Warning: Spoilers
This is my first 'From Software' game. For many years all I seemed to hear about this studio was the truly punishing difficulty that they implement into their games.

It's almost gaming lore at this point that these games can be unfairly hard and will almost always make you rage. Dark souls, demon's souls etc are all well renowned for this, so I initially felt uneasy as I didn't want to smash a controller through my brand new tv.

I held off for one whole week. I watched as streamers played through the game and seeing them learn and overcome was fun and exciting to watch but I still found myself debating what to do, until I seen my friends list gradually start playing Elden ring one by one and decided to jump in. I'm more than thankful I did.

What I discovered was a challenging yet thoroughly rewarding game that has almost the perfect open world totally filled with hidden secrets and rooms, exciting open world fights, unwalked and sometimes very tricky areas to navigate and on top of all that its also unbelievably stunning to witness.

Regarding difficulty, there is a reason why this game is widely considered the perfect game for 'From Software' first timers. The game itself can be VERY difficult and can be truly punishing at times, but there are more than enough ways to grow your character and become stronger before facing a tough enemy or challenge. One thing that helps this is it's an entirely open world, so you have free reign to go and farm as much as you want and level yourself up early if you wish. From someone who is very OCD and likes to explore every corner of a map this meant that I thankfully find myself in a unique position of being very high level in the opening area and feel much more comfortable at facing any challenges to come.

Elden ring in turn has created the perfect environment for all players, For the hardcore gamers or those who want to truly challenge themselves they can choose when to level up, and for new players or dedicated explorers they can do the same. This is something that is vital in attracting such a wide ranging audience the way Elden ring has. As of writing this Elden Ring has sold 10 million copies on steam alone in just over a week. The number on Xbox and PlayStation are yet to come in but I am certain they will be astronomically high also. Elden Ring is on track to break many sales records and it really does deserve those accolades.

One of the lessons you learn almost instantly as you begin playing Elden Ring is unlike other games where you can run in and bash buttons killing everyone in sight, you can't do that here. The key example of this is when you enter your first area Limgrave, you look across the nearby ledge and see a very large knight on a horse. This enemy is known as the 'Tree sentinel' and is almost always going to be too tough to fight regardless of how good you are. You have a choice to make, do you go in head on and probably spend a large amount of time and dozens of deaths to defeat this man, or do you bypass him for now and find a way to make yourself stronger before returning and showing him who's boss. The game is constantly challenging you to think about how you approach an enemy, but not only that, it challenges you just to navigate its world.

Almost all other games have a map that is comprised of mostly flat surfaces and easy to navigate roads and paths, but with Elden Ring certain areas can be filled with high cliffs and conveniently hidden buildings and structures, making you having to take a step back and think about your path forward.

In terms of collectible items I love the system implemented. There are very strong weapons, shields, potions, and various other items hidden throughout the world with most people going one or even multiple play throughs without finding everything. What's so good about this is there is always a sense of "I wonder what amazing item I will find next" and it's an almost polar opposite to Ubisoft games that feature hundreds of items that you have to boringly walk around collecting.

The story itself on a base level is pretty interesting but as I went forward I found myself more sidetracked by smaller stories of how the enemies you face became who they are today, who your allies were and what drove them, thus the overarching main storyline took a backseat. The legendary George R. R Martin (Game Of Thrones) was said to be involved with the making of this games story and lore, however just how much input he had is something that still isn't known.

The gameplay is what makes Elden Ring so special. I'm particularly a huge fan of the risk reward combat style. For example you can hide behind a shield and block a shot but hitting the attack button doesn't mean you always land. It's a knowing when to attack, knowing when to roll, knowing when to block style of combat, and what's so good about that is you actively witness yourself getting better at the game and getting your timing down so you're landing more shots and receiving less damage. Spirit ashes are something that's new to the series and it can really help with taking down the harder enemies. You ring a bell and summon the spirit of a fallen warrior who helps you on the battlefield. It's helpful but it's also fun to experiment with different summons such as Wolves, skeletons and even a large jellyfish. Along with so many other options to change your style of attack are things like Ashes of war, spells that can be put on an item to give off special effects and increase damage done or grant protection. These combinations are almost endless and give the game so much replay-ability to try out new combos and styles of play.

