Chess, War and Grief
claudio_carvalho23 January 2009
Sarah meets Andy Goode and he tells her that he has rebuilt a new version of his computer, the Turk II, and he will participate of a chess tournament where the winner will sign a contract with the government for military purpose. Meanwhile Cromartie lures Charley Dixon, pretending to be an FBI agent and trying to get information about Sarah Connor. When Andy loses the competition and is found dead by Sarah, she fights against a stranger she assumes that is the criminal. The man is arrested but later Sarah finds that he is a member of the resistance and her brother-in-law sent by John from the future. Sarah, John and Cameron face a dangerous terminator while trying to rescue Derek Reese.

The engaging "Queen's Gambit" is the best episode so far of this series, with a good story based on the themes chess, war and grief. Sarah's monologue is makes an analogy between the strategies in a chess game and in the war, and all the lead characters grieve their loss, inclusive Cameron in the end after the destruction of the terminator. The attitudes of Cameron trying to understand the human behavior are great and her interview with the grief counselor is one of the best moments of the show. My vote is eight.

Death and chess
Tweekums13 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
It looked as if the destruction of The Turk chess computer meant that Andy Goode wouldn't need to be killed, unfortunately he has managed to make The Turk II, a computer which he has entered in a computer versus computer chess championship. As the winner of the competition gets a lucrative US Military contract it appears that the creation of Skynet hasn't been prevented. When he is defeated it appears that Andy will be OK but when Sarah goes to see him afterwards she finds him dead. She chases after a suspicions character she saw on her way to Andy's room but he is arrested before she can find out who he is. When Cameron recognises him they realise they must rescue him from police custody before a terminator can get to him.

This was a good episode with plenty of excitement, in particular the scene where Cameron fights another terminator in the back of a moving prison van. The episode also provides a nice introduction to a new character from the future. Some levity is is provided by a scene where Cameron shows little emotion when talking to a grief councillor about the suicide of a fellow student.

Terminator:The Sarah Connor Chronicles-Queen's Gambit
Scarecrow-8810 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Andrew Goode has created a new Turk and aligned himself with a Russian chess master, the two competing in a "computer versus computer" tournament, the winner getting a military contract. Brian Austin Green is introduced in a big part as Kyle Reese's brother, Derek, a resistance fighter sent into the past. Derek was the fourth member of the resistance fighters who got away while his brethren fell prey to the T-8000. Derek was hoping to steal the Turk but found Andy dead, the computer gone, running into Sarah who ambushed him(she thought he killed Andy), soon arrested by the police. Meanwhile, a T-8000 is programmed to kill Derek who is being transfered by agent Ellison into federal custody. Sarah, Cameron, and John hope to rescue him before the T-8000 can get to him. The mystery of this episode is where the Turk was taken, who killed Andy, and how to retrieve the computer from those who could use it to resurrect Skynet. Further subplots include Chromartie posing as an agent to get information out of Charlie(who tells his nurse wife that he has seen John), Cameron's visit to a guidance counselor in regards to the suicide(he reveals in his worried face a possible correlation to the events which led to the girl leaping from the building to her death), and Reese's bloody gunshot wound which requires outside medical attention(which will obviously spark an interesting development between Charlie and Sarah). There's also a potential teen romance in the future for John as he has interest in a girl with "damage", whose parents are overly protective for some reason. I'm intrigued in the whole angle involving the suicide girl, pondering where this development is leading. Solid action sequence at the end where Cameron, for a change, gets the best of the T-8000 trying to kill Derek, removing a chip which powers it. Sarah also takes Derek to the woodshed before later finding out who he really is.

Queen's Gambit is the best episode of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" so far
tavm12 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Sarah gets a call from Andy Goode, the guy whose house she blew up when she realized his computer-Turk-would be in Skynet's future, and finds out he made a new one that's being entered in a chess contest with Japan with the winning country getting a contract with the military. With John and Cameron in tow, Sarah watches as the American picked by Goode seems to be winning but at the last minute the Japanesse woman wins by default. At school, Cameron asks John about all the notes the girl who committed suicide, Jordan, is getting. He replies, "Somtimes crying's not enough." Cromartie, in the form of an FBI agent that he killed, arrives at Charley's house asking about Sarah Conner. Charley explains he knows a Sarah Resse not a Sarah Conner. After the agent leaves his card, his wife Michelle says she knows by his "tell" when he's lying. So he tells her the truth about seeing John when he broke in while she was gone. After Andy got angry at his partner for losing, he later turns up dead as Sarah discovers him as such just after seeing someone come from his room accidentally hitting her. She then confronts him knocking him down just as some cops arrest him. Later, when she goes to his cell in disguise, she finds out from him he's her former lover's, and John's father's, brother Derek. Back at school, the guidance counselor asks Cameron about Jordan since Cameron is the last person Jordan saw. He gets Jordan's last words from her in Jordan's own voice that must have given him some chills. He then lets her go. After Sarah gets Derek out of jail, another Terminator breaks in his door and finds him gone leading to a chase that climaxes this episode. Needless to say, Cameron defeats the Terminator after he loses him arm and gets a button in his head screwed off. She also tries to fix the wound the Terminator shot on Derek who initially resists because of what she is before Sarah says, "She's on our side." The wound is too big so Sarah tries to use her tazer to find the nearest doctor but John goes instead and finds Charley who appears stunned at seeing Sarah before working on Derek...This was a very exciting episode with a tighter plot and more interesting characterization. I am also impressed at the development of Agent Ellison with his finding that Terminator's hand near the end of this episode. Also, how cool is it seeing former "Beverly Hills, 90210" player Brian Austin Green as Derek? The stubble on him pretty much made me forget he was once David Silver. Also, it was once again cool to see Sonya Walger-Penny on "Lost"-as Charley's wife Michelle. Hope her character doesn't die too soon. And it was nice to see Cameron become a little more human first by trying to get Sarah to write her feelings about Andy's death by offering her a pencil (of course, Sarah breaks them!), then seeing Cameron herself sitting at a desk with paper on them. And that chase that I referred to was the most exciting I've seen on this series so far! So in summary, Queen's Gambit was the best episode of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" I've seen right now. Until next time...

Dynamic and concise
scumhero5 September 2023
No pretense to an actual review, just want to share my general impression and some observations with everyone. Yes, it truly is an excellent episode. Characters from separate storylines come up in one place in a very seamless manner in a limited time frame for the episode's space.

Based on the similarity of the scenes and the type of secondary antagonist, I have a feeling that the episode was inspired by the Dobermann movie. That's probably why it came off so dynamic and addictive, but not out of step with the style of the series and the universe as a whole.

During my viewing, I wished the episode had lasted longer.

Death of a Salesman...
Xstal8 August 2022
The Turk gets to play, but things don't go its way, as the mastermind is murdered, Skynet's future might be furthered, and a relative encounter, ends with a bit of a downer, as old friends meet again, but it's surrounded by some pain.
