- Across the Earth, buildings and parks sit abandoned as everyone has disappeared. Sam and Jack walk through the empty streets, and Dean pulls up in the Impala and greets them. They compare notes, and realize that everyone else is gone. Dean says that Castiel is dead, having sacrificed himself to save Dean from Billie by summoning the Empty. Sam tries to call their friends Jody and gets their voicemail.
Sam and Dean go into an empty bar and figure they're all that are left. Outside, Jack preys to Castiel but gets no response. He goes in to join the brothers, and Sam blames himself for failing to "rewrite" Chuck and eliminate him. Jack says that they can't give up, and Sam wonders what other choice they have.
That night, Sam and Dean drive to a deserted street and wait for Chuck. Chuck appears and Dean tells him that he won, and the brothers tell him that they'll kill each other for Chuck's benefit, once he puts everything back... including Castiel. Sam says that they're surrendering, and Chuck tells that it's too little too late and he's enjoying the new "story " of them on Earth alone because they wouldn't do what he wanted earlier.
The trio return to the bunker, and Jack lies on his bed staring at the ceiling. Sam finds Dean sleeping in the kitchen after drinking, and wakes him up. Meanwhile, Jack sits up and goes to the kitchen. He says that he's sensing a presence of something out there besides them. He admits that he doesn't know why he's feeling it.
The trio follow Jack's senses to a gas station. Dean finds a dog. He names it "Miracle" and shows it to Sam, and suggests that there might also be people who survived Chuck's purge. Dean puts Miracle in the Impala and says that he's the best thing that happened in the last few days. The dog disappears, and Chuck waves to Dean from a nearby field.
As the trio drive back to the bunker, Dean complains that they can't even save a dog. Jack directs them to a church, and says that the presence he's picking on up is in or near the church. They go in and finds the archangel Michael waiting for them. Michael explains that he took refuge in the church when the "rapture" began, and says that he's avoided using any powers that might draw Chuck's attention. He admits that Chuck exterminated Adam, and Dean explains that Chuck left them alive out of a sense of humor.
Michael has been reading through the Bible, and says that he made sure all of the angels and prophets burnished Chuck's images on earth. The archangel asks them what they need him to do. They go to the bunker and Sam shows Michael the Death Book about God. The trio hope that he can read it, but Michael us unable to do so.
Later, Sam asks Dean what they can do .Dean figures that they're screwed, just as Castiel calls and says that he's hurt, and they should let him in. Lucifer is there, posing as Castiel, and teleports in when Dean slams the door in his face. He explains that Empty booted him out of the Empty with instructions to find the Book and use it on Chuck. Lucifer warns that Empty is not happy, and is thrilled that they're a team again. Dean tells him that's not what's happening, and Lucifer points out that Empty called him in because the Winchesters can't handle it.
Lucifer says that he brought a token of good faith, and makes a gagged woman appear. He explains that Betty is a reaper, and Lucifer stabs her with a dagger. Once she dies, Lucifer says that it's the first reaper to die since Billie. Billie comes back to life, and Lucifer introduces Betty as the new Death.
Dean ungags Betty, who head butts him and frees herself. The ring and scythe appear in her hand, and she tells the Winchesters to hand over the Book. They take her to the Book, and she takes it on her own. They join Jack, Michael, and Lucifer in the main room, Michael asks if the Winchesters are thinking of trusting Lucifer, and insists that he did what was the right thing to do. Lucifer points out that Chuck had no love to give for anyone.
Betty arrives with the Book and says that she knows how God ends. She reads from the Book, but Lucifer destroys her and transports the open Book to his hands before she can finish. Lucifer then explains that Chuck left him out of the Empty, and knocks the brothers away when they come after him. He easily avoids Michael's divine bolts, and blasts him back.
Lucifer turns to Jack and asks him whether he's going to join Lucifer and Chuck, or die. As the Winchesters recover, Michael appears behind Lucifer and stabs him with a dagger. Lucifer drops the Book and dies, then disappears. Michael thanks Sam for the blade.
Later in the kitchen, Dean checks on Michael. Michael admits that he's winded, and Dean figures that Chuck is getting desperate because he sent Lucifer instead of coming himself. The archangel says that the Book is useless without Death to read it. Sam has recognized some of the writing as Enochian and is using the Book of the Damned to try and translate it.
Dean, Jack, and Michael go through the lore. Sam joins them and says he was able to piece together the spell to kill Chuck. It has to be done at a precise place, and warns that it will release an unstoppable force that will find Chuck and finish him.
The group drive to the spot and light the spell to cast the spell. White light surges out and then the spell ends. Chuck appears and knocks the Winchesters and Chuck away. Michael greets his father, and Chuck thanks him for the warnings. Chuck says that he couldn't tolerate Michael siding with the Winchesters, and destroys him.
Once Chuck is done, he tells the Winchesters that eternal suffering is kind of eh. He says that he's canceling their show, and Sam punches him. The blow has no effect, and Chuck gestures and drops them to their knees. Rather than snapping his fingers and destroying them, he beats them. They keep coming at him and he keeps beating them down, breaking their bones.
The Winchesters get up again, and Chuck beats them some more. Despite his advice to stay down and give up, they keep getting up and Chuck keeps beating them. The brothers get up again and smile. Chuck wonders why, and Sam tells him that he loses.
Jack recovers and glares at Chuck. Chuck tries to destroy him, but his finger-snapping doesn't work. Jack grabs him by the head and unleashes divine might, and after a minute Chuck collapses to the ground. Jack heals the Winchesters' injuries, and Sam picks up the open book. Dean tells Chuck that they won, and Sam shows him the open Book. The pages are blank, and the Winchesters point out that only Death can read it so they came up with a Plan B.
The brothers faked being able to read the Book because they realized Michael would side with Chuck. Since Jack was a power vacuum, and Jack sucked up the power from Michael and Lucifer when they died. The Winchesters that when Chuck showed up, he released all kinds of power and Jack absorbed it.
Chuck laughs and says that's why the Winchesters are his favorites. He wonders if they kill him, and he can't think of an ending after he loses at the hands of the brothers. Chuck admits that dying at their hands is kind of glorious, and Dean apologizes. The Winchesters and Jack start to walk away, and Dean tells him that he's not a killer. Jack assures Sam that Chuck's power won't come back him, and Dean tells him that it's the ending where Chuck gets old and dies, and he's forgotten. As the trio leaves, Chuck begs them to wait but they ignore him and drive off.
In the nearest city, Jack uses some of his "stolen" God power to return everyone in the world back to life, with no knowledge that they were ever gone. The Winchesters congratulate Jack, and Sam wonders who they call him. Dean doesn't care, and Jack confirms that Amara is with him and they're "in harmony". Jack refuses to go back to the bunker with them to their "home", saying that he's already everywhere. When Sam wonders if Jack is God, Jack says that he'll be around in everything. Dean says that everyone is looking to Jack for answers, and Jack tells the brothers that the answers are within everyone... someday. All they need to know is that Jack is a part of them. Jack assures the brothers that he won't be hands-on, and he won't write himself into the story the way that Chuck did. Jack waves goodbye and walks away, then disappears.
Back at the bunker, Sam and Dean drink beers and talk about how quiet it is. Dean offers a toast to everyone they lost along the way, and Sam notes that they get to write their own story instead of Chuck. Dean figures that they're finally free, and the brothers leave together.
