Robotic love
Of the newly introduced characters in the "Time is Money" and "Super Ducktales", so Bubba and Fenton/Gizmoduck, have always preferred the latter. Bubba is one of those characters that's not bad taken in small doses and not too heavily focused on but Fenton grew on me quicker and is a more compelling character, also a stronger, more endearing lead one. Am a bit more mixed on his Gizmoduck guise, not because of him himself but more how the other characters are for ones so clever so oblivious to spot the obvious connection between them.
"Metal Attraction" is a mostly good representation of him and serves him well. He serves as a character strong enough to be a lead in personality and presence, which was important for an episode that focuses so heavily on him. This may be something that will bother other fans, those that are not the biggest fans of him or don't want too much of The Fenton Crackshell Show (which is a very valid and understandable feeling to have as one's enjoyment is dependent on what your feelings are on Fenton/Gizmoduck).
It's not an episode that is going to work for everybody, and to me "Metal Attraction" isn't flawless. Gandra is not particularly interesting, bland to me, and veers on the passive, her seeming acceptance of Fenton's obsessiveness won't ring true for some as it can be argued understandably that it borders upon creepiness somewhat.
Wouldn't have said no to seeing much more of the other characters, the regulars have very little to do and what they have is not very memorable in comparison to the material given to the ones that dominate the episode.
As said though, Fenton is very watchable with the writers having fun with his personality traits while not overplaying his flaws. The chemistry between him and Gandra is purposefully not easy to watch but it didn't come over to me as a complete turn off to ruin the episode. Robotica though steals the show, she is creepy when she is deranged to the point of being terrifying but she is also hilarious. "Metal Attraction" contrasts the relationships between Fenton and Gandra and he and Robotica in a way that allows for some quite hilarious consequences, the latter being more dynamic with the handling of the contrast overall being remarkably sophisticated.
The animation is bright and colourful, and there are some very inventive moments in the character animation for Robotica. The music is dynamic and the theme song wonderfully catchy. A lot of the writing is smart and very funny, that for Robotica especially (am aware of going on and gushing about her, but she is so awesome), and the story is energetic and fun with a wonderfully absurdist atmosphere in places, especially towards the end. The voice acting is very well done, Hamilton Camp is very spirited but Susan Blu comes off most memorably.
Summing up, not a bad episode at all if not one of my favourites. 7/10
