Lupin's alive and well
cybersonofsam12 November 2020
If you are a Lupin fan like I am (been watching him for 40 years) then you should enjoy this , ok I agree the cgi doesn't have the charm of the anime, but the characters are close enough , and what's more important the underlying characters are there so it feels right, sit back enjoy - decent storyline- good animation , definitely worth a bag of popcorn and a kiora anyday... hmmm and the halftime ice cream .

It's okay... but it's great at that.

Lower your expectations! This is a kid's movie. But it is a very good one, and quite worth the watch if you come in expecting to have a nice time and not over think what's going on on screen.

I feel like the movie itself eases you into such a mentality by itself and very early on.. so I was fine with every cliche and "expected" twist. I'd go as far as to say this isn't as "grand" as Tintin's movie Adventure. It's much smaller in scale and plot.. but as a fan of the character, this movie delivered in a fun adventure.

What I love most about this movie is (the look, of course) the small movements, details and interactions. The new female character is lovely and everything is expressed properly. You can tell that the people that animated this put a lot of time and effort into it. The same with whoever was in charge of dialogue (Japanese).

All in all, I recommend it for the piece of art that it is, and the cool animations.

A pretty good Lupin III outing
MissSimonetta25 January 2021
I heard a lot of people comparing this one to THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO-- quite a high standard. While I don't think LUPIN THE FIRST quite hits that lofty mark, it is a solid feature-length entry in the series. Like the original Red Jacket series, this movie is marked by slapstick and Indiana Jones style adventure. The more emotional elements of the script (represented by the Lettitia character) are rather conventional, but they work and never bog down the breakneck pacing. The animation looks pretty good on the whole, with the designs of these iconic characters transferring well to CG, though sometimes certain movements seemed to lack weight behind them-- and no, it wasn't during the comedic moments either. But still, this is a fun adventure I would recommend to Lupin fans, though if you've never seen a Lupin movie before, you're probably better off being introduced to this amazing franchise via CAGLIOSTRO or THE MYSTERY OF MAMO.

Lupin The thiirdd WoW!
EdwardtheBlackPrince11 July 2021
Lupin the third gets the 3-D treatment with Lupin III: the first as we follow Lupin and the gang set out to uncover the secret behind a diary left behind by former archaeologist professor Bresson. Who was killed by the Nazis during World War II. Along the way lupin meets a woman named Luticia who agrees to help lupin in their average define what a diary truly leads to. The film itself takes inspiration from the Indiana Jones movies, it's a quest that leads to a bigger treasure know as the eclipse. The gang has to solve riddles, decipher ancient languages and there's even a part where they do three trials. I won't say that it's ripping it off but more of following a similar formula still unique enough with the characters that it feels like it's own thing. The film also try's to dive more into making the quest more personal to lupin, However it does fall flat a bit there. The villains rather one dimensional their just Nazis looking to revive the third Reich.everything else has the same core of the franchise. The animation has the over the top style chase scenes and action scenes the franchise is know for, Everybody moves so animated their all over the place. All the characters have their quirky personalities from Lupi to Fujiko and Zanigata. The 3-D models look great. While not as photorealistic as the adventures of Tintin it still captures the anime style and the original design of these characters. The environments they look good too except for one scene in the desert we're just feels like it wasn't much effort put into it because it's glossed over pretty quickly. And there's one twist in this movie that you can see a mile away.in short Overall it's a good movie if you're a fan of the franchise it's a recommendation that you check it out for the first debut into 3-D this is still a fun movie.

ENJOYABLE FAMILY FUN
AnirudhGod22 June 2021
A breezy watch that doesn't bore you, but also offers nothing in terms of character development or any meaningful insight into the human condition. Lupin is a character that's capable of solving and tackling every situation, which results in the movie not having much tension or conflict within the character. He's admirable to watch, but difficult to sink into. That's how the movie is too. It is predictable, but none the less, exciting at times. The plot becomes predictable because we notice Lupin ready to solve the impending doom. Characters expect a lot from Lupin, which makes the movie a li'l bit illogical. The animation is gorgeous to look at, but the characters' dubbing is sometimes minutely off and a certain sense of uncanny valley-ness is noticeable in the way they speak. This is strictly a kids' film, as they will enjoy and marvel at the glory of Lupin's quirky and charming persona. I liked it. And also, killer soundtrack, man.

One of the best looking 3D animated films I've seen.
snowhippoz21 October 2020
I had never seen anything related to Lupin III before watching this movie, so this was my first experience with the franchise, and I was very impressed. Above all, the animation and art style of this movie is fantastic. The original character designs are perfectly translated into 3D. The music is also fantastic, providing a great adventure-y feel to the story. The story itself isn't groundbreaking, but it is great for newcomers to Lupin like me. It does a great job in just the first few minutes showing each of the main character's personalities through the beautiful anime opening-style beginning. Overall, I would gladly recommend this movie to anyone looking for a good, fun time, and I can't wait to see what else Lupin III has to offer

Standard kids cartoon
cherold26 January 2021
While Lupin III has starred in a vast number of anime series and movies, I know the series only for its two auteur-driven products, Hayao Miyazaki's fun movie, Castle of Cagliostro, and Sayo Yamamoto's brilliant anime series, The Woman Called Fujiko Mine.

