Episode 3

Well not many people seem to be talking about Us, the serial with the uninspiring title. Apart from the foreign locations it does have much to recommend it.

The good news is that it gets better. An observation I made after my wife binged it all on BBC Iplayer.

I am still on linear television. Episode 3 again cements just why Connie and Douglas marriage has collapsed. The flashback on the annual quiz contest also tells the viewer why son Albi might just be permanently embarrassed by his father.

Douglas is in Venice hoping to find Albi. As he searches for his son, Douglas gets to spend more time with Freja. She is a Scandinavian dentist who has just got divorced. It seems both have some common interests and Douglas reveals that he had a baby daughter who died as an infant.

The foreign locations help this episode. Venice and then on to Barcelona. Actually Us seems to be visiting places that I have been to. It was good that they avoided the picture postcard parts of Venice, opting for the more quieter Arsenal area.

The series has also found its stride, the warmth and humour is coming to the fore. Connie is more relegated to the background, it really is very much Douglas's show who is gauche, makes mistakes, at times arrogant and insensitive even when he tries to be well meaning.

An unexpected twist.

Douglas continues to chase after Albie, his elusive Aon is always one step ahead.

Such a good drama, it's not find in the direction I was expecting it to, there's almost a Clockwise vibe about it, with Douglas maniacally searching, getting into all sorts of trouble.

It's like an onion, with lots and lots of layers, slowly revealed, all of which explain why Douglas and Connie are in the mess they're in, the sorry of Jane is so touching.

Why did this seem to slip by unnoticed, it is just marvellous. Tom Hollander, you are awesome. 9/10.