Graphics are something that really surprised me. The art style is simply beautiful to view, with bright glowing trees, colourful skies, shiny glistening armor, large dark palleted castles, and so much more.

The only negative I've heard surrounding this game is the optimisation and how the frame rate can dip very low at times, especially on PC. While I play exclusively on Xbox Series X I can say I've really struggled to notice any low frame rates even at times where there are heavy mobs of NPC's, large explosions on screen etc. In fact I have experienced precisely zero bugs or glitches at all. Which is a miracle in the modern slap dash gaming era. There are 2 modes on current gen consoles, frame rate and quality. I prefer to play on frame rate mode as it offers almost double the frames all while giving you a resolution that is not a noticeable drop from 4K.

There are so many other things I would love to talk about here like the incredibly diverse range of bosses and how they all are unique and offer special and quite frankly scary move sets. There are also so many other systems, UI choices, guidances or lack of, world design etc that I could talk about all day but I'll leave it by saying:

Overall I have to say this is the first game in a long time where I find myself waking up truly excited to instantly jump back and go explore, fight, learn and grow in a game that has well and truly captivated me. For me it's instantly became one of the best games I've ever played, and if you look at most of the reviews on here and elsewhere you'll realise that most people feel the same. A game that will challenge you in ways that no others will, but it will reward you in equal measure, keeping the balance between risk and reward completely level at all times, it's honestly a one of a kind game that I'll always remember. 10/10.

As someone who's never played a Souls game, there's only one flaw I can think of
sniperman-990056 March 2022
I know the massive appeal for Souls games is their complexity, and I even understand why people enjoy this. I'll be honest, for me, it's mostly the same. I love that I actually have to work at getting better at the game and learning a boss's moves instead of just spamming them to death, but there's one thing I don't love. It's what made me rate it with a 9 instead of a 10.

I don't like how there's no quest log. You basically just have to either memorize every encounter with a questgiver, or do the quest immediately and even then, you still have to pay very close attention to know what to do. This is something I could've done without. I understand the mindset of Souls fans. I know people love this, but as someone who's new to FromSoftware games, it's a bit annoying.

I think they've done a really good job at welcoming newcomers to the SoulsBorne games with Elden Ring, but what would have made it perfect is to give us an option to toggle objectives and quest logs on or off. That way, the Souls fanbase would be pleased as well as the newcomers like me, who want to complete everything. This map and game is huge and overwhelming enough without constantly having to look things up on my phone.

That's really the only problem I have with the game though. The combat, the aesthetic, the music, world/boss design and weapon/gear design are all top notch. This game is definitely going to be a GOTY contender!

Great game
fuad_tarin_588 March 2022
Ok, so i am completley new to these type of soul games. I played first demon soul when it came out and gave up after maybe 2houers. I just didnt enjoy it and found it way to hard.

Now i started elden ring and i will first say this is not a joke game. If you are looking for an easy game you should go on to something else. And all the haters saying the graphic is bad and there is loads of bugs and other issues then either your playstation is crap or you are lying because i dont have any of those issues at all. And graphic btw is a 9/10, its great.

Now ive played arround 40houers and i really like the game. From the start i was abit confused but the more i playd the more i learned.

If a boss or an enemy is to hard for you back of and go somewhere else. Its an open world game and you can go whereever you want. I didnt kill the second boss till i was level 35. It is hard but just level up and even you and me can kill bosses and enemys.

Its a great game. Dont give up if you are abit stucked. Search help on google and youtube and with a bit help it will get easier.

This game is a 9/10 for me.

Only 10!
shaokahn-5442525 February 2022
What can I say. Mr. Miyazaki does what he is good at (I mean the genre). And rightly so, a person should do what he has no equal in. I'm not a fan of video games, I'm more of a film critic than a gamer. But one day a friend gave me four discs, one was written Bloodborne. I completely began to live the game Bloodborne, after that I studied All the games in the Souls series. Elden Ring is waiting for the same thing, I don't want to throw on and praise this next * MASTERPIECE. (No matter what you draw beautiful pictures in front of you in advance) I'll just say that my rating is 10 out of 10. That's it. This game should be for everyone who looks to the future. Good luck and enjoy your game...