So this was the first Lupin III movie I've seen without a star at the helm. and I suppose it's probably closer to what fans normally expect from the series. Which, if so, is a reason not to watch any more of these.

Not that it's terrible. It's a light-hearted comedy-adventure with thieves and ancient mysteries and Nazis and super-weapons and the like, and that's all to the good. The animation is well done, it all moves reasonably briskly.

But its derivative, the characters are barely explored, the humor is mild, and the whole thing is utterly forgettable.

The director, Takashi Yamazaki, isn't bad; I saw a movie he made a few years ago called The Returner and it was a fun little B picture. But he's no Miyazaki and he doesn't have anything interesting to contribute to the basic series structure.

I probably won't watch another Lupin III product unless it's got a really good pedigree. I wouldn't bother with this one.

50% Lupin, 50% Final Fantasy, 100% entertaining.
phd-inmetal18 October 2020
I grew up watching Lupin and even reading the mangas. I can see how the movie has missed certain beats that makes most quality Lupin outings "Lupin", but honestly I was just hit with a vibe that didn't take me out of enjoying this. It still feels like Lupin, the banter is pretty close and all the cheese and humor is pretty on point too. It's not the best Lupin, but it's definitely not disappointing. Also, that animation is bananas. 👍🏻

Pretty fun
Jeremy_Urquhart25 November 2023
I've seen a couple of Lupin III-related things before, but I was mostly interested in watching this one because it was directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who's helmed the latest Godzilla movie. That's one I'm very excited about seeing next week, so I thought I'd check out something else from the director before then.

Lupin III: The First is an overall pretty fun film. If I had the time and I was even more pretentious than I am, I'd make a video essay about how Indiana Jones 5 ripped this off. I don't even think there's more than a couple of similarities, but the thought crossed my mind at one point and didn't leave.

This Is also much better than Indiana Jones 5, not to mention an hour shorter and it didn't make me miserable either, which is always a plus when it comes to breezy action/adventure movies.

What a return of Arsène Lupin!
KevinYamagata25 September 2020
I really enjoyed watching this movie. The story is well written and well represented. Also the characters are well characterized. I love this new style of 3D animation and i hope there will be more movies like this. I suggest it to all and not only to the fans of the famous thief. KY

Meh...
Truth_Cuts20 December 2020
This was my first time watching anything related to Lupin and I was not impressed. Like others mentioned, the story is nothing new or remotely original. The music was pretty good, probably the best part of the movie.

The movie itself is where the problem lies. The "acting" was pretty terrible. The dialogue was dull. For a animated kids movie, we laughed maybe once.

Will Disney sue ?
kaolin_fu11 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is great. Kids and parents loved it. The visual effects are nice, the music awe-some, and I really enjoyed it. But if you're a fan of Lupin (the original Wolf anime) you may find it a bit off... cause it's really more of an adventure movie. And that's where it gets weird. Clearly the Japanese team thought something like "we're going to release that internationally, with the real name Lupin, for the fist time. We can't mess up with the plot. So let's write a story with all the good stuff from other adventure movies. I can almost imagine the Pitch Meeting series from Ryan Georges, but in Japanese.
  • You know that Indiana Jones movie, the one with the graal ?
  • yeah that's the best one !
  • yeah, let's make that exact movie.

Cause yes, it's the EXACT same plot Not spoiling here, cause it's literally the opening scene, but : Nazis, journal, treasures, 3 trials... I mean some parts are literally rip off.

So for a kid who hasn't seen Indy 3 it's great. For us adults, many eyebrows were raised. I honestly don't know : will Disney sue ? And if they do, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they win.

Great animation, boring plot
HoonGoob16 January 2022
Lupin III: The First is a good introduction for Lupin into the medium of 3D animation that reminds me of The Adventures of Tintin (2010). However it is just an okay movie. The plot is same as your average Lupin III film but just simply doesn't stand out.

Great 3D CG entry for Lupin, with a splash of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
helloamazon26 January 2021
If you are familiar with Lupin's history in Anime, you have most probably seen "The Castle of Cagliostro" (1979). If not, I would watch that highly rated older movie first as an introduction to the characters.

This new Lupin movie from 2019 (released in Japan in late 2019, the Covid epidemic, unfortunately, prevented a wide cinematic release in many countries in 2020) almost rates as high in my opinion; the 3D animation quality, in particular, is fantastic.

The story/plot is somewhat predictable and (especially) the last third shares some parallels with the third Indiana Jones movie. That's not a major issue in my opinion (the third movie was released back in 1989, most movie viewers won't remember details).

It's a fun and fast-paced kids' (especially suited for older kids and teens) movie that adults can enjoy as well.

I would rate it at least 7+/10 and add an extra star for the excellent 3D / CG animation quality, 8+/10 stars in total.

