The Christmas Club
studioAT7 January 2021
Of course Hallmark have its standard list of go-to performers for its films, and they're great, but it is equally nice to see someone new pop up in one of them.

Enter Elizabeth Mitchell ('Santa Clause 2-3) here, and what a joy she is, allowing this to be a different sort of Hallmark film.

Ably supported by Hallmark regular Cameron Mathison (allowed to do more than just be an 'action man', as he normally seems to be cast as) this was lovely, with more depth than a standard one of these films.

One of the best festive films I saw in 2020.

Can I join the club please?
adamjohns-4257527 November 2020
Cameron Mathison is adorable in this. The Uncle I aspire to be, the business mind I'd like to have and the gorgeous, loving and kind man I'd like to share my life with.

The female lead is a bit precious and "sweet" in a sickly kind of way, but she's not that bad. Certainly she wouldn't make me turn it off, because I actually really enjoyed this film. After turning off 4 films yesterday, because they were all terrible, it was nice to get back on track with this one.

It's full of Christmassy activities, morals and spirit and the romance is cute.

I think her reaction towards the end is a bit OTT, but they have to do something to cause some drama don't they.

It's a festive film that we could all watch and feel something for, but we definitely need to start seeing Cameron topless, at least, in one of these soon.

Great Chemistry
glanners-708033 January 2021
A woman's Christmas club money is swept away by a sudden gust of wind, and strangers Olivia (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Edward (Cameron Mathison) kindly help in her time of need. She is a ballet teacher and widowed mom, and he is a business consultant who travels a lot, but the 'magic' of Christmas then ensures they continue to meet. Great chemistry amid the usual story curveballs ensures it enjoyable enough to perhaps revisit every other year.

Christmas magic
rebekahrox22 November 2020
This production was blessed by the good acting on the part of Cameron Mathison and Elizabeth Mitchell. They made a good match, and the story was very romantic. A slow development of their relationship with more than a hint of magic provided by the wonderful Gabrielle Rose. Two strangers, both missing true romantic love in their lives, team up to help a little old lady who lost her Christmas Club money. They give her $40.00, and from then on, magic follows them, and brings them together. It was something a little different from the typical cookie cutter offerings from Hallmark. It had some very imaginative and heartwarming plot points. Elizabeth was a little over-sensitive in parts; a little too fragile, but I guess that was her character. They did not drag the misunderstandings out too long. Probably not a re-watch, but I enjoyed it.

Delightful
Gwendlyn00729 December 2019
I prefer action movies but this family movie was a pure delight. Not to cornet or mushy. The characters had so much onscreen chemistry that it reminded me of a time that I had forgotten. I will add this to my watch again and again list!

Playful
Jackbv12328 November 2019
I looked forward to this pairing since I have seen Cameron Mathison do some really good Hallmark movies and there is something about Elizabeth Mitchell in her softer roles.

This movie starts out with a great sequence between the two leads and some playful dialogue after they bump into each other before it launches into the common my-workplace-is-being-sold theme. The urgency is somewhat manufactured in the story, and how it progresses irritates me because the circumstances are so contrived, but it supplies a backdrop as we watch the developing relationship. This is great chemistry! The flirting and playful relationship continues through most of the movie.

While the background premise is a more than familiar theme, there are some interesting sequences. The way they meet is unique. I've never seen a puzzle like the one they briefly worked on about 1/3rd of the way through. The cocoa scene is done with a fresh twist. Meanwhile, there is a really interesting and touching sub-plot resulting from the Gertrude encounter going on also. I didn't enjoy the last third as much as what came before, but it is a Hallmark movie with the expected ending.

So far the only 2019 Hallmark worth a watch
ssc728 November 2019
Love these two together, very real and funny. An honest, not forced romance. Not a totally original story, follows the Hallmark playbook to a tee, but I still liked it. The kids were cute not overacted as well as the supporting actors. One of the few movies that makes you laugh. Going on my next year's Christmas watch list. PS Love Elizabeth Mitchell in everything.

A winner
VetteRanger6 December 2019
We've thought the 2019 crop of Hallmark Christmas movies has been pretty disappointing. This is the third one we like.

We liked Cameron Mathison in "A Christmas to Remember", and he came through again here, with a very similar performance. Elizabeth Mitchell is just as beautiful as we remember her from her Santa Clause roles.

This is a story of two people broken on love, and a chance(?) meeting which brings them together ... again and again and again.

The characters all have chemistry, which is essential for a romance, and the story has believability, despite the "magic lady" who drives the couple's fate.

I'm not sure if this is one we'll want to watch year after year, but we very much enjoyed one viewing.