Anything less than a 10 is wrong.
phelectric2 March 2022
We don't want anymore hand holdy games. This is what we have all been waiting for. Done with Assassin's Creed and Far Cry's "honey-do-list" style of game maps. Old and boring. Elden ring is by far the most amazing game I've ever played. Truly open world and free roaming. They've also implemented so many ease of life things with making the game very challenging. Mind blowing. If they release DLC or add on to it I will be stoked. High-Five guys you nailed it! My only couple critiques are, too much crafting stuff, even though you can get by without all of it. Also could use some more Katanas, bows and weapons for the Samauri. Been rocking his starting weapon for quite some time lol.

Well worth the wait
Severinplates85326 February 2022
As an avid souls fan this was everything I wanted it to be. I got the pre order yesterday and have enjoyed everything I have played so far. No glitches or problems and the download time was really quick.

The game kind of blends the gameplay of Sekiro and dark souls together giving you much more freedom to experiment as well as all kinds of stealth and jumping mechanics. Luckily there is no posture or anything as I don't like that system from Sekiro personally.

Sekiro was a great game but I prefer the non linear story and more experimental gameplay (more weapons, armour, magic builds, dexterity builds, ect) of the other games in the series, as well as the excellent character customisation.

Even though I have only played around 5-6 hours it it is already one of the best open world games in my opinion with such a detailed and explorative world full of so many interesting locations and creatures. There are all kinds of new features and details that almost make the older games obsolete and made me ask why they didn't add that before.

In the previous games when you hit a difficult boss you were locked into beating them to continue. Due to elden rings open world design however you can easily come back to a boss after exploring and upgrading your character. You could do this in the older games but had to face the boss eventually, in elden ring there is so much side content and other areas to explore you can almost ignore the main story entirely and complete it at your own leasure.

The game does a great job of giving you enough freedom to explore and not give you a direct path whilst still having a set goal to get to. You have a marker and map, but they are so well utilised it doesn't affect the game at all. It also does a fantastic job at introducing the souls gameplay to new players, with an actual tutorial at the beginning. It is not in your face and is an optional part of the starting area.

There is one flaw in my opinion, the open world is so expasive that progression is more difficult than the other games in my opinion. After playing for a decent amount of time I still only have my starting weapon. There are weapons available from stores and such but none from enemies or ones you find, which is the best way to get them usually in other souls games.

This is not a big problem as it is more of a personal thing. I just love exploring the world anyway and I'm sure there are many weapons available.

In short ths game is just fantastic and does not disappoint at all. Easily recommend to any souls fan and anyone in general. Probably the best place to start the series as the game kind of encapsulates everything great about it. I already want to get back to and explore the game, just so glad it is as great as it is.

This game is something else.
Elden Ring has quickly become 2022's greatest pop-cultural phenomenon; in these unpredictable times it's games like this (let alone immersive narrative experiences) that give us new appreciation for fantasy storytelling as a whole.

Elden Ring has everything: horseback travel, fast-travel, interesting characters encouraging you to keep digging into the world to know more about its history, punchy swordplay, scale and scope to remember, and boss-battles that leave you feeling extra fulfilled when you've won after God-knows-how-many-attempts. The fantasy genre has always been ripe for video games to explore thanks to their emphasis on exploration and overcoming challenges, and Elden Ring feels like it's a summation of everything JRR Tolkien, George RR Martin (obviously), Zelda, Skyrim and the Souls games (Bloodborne too) to make up an experience that's something else.

This is an example of gaming and storytelling coming hand-in-hand where the progression of the player progresses the story in turn. Elden Ring is challenging yet rewarding, expansive yet not too overwhelming in its scope, hard yet adaptable, and fun yet immersive that the world ceases to be fake in the eyes (and minds) of the player.

Elden Ring gets 5/5 stars. It's a great time to be had for gamers everywhere.

Absolutely Amazing!
xanderwebb-4789025 February 2022
This is without a doubt the best gaming experience I've ever had! The world is vast yet dense with many MANY secrets to uncover, the story is mostly indirect but very rewarding to look into, the soundtrack is top notch, and the enemies and bosses are extremely well designed with fantastic variety! This game is extremely difficult even for someone like me who has played through Demons Souls, every Dark Souls Game, Bloodborne, and Sekiro multiple times! But the difficulty is never frustrating. If you get stuck on a boss or a level just go do something else, come back when you feel like you have more skill or you've leveled up. I played on PS5 and had no issues but keep in mind that as of now the PC version has some framerate and graphical glitch issues. These issues could possibly get fixed later on however.