It's OK but nothing special
keithomusic11 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's a typical Lupin plot,at least it starts that way, then it turns into an Indiana Jones movie. That was both unexpected and disappointing. It was faithful to Lupin's movements and attitude. His usual crew accompanied him through most of the movie, but didn't really seem to be a part of it, more like they were there for plot convenience, same as in the anime.

Incidental music is good, but much louder than the dialogue, it's too much of a contrast. The character art is not that good, all the men have the same face, with minor differences, the two women had the same problem.

I watched the Japanese version with English subtitles and the subtitles were kinda bad. A lot of grammar and pronouns were wrong, as were some of the translations. There were more than a few sentences where I went 'what did they just say?', so a bit confusing here and there.

Not a bad movie, lots of action and the characters move like they do in the anime, but nothing really special.

One of my favorite animated films
zackweatherbee11 February 2021
Lupin the third is my favorite animated property of all time. I am ecstatic to say that this film while not very new when it comes to lupin, is absolutely amazing. The visual comedy is on point. The music and animation are the best in the series, hell some of the best in animation. Though it's not all perfect. The villains while they have set motivations they were very redundant if you've watched lupin at all. While I adore Lupin himself, the other took a real back seat in the film. Despite those minor issues this film blew me away in a way only lupin can. I highly recommend it for anyone over 13. There is a fair amount of death and blood. Just a warning for parents. Either way this is a fun action/ comedy and definitely deserves best animated feature of 2020.

Better for Lupin fans: a lot going on but little development(would have been better in 2D)
danarodz22 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie with no previous view of the other Lupin films so perhaps watching them would have given me a different perspective. The movie is not terrible but its not great either. The first 48 minutes were bland, the characters are introduced with little context and back story (for those who haven't seen the movies before.) The animation is very detailed and the settings are stunning however the character movements are stiff and slightly robotic. As another member commented on his review the "acting" is not good. Plotwise there is a lot of good action but there's little character development which makes the movie as shallow as its characters. Not saying the characters are bad, they were interesting but not developed. At the end of the film the only character that changes is the main girl and "grandfather". But Lupin's crew is practically the same. Also, the movie would have been a lot better in 2D. Why? Because the character clearly do "anime style" gestures and "chibi"reactions that do not translate as well in 3D. Overall I don't regret watching it but don't plan on re-watching it soon. The movie has its charm though I just wish more character develpment.

Havily inspired by Indiana Jones but can't match its model
XavierVA12 February 2021
I must confess I was not really familiar with Lupin III before I watched this. I had this vague notion that he was a goofy burglar but that's it.

The film starts strong enough. There is an early escape scene on a highway that is very entertaining. The animation is good and expressive. But as the movie progressed, I realized how much of it was modeled after Indiana Jones. Some of the main characters are archeologists looking for a powerful ancient artifact and, of course, there is a nazi plot to get to it first and restore the Third Reich. That's a problem because comparing Lupin to Indiana doesn't do the former any favor. Neither of them have entirely believable stories of course, but at least there is some plot building in Indiana Jones that doesn't constantly give the impression that the writers came up with all their ideas as they wrote the script, seemingly out of thin air and with little link to what was already committed to paper.

It probably didn't help that I watched the movie dubbed in French, as the voice actors for that version did a poor job, putting more distance between me as a viewer and the characters than the shoddy plot already did.

Overall, there's just enough in Lupin III that I wasn't completely bored, but aside from the above mentioned escape, no scene left a lasting impression.

Way better than I expected
hollandlinder25 April 2022
The animation was amazing! The voices and characters were just like the show! The plot was very tight with very few loopholes. I was expecting something less well done because Lupin isn't an extremely famous anime, but this shattered my expectations. An hour and a half you wont regret spending :)

Inspector Zenigata did nothing wrong!
DanTheMan2150AD14 December 2023
Possibly one of the most lavish uses of CGI animation ever, Lupin III: The First is an absolute visual treat, full of joy and zaniness, a charming and old-fashioned adventure romp. It's an unspooling like a mashing of James Bond and Indiana Jones, but equally reminiscent of The Adventures of TinTin's stylings. The animation has fun playing with the laws of physics, it frees itself from the constraints of anatomy with gorgeous fluidity. Yes, the story may be rather straightforward and its twists are easy to predict, but it doesn't make the movie any less fun as the film manages to pull it off with exceptional speed and scale. Matched by its incredible vocal performances and simply magnificent score by Yuji Ohno, Lupin III: The First balances a hilarious sense of humour with genuinely exhilarating adventure, making it perfect for newcomers and hardcore fans alike.

Disney couldn't even dream of making something this good
NeonWanders17 November 2021
A full-on vibrant treat of a film, LUPIN III: THE FIRST (2019) features animation that will certainly give your HD TV a work out with all the various colours and depth on show. Character designs honour that which has come before in the Lupin the Third timeline while delivering a 3D animated feast that makes me wonder... when's the next one coming out?
