Nice adventure with an unbelievable mystery
talking_about_movies19 April 2022
I don't think anyone can predict this story. It might seem that it's going in a certain direction but just wait and watch. This is top-notch writing with a story that connects every single plot point it establishes. Nothing here is senseless. Everything is part of the puzzle. The characters can be a bit cringey at times but the mystery and adventure keeps it going.

Not really into anime, but love sci-fi. This turned out GREAT!
tywoolworth8 June 2021
*NO SPOILERS* I struggled a bit with episodes 1-3, as the mystery was not addressed yet (only subtly), but the real science-fiction element kept me interested. There were too many sub-plots which did not add up to the sci-fi overtones of the premise. BUT I WAS WRONG - each of the elements were answered, and in a logical way.

Overall, I was impressed with the writing. It DID deliver on the premise, and it kept the pacing, mystery, and character development. Great job crew!

I would RECCOMEND this mini-series. It was wrapped up nicely. Do not expect a second season, this was a complete telling of the story, and it was done well.

Perfectly awesome sci-fi anime!
Reckno6429 September 2019
While it feels a bit rushed at times, this is a pretty great anime. The character development is pretty good too. The main cast starts off as fairly cliche anime tropes but as they develop you begin to connect with them more and more. And boy does it get HEAVY near the end as everything is explained to us.

Overall, I kinda wish this anime had more episodes as it would give me more air to breath as it REALLY dumps everything on you all at once it seems. But I strongly recommend it nonetheless if you like sci-fi. Has some great themes of friendship and love too!

Objectively an 8.5/10 but I love it, so it gets a 10 from me. :)

Very touched

Warning: Spoilers
It was very touched to see the struggle of Aries and friends. They reveal the big secret that has been hidden by the world for 100 years. I think it's like an anime version of Interstellar.

An Unknown Masterpiece
beavsoccer17 November 2019
I love shows about outer space (that's what got me intrigued to check this one out). Simply put this show is probably one of my favorite animes right now and it's a total shame that (as of writing this) it only has 6 reviews.

To summarize without any spoilers - a group of high school kids take a field trip to another planet and end up getting lost in space.

That is a very, very simplified version of this show. As you get deeper into it there are many complex elements that arrive leading to questions that vary from political to semi philosophical. There is hardly any violence in this show, but the adventure itself is a wonder to watch and the character building is among some of the best I've seen for only having 12 episodes.

This was such a refreshing show in the sci-fi genre that I want to buy the manga just to have it (and I don't own any manga!)

Just watch this show and enjoy the adventure.

A splendid experience.
Achyut_Prashast_Singh27 November 2020
This is the first time I am reviewing an anime I've watched while simultaneously reading the manga. That's also why I can tell you it's both a faithful adaptation and a wonderful, enjoyable piece. Astra Lost in Space, as the title suggests, is a space-based anime and has got a lot going for it: great character development, stunning action sequences, inspiring heroic moments and of course, a heartfelt story of true friendship and teamwork.

One thing the anime does better than the manga is its simplification of the exposition. In the manga, I found myself re-reading a lot of dialogue to understand what was said, but this wasn't the case with the anime where I could easily understand the (subtitled) dialogue and the intention behind most of it. It also removes a lot of heavy explanations found in the manga, creating some differences with the source material, but they're minimal and at times, better in comparison. Plus, the changing aspect ratio almost gives the feel of an IMAX presentation; it's not something unnecessary and just fits with the overall tone and setting of the show.

The animation is strikingly gorgeous; designs for all the characters are lively and impressive. However, it's the depth of those characters that makes them worth liking even more. Every character is given time to be special at some point, hence the length is properly justified. One might actually argue, however, that the final episode feels a lot longer than necessary (it indeed is), but since the whole material has been adapted and we're possibly not getting another season due to that, I guess the length is not an issue. And of course, the soundtrack: one of the most memorable things about the show! Do not, I repeat, do NOT skip the intro song: it's one of the most exciting things you'll ever get to hear.

There are many characters, many backstories and many action-packed as well as emotionally charged and hilarious moments. The writing is so strong that it keeps you intrigued to move on to the next episode without much delay. So, if you like sci-fi action with a lot of memorable characters and a good mystery element, just go and watch it. And yeah, do read the manga as well. I can assure you it's fun checking out both.