Game MADE BY THE GODS...
isiahjfernandez3 March 2022
I am new to the souls franchise I am a complete noob at this game I realized this as soon as I experienced the first boss. Nevertheless this game is hand crafted by the gods from the dust of angelic wing feathers merged with the essences of the sun...oh my god there is not a day that goes by where I'm not thinking about the game.

Note: I restarted the game 5x trying different classes I liked I haven't gotten to far just wanted to see what I was going to like so far its the Samurai.

Everything has brought us to this moment.
josephellis1 March 2022
Every game From Software has made over the years, everything they learned in development has brought us this. And it's beautiful. Combining the elements of Dark Souls 1, 2, and 3. Bloodborne, and Sekiro. Everything blends so perfectly. And it's still maintains a challenge that is hard but so rewarding. So many new bosses! Weapons! Abilities, Mechanics, to keep this genre of games fresh. From Software has never made a game on this scale before and it works.

In this day, I don't buy videogames on release anymore. Too expensive and often disappointing and unfinished. But From Software is a company that will uphold quality. They never rush art and it shows. This game is worth the $60. If you wanna wait for a price drop go for it. If you're into overcoming challenges and learning you will love this game. If you fear and hate death don't buy it. You'll die over and over and likely break a controller. Which is why when you play these masterpieces, you must be willing to learn and endure, like all Souls-Likes.

The greatest adventure world, by far
hersheyjoe12 March 2022
*First time souls player that always plays RPGs on easy easy mode FYI*

When you first get into the world, you are surrounded by beauty and will be overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the world... and the danger at every corner. There is so much variety in this game. I recommend you avoid spoilers for bosses/areas as best you can, each new area is jaw dropping, and the deeper into the game you get, the better it becomes.

You start in Limgrave, a large and beautiful area. The first part of the game leading up to the first big boss is a fantastic introduction to the mechanics and cycle of frustration/elation that Elden Ring is. Virtually everywhere you look, you can go, and that can be daunting or exciting depending on the player. But exploring everything is so worth it. After moving on from the first two area's/bosses, you will start to see the curtains pulled on the truly next-level moments and environments the game has to offer.

You will love the sense of adventure, character building, and challenge that the beginning of the game offers, but prepare yourself for the bar to be continually raised as you get deeper into the game with SIGNIFICANTLY cooler areas, bosses, and story paths to take as you go on.

I've played nearly 50 hours in less than 2 weeks, something no other game has even come close to moving me to do. I could praise the combat, the character customization, the lore you pick up in pieces, but for me what makes Elden Ring so incredible is the landscapes you find yourselves in, the feeling of discovering something magical, and the unlimited potential to go anywhere, do anything, and find your own unique experience.

For a spoiler free journey, I recommend starting off with a youtube guide on what to do as a beginner, then after defeating each main boss (where cutscenes play), look up spoiler free suggestions at what to do after *insert boss name* so you don't get overwhelmed by choice, and have an idea of what areas will not be soul crushing based on your level. Check out "getcheddar" on youtube when you are looking for these hints.

Quite possibly game of the year
DomiWood7 March 2022
To say that this game managed to live up to the hype is not enought as a compliment to describe what an amazing expierence this truly is.

This game really is something special, instead of outstanding graphics we get outstanding art direction, instead of typical old fashioned open world expierence with all the quests we get an expierence full of philosophy and freedom that allows us to discover and do things the way we want giving more rewarding expierence.

And of course we get good old souls game formula of different difficult bosses ,mobs and mechanics instead of new and innovative game mechanics that other developers desperately try to add in their games with no success.

Why ? Because its simply not needed.

Despite everything I mentioned above everyone is loving Elden Ring, the ultimate risk of open world souls game paid off and I couldn't be happier. This game will be remembered for years to come and might aswell grab game of year status along the way.

One of the most overrated games of all time
C0DEWiNTER28 August 2022
This is by far the worst Fromsoft Soul game to date. It's Easy (for me) and very hard (for others) at the same time because its unbalanced. Mostly though its on the Easy side because of its open-world.

I am not bashing the game just because its easy but because it was forgettable and boring the whole way through. Very bad and cheap bosses, and they are recycled the whole game with only more HP each time.