Good not great!
outdoorsy_gal16 January 2020
It was a good movie, lacked some things but that happens. If you are going to make a movie with snow, please at least don't insult the viewers by the snow not even "landing" on the people, at least make it more realistic. Having it fake thru the screen only is ridiculous. There are snow machines and other technology that could make these winter scenes a lot better! This ridiculousness happens in 90% of these Christmas/Winter movies. A snow machine would definitely help! As for the movie itself, it was "ok". More and more of these movies are becoming too redundant. Expand a little HM and directors around the world!

Wanted to like it more
Becky1457 December 2019
The only thing that saved this movie was Cameron Matthison. His energy and naturalness gave the movie life. I have never seen the main actress before and I just really didn't care for her. She was sort of the opposite and was very low energy. Her character was awful. She whined like a child who does not yet understand life, too much for a 49 yr old lady. She whined that they would have to change the location of the ballet recital and she whined when the guy barely put in a good word for her at the bank which seems ridiculous and there were plenty of other whiny moments in there as well. I noticed in the beginning there was a lot of forced stuttering. I don't know why actors do this. It was annoying. At 12 minutes, I really wanted to stop the movie but I decided I would push through. I'm glad I did because I got to the Christmas club storyline which is something new. The premise of the storyline with the $20 bills was very cute/nice. The storyline of the ballet studio closing and the new one reopening has been done many times. The mother was great and the daughter was cute. I don't know. This movie was just OK and is not one I would record to watch again. If there was nothing else on, I might consider putting it on for background noise but it's definitely not like a few others that I watch every year. Sorry :/

Cute story about paying it forward

These strangers cross paths again again and see the ripple effect of their generosity in their own lives and the lives of others. Very well done and I always love Elizabeth Mitchell!

It could've done with a lot less cheese
r96sk3 December 2020
Too cheesy and drawn out, even if it does bring sweetness by the end.

Elizabeth Mitchell and Cameron Mathison are probably the best thing about 'The Christmas Club', they have a fairly cute dynamic as Olivia and Edward. The support cast aren't noteworthy, though the kid actors do lighten up the film. It could've done with a lot less cheese though, especially early on. I wouldn't class it as good, but it's not bad either.

There's fake snow, and there's fake snow.
linda-plant216 December 2019
Elizabeth Mitchell does not act like a natural mother with her 'daughter', and the shy stuttering with Cameron Mathison soon after the film started was annoying, and I was ready to switch off.

I wish the Hallmark set dressers would NOT use white sheets to give the impression that snow is melting on the pavement (sidewalk ?) , - these films may have been made in a September heatwave but white fabric ???? that the actors almost trip over ? no. In this film there was no snow to be seen beyond the fence of the Christmas market/festival, the roads were clear and cars were moving fast, yet the kids were making snowmen with fake snow.

Sorry, its a miss from me.

Story had potential
leslie_harms13 November 2020
This story had a lot going for it but (and I can't believe I'm going to say this) the lead characters are too old to make it believable. Her husband died 8 years before but her daughter seems younger than that. Mathison is 51 and Mitchell is 50 - they just seem a tad bit too old for me to believe she has an eight year old daughter. Also? The fake snow was way too fake and not a breath to be seen in the cold weather.

Pay it forward
TheLittleSongbird18 May 2021
Cameron Mathison is always worth watching and is a likeable and charming actor in a subtle way, though he can be well above what he is given. Also like Elizabeth Mitchell, she was great in 'Lost' and was absolutely wonderful in the 'Law and Order: Special Victim Unit' episode "Totem". Also liked the concept. Did worry that 'The Christmas Club' would be too formulaic, as a vast majority of them are very more of the same. Also Hallmark's 2019 output has been very up and down, mostly in the in between and down categories.

'The Christmas Club' is one of the bigger hits of Hallmark's 2019 output. A Christmas classic it may not be, but by 2019 Hallmark standards and compared to a lot of Christmas films (Hallmark, Lifetime and elsewhere) it's refreshing. It is also a great representation of both Mathison and Mitchell, more so the former. If anybody was generally underwhelmed by 2019's Hallmark output and has not yet seen this, it will be a relief for them to see a film from this group that is good.

Did feel that the final third was on the contrived side and lost the spark and lustre that the rest of the film had. Most Hallmark films end predictably and patly and 'The Christmas Club' is no exception.

However, there is a lot that is great. The production values still manage to be pleasing. It's not too drab or garish in photography, the editing didn't seem rushed or disorganised and the scenery has a real charm to it. The music is pleasantly nostalgic and is not over-used or constant, the latter of which is the case with a lot of Hallmark Christmas films. The direction is accommodating without going too far in that it becomes pedestrian instead.