Solid Anime with some fresh ideas but also some classic mistakes.
dameon_green14 May 2020
Overall the core plot and many of the sub-story twists are a breath of fresh air among a glut of "Copy and Paste" anime's, but it does have its faults.

Pro's:
  • Fairly unique plot with reasonably good execution.
  • "Challenge of the week" handled in a fairly intelligent manor.
  • Good overall background tension, smiling faces sometimes hide pain.
  • Not always sunshine and happiness, there is some strife and distrust amping up the group dynamic.
  • Above average character growth, with time spent on each giving them a personality beyond the cardboard background stand in's most shows have.
  • Individualized hurdles for each character.
  • Self inclosed story arc with the possibility for more.

Cons:
  • Start is a bit rocky, and it needs a few episodes to get it's feet.
  • The challenges they face are sometimes overcome in comically easy ways, detracting from the overall struggle.
-Some of the "reveals" had either too much foreshadowing or were too predictable.
  • At Times a little to "happy" or the group dynamic is a bit more positive than I'd expect.
  • Ending felt rushed, really could have used some more time, but isn't this always the case?

This is how you START and FINISH a series!!
kzjd-938-51356610 June 2021
I wish way more anime would have a nice and wrapped up ending like this show did! The pacing and story telling were just phenomenal. It didn't feel rushed, nor did it feel like there was a bunch of filler, and of course my favorite part of the plot is they actually wrapped everything up in the 12 episodes. I hate when animes leave so much on the table, thinking they'll get to do another season and then that day never comes. I was not expecting this show to be this damn good, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Reasonably good SciFi for tweens
glumski29 September 2023
'Kanata no Astra' tells the story of a group of high school students who find themselves stranded in space, desperately trying to get back home. Along their travels onboard the derelict spaceship Astra, they need to overcome various challenges, becoming a closely-knit group of friends in the process.

Honestly, I'm a bit on the fence with regards to the show. For an adult audience it oftentimes is far too simplistic and childish, but for young teenagers, it likely hits the perfect spot between honest suspense and cheerful humour. That 'Astra' firmly belongs in the genre of SciFi is perhaps its greatest boon: while many of the plot points have been done before in various works of science fiction over the past decades, the lack of childfriendly SciFi will let them appear refreshingly original for a younger audience.

Nevertheless, there are many things the show does very well, but also quite a few points where it runs itself into the ground.

The cast, for example, experiences genuine character growth; however, they are initially so absolutely stereotypical that it's honestly annoying.

Similarly, the story hits many excellent plot points and has quite a few twists and turns that I did not see coming. Unfortunately, at other points it is utterly foreseeable or makes use of some of the worst dei-ex-machina that I have ever witnessed.

It is, though, a very childfriendly show, which is excellent in my books. There is no absurd violence, no romance farther than hand-holding, and no fan service (discounting the beach episode, but even Avatar: the Last Airbender had one of those).

The production value of the show is pretty good; the English localisation (both the voice acting and the onscreen texts) are excellent.

If you have never seen SciFi other than perhaps Star Wars before, you'll possibly find 'Astra' a refreshingly unique tale. If you'd like to introduce SciFi to young teens, this show is for you. Otherwise, your mileage may vary.

Amazing premise bogged down by poor writing
enderazophie-0660315 June 2022
Anyone will notice the animation and sci-fi elements of this show are top notch. The problem is that the show focuses heavily on a very plain dynamic, which is all of the characters growing as friends. They came up with so much creativity for the environment, then squander it all by zooming in on each character's past on Earth. The character development is genuinely very boring, and in that it's wholly unapproachable. I tried to stick around for the sci-fi adventure elements, because that stuff in this show is SO good... but I had to pull the escape hatch after episode 3 because the writing was so painfully plain and tedious. Truly disappointing.

A survival series, but in space!
vipul_chaturvedi22 September 2021
There's plenty of its kind out there, but the characters keep it much more interesting than it had a right to be. As the story progresses, more and more focus is shifted away from the survival and towards drama, world-building, and politics. Good balance between serious parts and comedic relief, maintaining a generally upbeat tone without damaging its other qualities. Is helped by the fact that it has a very specific story to tell, and executes it as well as anyone could hope to, without sequel-baiting or filler; it is compact and to the point. Making the first and last episodes double length was a great idea, because the foreword and afterword are both lengthy and necessary, but they would have ruined the pacing if they were their own episodes. Visuals are nice and the 3DCG doesn't get in your face too much, and characters are distinguishable through more than just their hair colours, although they can be a bit too tropey at times. Nevertheless, it plays its tropes straight and unironically as a love song to sci-fi fans, so don't expect a ton of realism. Unfortunately, there was nothing in it that truly wowed me, so while it is a great and enjoyable watch, it isn't a timeless work of art or something.