Little enemy variety, they get recycled and specially by the last part of the game. Very few main bosses and mostly they were boring and forgettable.

The NPCs are very few for such a big game. Upgrade items are such a pain to find. I got tired of exploring emptiness. Most of the map is empty. I explored about 90% of the whole map and nothing was special at all.

The game was very bad at launch, its important to mention. Absolutely utter crap optimization. I had to wait till now to play it after so many patches, finally it got a bit more stable. No widescreen support either even after all the patches shame on the developers.

One of the most over-hyped and overrated games of all time. If this is your first Soul game, then I kind of understand why you would overrate this game.

For me after finishing All souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro and both of NiOH. I found this to be very underwhelming in most aspects.

Sekiro in my option is the best Fromsoft game it was polished and complete. And also Revolutionary of a game. It feels like Fromsoft went back many steps with Elden Ring. Very disappointing.

There are videos on Youtube that explains why this is From Softwares weakest soul game to date.

I Went back and played DS3 after I finished Elden Ring, the combat is smoother in DS3 and does not have a weird delay. The bosses are hundred times better made. Each boss had like at least 3 phases. They were unique and intense. The world was well thought and more memorable. The weakest thing with DS3 is that it was a bit liner but I'd take that over the emptiness of Elden Ring.

Finished Elden Ring just under 60h and did take most of the bosses in the map. Most of the time spend was walking around and riding the horse, no fun at all. I just search for some action and every time I finally found a boss I killed it in 5 seconds and was disappointed.

That's my take on this game. I didn't want to write a review, but I had to because people only talking about how this game is perfect. As if gaming is done after this game or something.

If you looking for a really beautiful open world to explore then nothing beats Witcher 3. And if you are looking for great bosses and good combat then go where its really at and that is games like Sekiro, Nioh2, DS3, Bloodborne. These games puts you right into the action from the beginning to the end yet they deliver a memorable and fine crafted world.

There are many other things I could mention about E. R. but it would take lots of time and its just not worth it.

When does it get fun?
white-462925 August 2022
Many times I hear the sentiment that souls games are very challenging yet gratifying once you overcome the challenge of a difficult section or boss and I can absolutely identify with this. Elden Ring presents the challenge of plodding defensive fights that require the player to be patiently waiting and dodging a 15 second combo sequence and attack an opening, only to do a tiny amount of damage. This is every boss and or enemy I fought. Rinse and Repeat. This is how I was able to overcome any enemy I'd encountered in the game. This exact strategy is difficult to master, but if played perfectly will never fail. Where this strategy does fail to deliver is in the fun department. It's tedious, humdrum ,monotonous and all the other synonyms I can google for 'very boring'. I've also used this strategy in other games...and when I did I referred to it as 'cheesing'. It wasn't fun then and it's not fun now, except in the Elden Ring this is the way to win if you are a melee build. Ok Ok...so I get it just use magic the game is much easier that way. This is a correct statement. The game is much easier if you use magic or co-op or summons. Employing this strategy pegs the difficulty meter to the other end of the spectrum..it's so easy it trivializes many encounters. There is no middle ground to be found....the game never presents a challenge when also being fun. That's my experience after 20 hours of playing...at least the game looks pretty ok.

Don't listen to Twitter or 1 star reviews!
nipjcrbe8 May 2022
This game is worth playing. It's worth buying a gaming console for. It's worth buying an entire house just so you can use the TV to play it with.

Don't listen to the low-star reviews or anyone on twitter. This game has more story than those people's entire lives. You will find hours of fun in this game, and I can concur with that because I have played almost 150+ hours now, and I am still having fun.

Then again, this game isn't going to take you ten hours to beat. It also it's going to be easy either. There is no difficulty slider, so you must level up your skill to be able to keep up. Don't expect to beat any boss on the first try either, it took me a good 10 hours before I could figure out the first boss, but from there you understand the flow.

Please, I'm begging you... get. This. Game.

A game from the 90s
jeonitsoc20 June 2022
I didn't know anything about this game, i bought it because i saw a scene of a guy fighting a dragon while riding a goat.

I never played From Software games before. I'm 36 and the first true open world game i played and loved was Morrowind.

My favorite game is Half-Life.

My favorite ARPG was Diablo II.

After you taste Elden Ring all other ARPGs will have a different appeal.

