good. I feel Malayalam has got another gem of a director. Hope he makes more good films.