As someone who has seen a LOT of anime - this is a diamond in the rough.
gingeryzane19 June 2021
This show brings so much joy and emotion through the excitement of adventure & friendship. It pushes the ideology to chase your dreams, but never at the expense of leaving another behind.

I would recommend this show to anyone - let it be the door into a different style of anime/show. The ability it has to connect you to each individual character is only matched by a handful of shows - many to be considered giants in the anime community. 10/10.

Mind blowing
patrickerumwunse14 March 2023
This anime took plot twists to a whole new level!

The story was awesome with a great build up, it wasn't too serious which is odd normally for shows with a similar premise, and the OP being really good was the knot on this gift of an anime. It started out calmly and just looked like one of those adventure anime where the characters would have to survive a series of events to reach their destination(still was tho)but the added twists and further elaborations pulled the story so nicely together. I'm not a fan of spoilers so I won't say much. I would recommend this to anybody, truly a good watch.

Convoluted
masonfewel12 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Say what you want about this show, but at least it's not boring. Each episode gets weirder and more convoluted and is packed with so much UNNECESSARY information it's kind of crazy. There's a good emotion core and the characters are good, but this show has way too much going on that didn't need to go on. There's so much that they ran out of time for most of them and just kind of introduced plot points and half-heartedly solved them and gave everyone a fairy tale ending. I thought kanata no astra was fun and interesting, but it was rather poorly written at times too.

A wonderful anime
bhermann-4060831 March 2020
Another one of my favorites. In 2063, eight high school students and one kid are flown out to a camp, but a glowing orb warps them nearly 5,012 light years away, meaning they need to get back home on a slow, dangerous trek across the universe, engaging in a vigorous journey. In the process, Luca Esposito reveals himself as intersex, although he may also be genderqueer. I enjoyed this as much as any of the others on this list, but at times the number of characters could be confusing to follow, which is why this it is has its current rating.

A great mystery plot
limpfan10622 April 2024
The best way I could describe this show is that it's part sifi adventure, part over the top soap opera to the point where you don't really know if it's a spoof or not. Then it turns into a great mystery, and no longer matters if it was ever supposed to be a spoof or not because the plot is so good. Short and sweet, after the first few episodes it really ramps up and then it's just one major plot twist after another, but they all make sense and it adds up to a very layered but still reasonably believable ending. It didn't need to be longer, but I wish it was just because it was such a fun show.

Interesting, if you can look past the silliness
chacham21 August 2020
Pros:
  • Good graphics
  • Interesting premise
  • Overall, nice progression
Meh:
  • A lot is predictable
Cons:
  • Individual stories are disjointed
  • Reactions are sometimes absurd
  • Explanations are boring

This anime is an interesting mix. It starts as a whodunit but doesn't go much in that direction. It ends up being about trust, survival, and discovery. The overall plot is interesting even where it isn't perfect.

Each episode is either something to overcome, a reveal, or both. Most of these are pretty bad. The way they overcome problems is either convenient or ridiculous, and reveals are boring. The worst reveal is in the first third of the final episode, which reminded me of the Architect in the Matrix. The show would probably have been much better off without it somehow.

Most of the characters are tropey, though almost all have some growth. The growth is usually instantaneous, and yet it ends up working well in the story. The voice acting is decent, though i thought one or two of them were not perfect fits. Not bad, just not perfect.

The story also makes good use of Checkov's gun, and does not add any useless details. They come back in surprising (and ridiculously convenient) ways. I thought they did that well.

One of the characters is added as a plot device to give more backstory and is hardly used otherwise. The show would be much better off without it.

The final episode is long and boring.

For anyone who enjoys the four temperaments, elements, etc.. the show is nice. I was able to guess what the fourth planet was based on the three before it. Personality types are pretty extreme, but they do a half decent job (and make fun of it nicely).

What carries the show is the premise, the progression, and a few of the challenges. I think it deserves a 7 or an 8, i rated 8 because i enjoyed it for the most part, and other than the final episode, wasn't bored at all. Even with all my nitpicks, i would easily recommend it for anyone interested in scifi.