The experiences this game offers are simply incredible; the map is large and full of jaw dropping vistas and enemies, in a dark gritty gothic style that mixes all the most popular fantasy genres: from The Lord of Rings to Conan the Barbarian, Harry Potter, Berserk, the cosmic horrors of the Chtulhu Mythos (Hastur mainly), Princess Monoke and others.

This game requires you to take a breath from time to time, it pushes players to the limit with many of its challenges.

The controls and the freedom of engagement make the learning curve pretty steep, it feels lime learning how to drive a bike: impossible first try, but exhilarating after you get the gist of it. Its mostly a matter of reading the movements of the enemy and react accordingly, like a musician being directed in an orchestra.

Exploration in this game redefines the standard for open world games, there are surprises and secrets hidden behind every corner.

Replayability is ensured by the vastness of the map and variety of playstyles, not by gambling addiction.

Kudos to the developers.

So many secrets
LK37517 October 2022
This game borders on being too much. Too many weapons, too many areas, too many items... too many secrets. But the reality is that is it all done to near perfection. Everything from the traversal to the settings to the lore; it's basically perfect. The one thing that stands out the most are the side quests. Just when I thought Ranni's quest was the best side quest ever created, I find myself totally captivated with Fia's quest. The other thing is that you can basically play however you want and it is all enjoyable: mage build, tank build etc. It is hard to imagine another video ever coming close to reaching the standard that this masterpiece has set. Just make sure to clear your calendar.

'Dark Souls goes openworld' equals 'the best game ever that even tops all of Miyazaki's previous masterpieces'
hakobyanhakob8117 March 2022
Miyazaki and Martin make quite a team presenting this new incredibly rewarding and completely fresh vast open world designed from scratch with plenty to explore/loot and huge abundance of bosses.

After playing for 2 weeks and having defeated at least 10 something bosses, I realized I had barely even scratched the surface, and even at the early stage Elden Ring provides a decent challenge. At the end of the day I'm sure it'll turn out way more challenging than Dark Souls 3 and even Sekiro, however, this time Miyazaki aims for an entertaining gameplay as well, and that's thanks to the highly effective level up system and the fact that you start both with a decent amount of stamina and robust flexibility, encouraging fans to upgrade their physicality first and only then the sorcery.

Without exaggeration the best game I've played, and 97% on metacritic is more than well deserved. Elden Ring will obviously be recognized the game of the year, topping even Sekiro's success.

To summarize, it is now the time to officially admit that Miyazaki is the absolute king of gaming industry. An unbelievably talented guy whose works I've been admiring for over a decade now.

I can't stop playing!
RenegadeHermit29 March 2022
I've never played a Fromsoft game before and despite that I'm having a blast. The beginning was brutal, but now my only problem is figuring out what I should do next. The game isn't as hard as it seems, so don't be scared if you're on the fence because they're are a lot of helpful sources online and other players to ask for help. I recommend trying this game.

For those that say that the game is too hard
DantiMovies17 March 2022
If you find yourself complaining about how little instructions, hard bosses, and difficult play style. Maybe you should try candy crush on easy mode.

This is the true definition of open world, you get to choose your own adventure and the only guide is yourself, no handicaps or mercy. The learning curve is very steep but highly rewarding.

Most certainly one of the best open world games I have played in years.

An Amazing Journey!!
Ember_TSeal21 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have never played any soulsborne games before. Well, I did play Dark Souls 3 for first couple of hours but then gave up because I kept getting confused about the controls, being a keyboard-mouse player. However, Elden Ring was a completely different experience.

I'm a sucker for open-world games, however, Elden Ring's open world is entirely different from all other open-world games I've played so far - ignoring Skyrim. This game gives you a map - a simple PAINTED map, not one already filled with quest marker, checkpoints and what not - and then tells you: go. Go explore. And in my opinion, this is what open-world games should be like! An amazing unique world to explore, interesting characters, epic bossfights and beautiful soundtrack. After the second boss, Rennala, I fell in love with this game and wasn't able to put it down till I finished my first playthrough.

Unlike all other games, this one requires a lot of effort from your side, even with summons. You do need to get good to overcome the challenges imposed to you, and that's why after winning every fight, clearing every dungeon, you feel a good level of satisfaction.

