Not terrible
TheLittleSongbird27 May 2022
On first watch, "Peebles' Pet Shop of Terrible Terrors" was an inoffensively decent if not particularly great episode, with some nice elements to the mystery but suffered from an inconsistent story and guest star. Wanda Sykes gelled really well with Scooby, but didn't seem to blend enough compared to other episodes before and especially since, or at least how it seems when first watching it as part of my quest for watching anything that is Scooby Doo.

Was mostly quite impressed by the previous two 'Scooby Doo and Guess Who' episodes, though both had imperfections. "Peebles' Pet Shop of Terrible Terrors" also impresses in a lot of areas and it is far from a terrible episode, but was personally more mixed on it and thought it weaker than the previous two while finding some aspects better. The pacing was much better here, but the guest star (Sykes in this case) was inferior and to me an episode's success rides on the guest star. That opinion may not go down too great, knowing other fans of Scooby Doo that enjoy this show that thought this an improvement.

"Peebles' Pet Shop of Terrible Terrors" succeeds very well in a lot of areas. The animation has a lot of atmosphere, rich colour and even richer attention to detail. It is especially good in the visually creative chase sequence, which is an entertaining one. The music is dynamic and groovy, also loved the modern spin on the iconic classic theme tune for 'Scooby Doo Where are You', although it is too short. The voice acting is very good, Matthew Lillard as ever nailing it as Shaggy. The monster is suitably creepy, the creepiest of the monsters up to this point of the show.

There are also a number of funny moments from Shaggy and Scooby. The mystery on the whole is also quite fun, it is a lot more eventful than remembered and there is a good deal more energy than the previous two episodes. Did feel sorry for Scooby here and the friendship between him and Sykes had a lot of heart, the heart of "Peebles' Pet Shop of Terrible Terrors" perhaps. The rapport between the gang and Sykes has some nice moments. Liked the Magilla tribute.

Sadly, "Peebles' Pet Shop of Terrible Terrors" is also one of the show's most predictable episodes. Namely the reveal, which is one of the most obvious ones in pretty much every way, also felt that some of the explanations came out of nowhere because the clues are not delved into enough. Some parts later on drag when the mystery starts to thin out.

As said, Sykes doesn't entirely work. She works best in her friendship with Scooby, but there is too much of her and her rapport with the gang is not always well balanced, with her personality dominating them. Almost like they were trying too hard to solve the problem the previous two episodes had of the guest stars being underused. Some of her lines veer on childish.

Concluding, a bit in the middle here. 6/10.

Featuring guests from 2 classic HANNA BARBERA cartoons!!!

Mr. Peebles is listed in the episode title so he is obviously in the episode. The second Hanna Barbera guest star is not hard to guess. The third HB guest star is just a cameo and from a different cartoon.

Also this episode stars Wanda Sykes and she is awesome in the show.

As the third episode of the series, following the scuba suits and the guest stars of the first two episodes, the episode sets the bar very high for the rest of the series as far as Hanna Barbera easter eggs. Obviously this show is not going to be the absolute Hanna Barbera love fest that the 2017 Wacky Races cartoon, but it really feels like it's going to do a bit of the classic call backs that the first episode of Be Cool Scooby Doo promised and then the rest of the series forgot about.

Mystery Incorporated stepped up what we could expect from a Scooby Doo series. And by the end of Be Cool, that series easily had the best writing of any Scooby Doo series. Guess Who si about giving us love and it's awesome.

As we have to wait a week between episodes, I end up watching these several times each, and this episode has been highly enjoyable on each rewatch.
