The Golden Goose
TheLittleSongbird11 May 2019
May not consider 'The Golden Goose' one of the Brothers Grimm's best or one of my favourites of theirs, there are also more popular, more literary significant and more famous stories of theirs perhaps. Or at least in their version of the story, which is also the most famous. Although quite slight, 'The Golden Goose' is regardless an interesting story and an entertaining one in distinctive Brothers Grimm fashion.

There are not many adaptations of 'The Golden Goose' about or so from my understanding, so 'Grimm Masterpiece Theater's' version, while less than perfect, just about makes do. As far as 'The Golden Goose' goes in terms of how it ranks with the other episodes of the show, it's probably somewhere around low-middle. It is entertaining and pleasant enough, like 'Grimm Masterpiece Theater' in general, and a good way to introduce youngsters to the story if they don't know it already. Although somewhat sugar-coated and at times corny in spirit, it does do a nice job with having all the basic details of the original story (in terms of details it is quite faithful), in the Grimm version here, with its own touches.

Although there are weaker episodes in this regard, am still not crazy about the music and never really have been with 'Grimm Masterpiece Theater' as an overall whole. The opening and ending credit songs are typically charming, but generally it doesn't fit very well and sounds repetitive and very 80s.

Voice acting is inconsistent, other than for Hans, the narrator and Hans' father, all three of which fit perfectly, and to a lesser extent the voice acting of the kindest of the innkeeper sisters, the voice acting tends to not fit the characters and can be rather over the top. The worst offender being for Hans' mother. There is a lack of finesse in some of the character designs, especially at the start, and the synchronisation can be all over the place.

On the other side of the argument, much of the animation was quite nice in its own simple but oddly charming way. It's atmospheric, mostly smooth and expressive and a nice job is done with the attention to detail in the backgrounds. Did like too how the increasing line of stuck people resembled a conga line. The theme songs are pleasant and accompanied by well designed intros/outros.

Writing is easy to understand for younger audiences while having something for people older but wanting some childhood nostalgia. Some of it is hilarious too which one does not expect from this story but it works. The story is entertainingly handled yet is taken seriously enough as well to avoid being completely dumbed down. The narration is not overused and doesn't over-explain, while taking on a nice story-book approach reminiscent of a parent reading their child a story at bedtime. Hans is a likeable protagonist and the titular character is well used and attractively animated.

Concluding, nice episode. 7/10