And, I love torrent. <3

But obviously, it's not a perfect game and has it's flaws. There are copy-paste locations - something that all open-world games seem to suffer from. This is seen mostly in catacombs and tunnels, more in catacombs as they are more in number. I was a completionist and cleared every catacomb in Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula, but slowly I started to dislike them and skipped most of them later. Tunnels were fun though, so I did explore all of them.

Another flaw is with the quest system in Elden Ring. It isn't a linear game, and there are so many possibilities for choosing an area for exploring, so following the questlines and successfully completing them without a guide seems impossible, unless you do 100% exploration which I didn't want to do. I'm not asking for quest markers... but if the NPCs were a bit clear on where they would be found next (like the cut Kale quest who leaves messages), it could be better. Still liked the quests, and I'm sad for my bros Alexander and Blaidd :(

The end-game also suffers from a problem. Most bosses are AOE spamming and RNG based there - especially Elden Beast. In one attempt I got Elden Stars, Sword Attack and Raining Arrows all at once, and in my winning attempt I only got Sword Attack once. Even my mimic tear summon stayed alive till the end. I unfortunately didn't feel that amazing beating him. That same feeling from Margit or Rennala or Rykard wasn't there. :( I get that there are souls veterans winning the game at RL1 wretch, but well, I'm not that good. :'')

But besides these, it's one of the best, if not the best game I've ever played. Looking forward to do Journey 2 with a different build after relaxing with some simple games :D

Thank you Fromsoft for this masterpiece!

Breathtaking adventure that slightly falls apart.

As said in the title its truly a breathtaking game, the graphics, bosses, beautiful scenery and weapons will all pleasantly surprise you. It seems there's something around every single corner, whether that thing wants to kill you or reward you, its equally amazing. Where this game shines is in its freedom and its spectacular first half which is immersive and challenging, using the aforementioned freedom to give players a seemingly endless array of solutions to these challenges that manage to be both frustrating and addictive (like the other souls games, and don't forget Sekiro and Bloodborne which in my opinion perfected this style of gaming). Players will struggle with the first story boss, but due to Elden Ring's huge and immersive world, players feel encourages to simply explore what it has to offer and then return to the fight when they're ready. You can find better gear, level stats, craft new items, which can be obtained from just riding around on your horse enjoying the beautiful scenery, and seeing some loot or enemies in the distant. The first 30 hours or so are everything I wanted from this game... and then there's the halfway point, where things go slightly downhill.

I may be sounding slightly dramatic, it isn't a nosedive in quality, but the difference is there. Personally, i wasn't as adventurous anymore from Mountaintop of the Giants to the end of the game. This is due to 2 things.

1. Overused enemies getting boring to fight against, most being mini bosses in the early game used way too many times. I was no longer excited to discover new challenges, because in the end i'd just find another Crucible Knight.

2. Extreme mount of damage, unfair even. Even miniature enemies took huge chunks off my HP every hit. I had over 50 vigor, but that wasn't enough for regular enemies to absolutely destroy me in a few hits whilst i'm trying to explore.

Bosses especially can reduce you down to a single AOE, with neverending combos that only allow you to get a single hit in or two. Some bosses feel designed for certain builds (*cough cough Maliketh cough cough*). That being said these aren't game ruining experiences, if you find it too hard you can summon spirits, people or just cheese the boss you're struggling on if you truly can't find another way. I felt like changing my build because it often felt like some form of OP bleed or sorcery build was required just to stand a chance. Don't let this put you off though, it's an excellent game with fantastic lore for you to follow and dark souls combat with more fluidity, and it does stick the landing at the end.

You do get through those seemingly impossible challenges, everyone does, but at times Elden Ring really tested how long you're willing to wait.

Great but missed the mark

Fromsoft games are usually an experience that amazes, and while Elden Ring has all the typical components of a Fromsoft title, it's bosses and mobs are overbalanced compared to the player. Especially in mid to late game. From the start, tracking, reach, and speed of bosses are insane. I've played FS titles before and never had more than the average beginning issues when someone is first learning the game. Bosses can snipe you in one to two hits no matter your vitality, they anticipate what the player does and where they land and use AI input reading to do so. Rather than reacting to the player, the bosses know what we will do and react first. DS3 had a similar system, but their bosses were not overtuned with limitless combos, AOEs with no cooldown, and tracking. Most boss fights are spent running to the boss, dodging a 10 part combo, then going back to running to the boss. Fighting a boss in a FS title should and has consistently left the player feeling accomplished and revved up. The bosses in Elden Ring feel like trudging through something that was designed to be hard for difficulty sake and not something that's designed to encourage strategy and the player learning and anticipating a moveset they can work around. It doesn't feel like a dance, it's a stagger fest. The open world is beautiful, the NPCs and story are interesting, but the main staple of the game which is enemies and boss fights are unbalanced unless the player is using OP builds, which will probably be nerfed in updates to come. I wanted to like this game, but it's disappointing.

