Interesting but problematic
Just-A-Girl-148 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The episode was interesting but I have a few problems with it. First, there was way too much focus on the criminals instead of on the victims. The girls were randomly taken from the streets. They were drudged, bound and raped for supposedly what? Therapy?! Who would believe that? Who even said they needed therapy? Who were the guys raping them? How is making them dig their own grave or leaving them naked in the street helpful in any way? And more importantly, why am I supposed to care that the KIDNAPPER didn't know her mother was alive? Why did they feel so bad for her? She ruined the lives of at least three girls (probably more). Second, I have trouble believing that a doctor who is functioning very well (teaching, lecturing, writing books etc) is all of a sudden losing it in an interrogation room. Why would he thinks Amanda is his wife (a woman he hasn't even seen in 15 years)? Lastly, the way they got to them in the first place was not convincing. The Swedish girl, who couldn't even remember her own name, simply lead them to the house (straight to the door actually). It could have been done better. They should have focused on how to catch them. That was the interesting part considering the drugs were legal and the victims were so out of it. The storyline had too many holes in it. The idea was good but the writing not so much.

Interesting but

The ending is disappointing. What happened to the victims? this show sometimes neglect the plot for leftist propaganda. And in this episode they neglected the plot just because.

Weird, But Compelling
jyanes9 December 2019
This episode is one of the weirdest in the show's long history, but seems to be very compelling and peaking the interest of audiences as to what the hell was going on. Adam Arkin has an amazing performance as Dr. Adler, one of the best guest performances in years, and it's always great to see Rollins go undercover!!

My kind of weird

The beginning was one of the best things ever created in the series! Sarah Catherine Hook (Megan Gale) the girl in the first bit was beyond exceptional to me; I absolutely love the psychedelic effects and craziness. Kelli Giddish (Amanda Rollins) is stunning in glasses and Adam Arkin is a heartwarming legend of an actor! Even though this Law and Order: SVU episode wasn't as appreciated as some it's a brilliant one that is definitely compelling.

Good premise, terrible execution
targa926 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this started out interestingly enough, because I wondered how are they going to catch these cultish kidnappers They essentially kidnapped the victim on the street at night, and there's no physical evidence, and the victim (s) is not remembering things clearly at all.

Well, they quickly figured out who they were by a miraculous driving scene where a vic remembers everything, and some footage of a "horseless chariot". But instead of nailing these perps to the wall...

The rest of the movie seemed more about Amanda's getting in touch with her college coed days as a psych student and her worship of this sociopathic cult leader professor (and come on--she really DID inhale--how stupid can that be??), having one of the perps meet her own mother (who cares? she is a KIDNAPPER!) , and is it really credible that a man who held a psychiatric practice for decades and who is a highly-functioning adult, suddenly plays the crazy card during police questioning and gets away with it? I don't think so! These are all side stories that actually sucked up the main plot and conclusion.I didn't get to see any real justice for these poor women...at all! The episode was too much about feeling for the perps! Unbelievable!

Terrible writing and terrible episode.

We Dream of Machine Elves

Warning: Spoilers
This was a "this hits close to home for Rollins" episode and it just did not work. The professor would not be stupid enough to fall into the trap they always do on these shows either.

Many plot holes and inaccuracies
gmanjr-2071918 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I have been watching this show for a couple months on Hulu starting at the beginning and obviously they have no idea how DMT works it even describes it in this website. The entire duration of DMT is 15 minutes certainly not enough time for this story line. Also the fact that they where still awake and able to remember all of the details "in tippy ways" is unrealistic completely as DMT makes you get Knocked out for the duration of its effects. Meaning they where asleep and unable to experience this. Especially at "100" times the normal dose. Very very unrealistic and not even a good story line. Just feels like fear mongering.

What a load of crap

This episode was simply a ploy to poison people into thinking that plant medicine is dangerous. I've loved this show and watched it since the beginning. This was the worst episode I've ever seen.

A fascinating topic squandered by crude misrepresentations
aztheticz6 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I love the premise.

Psychedelics, young adults, sex, the twisted therapist, juicy amount of potential!

Unfortunately towards the end the story turns ridiculous and the portrayal of the doctor is insulting to the real researchers out there doing fantastic work with psychedelic therapy.

As others have said, a doctor of his tenure and accomplishment would not behave in this childish demented way, and conveniently that side only shows later in the episode as "twist".

There was a case of therapist sexual abuse in Canada with MDMA, but they were therapist, not a highly accomplished doctor who was paving the way with groundbreaking studies.

The real doctors out there like Roland Griffiths and Rick Doblin who have done the equivalent research of countless PHDs are inspirational and warm pioneers who have only gotten as far as they have by having the utmost respect and duty of care, a far cry away from the perverted maniac depicted on this show which serves as a contradicted caricature that almost could be out of an anti-drug propaganda video.

Also, DMT was a very poor choice for this scenario as it only lasts 15 minutes when smoked like in the episode and the consumer has total visual disconnection from reality as opposed to hallucinating objects and phenomena within the space of realty. Another unfortunate indication of the lack of research done by the writers, a weird one too considering that LSD would have fit the scenario much more realistically and is far more well known than DMT, were the writers trying to use a lesser known substance to evoke more of a sense of mystery in the average unsuspecting viewer?

Anyway, the topic is obviously fascinating and its fun seeing the hallucinations being depicted and the secretive therapy building hidden in plain sight, lots of potential but flushed down the drain towards the end with the previously lucid and intelligent doctor suddenly regressing into a bizarre, nonsensical, emotionally unstable child. Shame :(

Why does agenerally progressive show demonize drugs?
nadiazayman19 August 2023
SVU generally is sympathetic to victims of abuse, bigotry, or homophobia, but when it comes to any type of consciousness expanding substances it feels like Nancy Reagan wrote the script. This is such a sellout in my opinion. When you combine this with their disdain for any character that questions the efficacy of psychotropic meds you get the feeling the writers are not given creative freedom to dig deeper than the party line. New research is showing that many psych meds are only helpful in the short run, and may be less effective than lifestyle changes such as exercise, proper nutrition, and meditation.
