Simple Snow White animation
nightroses25 July 2018
This isn't in the same league as the Disney Snow White, and if anyone is expecting that, you'll be disappointed. Snow White is a gloomy fairytale, but Disney made it into a beautiful animation. However, this 1990 animation for VHS is shorter and rather silly, with more comic and laughs than seriousness. It's just a bit annoying at times. I felt that the animation was a bit weak, and no effort was given in Snow White whose hairstyle looked exactly like Ariel's but inked in black. Snow White comes across as stupid by opening the door to an old woman who already tried to kill her. The most irritating thing was that mirror.

Worst knockoff ever.

I couldn't stomach on anything this loud and badly made. On my 12th birthday back 25 years ago, I told mom I wanted a VHS copy of Snow White on my birthday, which I meant the glorious 1937 Disney version. At the time, I didn't know the Disney version wasn't scheduled for a VHS release until the following year. When my mom gave me this sorry-excuse-for-a-generic-made knockoff on VHS, I was devastated on the inside. I've viewed it and I was not impressed with it at all. The music was so intense it made my ears bleed. The dialogue was hard for me to hear. Even the animation looked completely sloppy. Many years later in the 2000s, I no longer have it, which I'm glad it's gone.

Take my advice, stick with the Disney classic.

Quite charming

This Snow White is not up there with Golden Films' finest with Thumbelina, Little Mermaid and Pinocchio. However, it is better than their versions of Anastasia and Jungle Book, and is still a charming version regardless. Although the character designs have moments of stiffness, the backgrounds and colours are vibrant enough and smooth, while the music right from the beautiful title song to the use of classical music like the New World Symphony, Peer Gynt, Polotsvian Dances and Ride of the Valkyries is just great(even if I am not the biggest fan of the Dwarfs' song). The story has a lot of charm and is a little more faithful and not as dark as Disney's(if not as timeless), while the writing is simple but not overly so. The characters engage, the dwarfs are adorable and have good personalities, Snow White is both beautiful and likable and while not as subtly chilling as Disney's version the Wicked Queen makes for an effective villainess, with her voice actress sounding as though she's relishing the role. Overall, a charming version. 8/10 Bethany Cox