Furthermore, the script quality is better than most 2019 Hallmark Christmas films, where a vast majority were either all the way through cheesy and stilted or a case of starting off very ropey and then got better. The script here is playful and heart-warming and the flow isn't awkward. The story is light-hearted and really warms the heart without going into over-saccharine territory.

Characters were easy to get behind and carry the film well, one of the few 2019 Hallmark Christmas films where both lead characters were worth caring for. The support acting is solid, nobody exceptional but there isn't a weak link. The kids are not on the wrong side of cutesy and aren't annoying. Mathison is his usual charming and amiable self and while she is for my tastes a little neurotic at times in the final act Mitchell gives a deeply felt performance. They look lovely together and their chemistry is both playful and sweet.

In summary, very much worth watching. 8/10.

Pretty good movie
centava9929 November 2019
Cameron is always fun to watch, but why isn't he in the cast list? It seems like most of the cast is missing from the list, with only very minor characters included.

Elizabeth Mitchell is very cute, but her character's a bit too neurotic for me. Overall typical Hallmark fare.

I wished I had seen this before!
MIssM1925 April 2020
Originally, this was supposed to be a background movie while I did something else, I yeet that something else out of the window. Good plot, different, while the ending was predictable I did not know what was going to happen before that. I liked that they weren't forced to do something together, instead they went their separante ways several times.

Great leads, (seriously, who doesn't like Cameron?). Familiar, yet not overused. Likeable chemistry. Good secondary cast.

I have nothing bad to say about this. It wasn't THE Christmas movie of the year, but it was a different formula than the one we are used to, so that's satisfactory for me.

These two are perfectly sweet together and with a little help from Mrs. Claus they make an amazing couple.
cgvsluis24 November 2023
This is a sweet romantic story about a widow named Olivia (Elizabeth Mitchell), who like a lot of single moms out there plays it safe by being a dance teacher instead of opening her own studio and doing things her own way. She meets Edward (Cameron Mathison), who's job it is to help small business owners start and grow their own businesses. They meet as good Samaritans who help a sweet older woman named Gertrude (Gabrielle Rose) who looses her Christmas club money, an amount of $80 in twenties. Unable to find her money, they each contribute $40 in twenties without telling Gertrude that it wasn't her actual money.

This starts a very beneficial relationship in which they continue to interact over a series of amazing coincidences...that leave them wondering if Gertrude could actually be Mrs. Claus.

Sweet and wonderful...these two suit each other very well. Elizabeth Mitchell is very soft spoken and Cameron Mathison matched her energy and style with his genuine smile and comfortable line delivery.

I think romantics and fans of Hallmark holiday films will love this room. It's a recommendation from me.

Blugh
dsklodginski1 January 2020
I have slogged thru a few lame Hallmark movies this season but this one was just plain irritating. I wanted to like it because of Elizabeth Mitchell and Cameron Mathison but not only was the story too far fetched even for Hallmark it was way out there. And Elizabeth Mitchell oh my I guess she was so wimpy because she was supposed to be a 'dreamy' dance teacher but she was hard to watch. Give me Jill Wagner any time.

Good Movie for Christmas
GeeJoDeeGee29 November 2019
I had just finished the book and came across this movie! It was a charming book, nice feel good story! (in the book, the story takes place in 1952, with $5 bills lost in the wind!)

Add the charming storyline to Cameron Mathison in a main role, and I was thrilled!

The movie strayed just a bit from the book - different time frame, names, character traits and focused more on the original two characters.

The most awe-inspiring kitchens

Warning: Spoilers
This Hallmark Christmas follows a widow and her daughter as they enjoy the Christmas season before disaster strikes at her dance studio! In comes Edward a dashing but very busy business consultant visiting from the big city! The Winter Festival is A FOOT and a nice little old lady begins meddling in their lives....

A cutesy film that is simple enough and recipe enough for a Christmas film lover to accept. The title is a super weird choice though that threw me off. Perhaps a better title could have been The Christmas Festival? Or Evergreen Park? Maybe, the Holiday Meddler! Maybe Ms. Claus the Christmas Love Helper....

Warning: Spoilers
I love hallmark movies especially the Christmas ones but this wasn't very good.

The male lead is great but the lady's " I need to do this alone" nonsense near the end just spoilt the whole film, really odd way to act when someone cares for you and wants you to succeed.. wish I hadn't started watching it.

This one is so sweet - one of my favorites for the 2019 Holiday Season
ciar2062 December 2019
First - Cameron Mathison is great in this movie. If you loved the Christmas Ornament from 2013 with Cameron and Kellie Martin - I think you'll enjoy this one to, I smiled all the way through (and I was alone watching it!). Kindness and comfort - positive messages in a story and is full of hope and love.