Elden Boring
andreichirita112 October 2022
When I first saw the trailer for Elden Ring, I thought an open world Dark Souls wasn't exactly a good idea, because Dark Souls games tend to become tedious in the later areas. Now, after spending 153 hours with the game, I still think it has been a bad idea.

All games are Skinner boxes. What makes From Software games special is that they rely on a variable-ratio schedule of reinforcement, while most games rely on a fixed-ratio schedule. Technical jargon aside, your typical game rewards the player (more or less) on a regular basis, while From Software games reward players now and then. This is what makes the games so addictive and that's the main reason people keep getting drawn to them, since a variable-ratio schedule tends to reinforce behavior the best (i.e., it's the most addictive). That works very well for a linear game of around 50 hours, but Elden Ring takes it a bit too far, almost extinguishing behavior at times (i.e., it can be quite boring).

It doesn't help, either, that graphics are severely outdated, while having the performance of something like Cyberpunk 2077 with RT on. Most of the time the game looks like The Elder Scrolls Online, with very low-resolution textures and 20 years-old vegetation. The animations are also outdated and controlling your character doesn't feel so good, making the combat slow and clunky. On the plus side, the art style is great, with masterful use of color and some of the best, most majestic, architecture ever seen in a game. Also, for the first time, we get to see dynamic weather and a day-night cycle in a From Software game.

There are numerous additions to the Souls formula, which make the gameplay more pleasant and more welcoming to new players. Out in the open, you benefit from having a mount, which allows you to escape dangerous situations, and I haven't encountered any mandatory boss in the open world (can't say if there is one), all can be skipped by moving along. Sneaking also makes some encounters less difficult, while exploration, especially in dungeons, benefits tremendously from jumping. Likewise, stamina doesn't get depleted while exploring the open world and defeating small groups of enemies replenishes your flasks. In the beginning, you can level up quite easily with the help of the new herb-picking mechanic. You can make a lot of runes by selling weeds and mushrooms. Also, you can now craft things on the go, but you will have to find tomes with recipes in the world. On the other hand, you can hardly find smithing stones for upgrading your weapons. These can be found only in caves initially and you have to go through a lot of enemies to get them.

As usual, the lore and plot are cryptic (though less so than in the other games), which would be great if they were just a bit interesting. They are not. They tried to make it appear more interesting by associating with G. R. R. Martin's name, but, if you've played the other Souls games, you can easily notice the huge amount of copy/paste, with some changed labels. There are some interesting characters, though. Good luck not missing their quests in this vast open world with no markers!

The combat is moderately satisfying for the most part, if you can ignore the aforementioned clunkiness. It doesn't help that a lot of bosses are fast like those in Sekiro, while you are slow like in... well, Dark Souls. What does help is the enormous variety of weapons, spells, and incantations, as well as a lot of buffing items. You also have summons with you all the time, but you can't activate them in all areas. Still, you can activate them when it matters. Weapons are infused with special attacks ("ashes of war") that can be changed at the bonfires ("sites of grace"), and these are the best-looking animations of the combat. Needless to say, they can be of great help, too. All Souls game had a lot of replay value, but the enormous weapons and accessories variety offers Elden Ring more than any other so far.

The best areas in the game are the so-called legacy dungeons. They have some of the best level design From Software has ever made and the best bosses in the game. Often, their graphical design is also beautiful, especially when contrasting it with the blandness of the open world. I would have enjoyed the game a lot more if it was just Dark Souls IV, with these dungeons connected by a hub, as per tradition.

As it is, the enjoyable moments in the game are few and far between. For all the additions to the formula, for all the complexity of the combat system, for all the weapon and enemy variety, it remains a sophisticated exercise in ennui.
