Terry refers to Episode #5.1 (1985) (by year of broadcast and passing of time) as the start of the series. While far from strictly accurate, this is presumably for publicity reasons, as the fifth series marked the show's transition point from a post-watershed weekly show into a primetime, thrice-weekly programme. However, Terry also does the same in Wogan: The Best Of (2015), despite the programme showcasing many clips from the first four years of the show.
The final episode of the series. Terry Wogan returned that same year with a new weekly chat show, Friday Night (1992).
Terry Wogan later stated that he felt should have ended his chat show in the 1980s. In his second autobiography, "Mustn't Grumble" (2006), he wrote: "I didn't listen to my instinct for escape with Wogan, and was persuaded to continue with it for at least two years longer than I should have. You remember they were building that village, Eldorado, in Spain and needed to drag me out until it was finished."
This final episode of Wogan was 22nd on the BBC-only chart, with 7.04 million viewers.
The Radio Times listings magazine also cited the fifth series as the "start" of Wogan, stating that: "After seven years and 1,300 shows Wogan is coming to an end". However, the total number of episodes during this time was only 1084.
