This episode is credited as being written by Kim Shumway and directed by Ian Samoil, though the closing scene involving Clarke, Octavia, Levitt, and Madi in the M-Cap room was written and directed by series creator Jason Rothenberg. This is because the scene was originally meant to be part of the series finale episode The Last War (2020) (which Rothenberg helmed). With that episode running too long to fit its time slot, the M-Cap scene was moved to the end of this, the second-to-final episode.
The episode's title is a phrase from the poem "Do not go gentle into that good night" by Dylan Thomas, which advocates active resistance to death: "Do not go gentle into that good night / Rage, rage against the dying of the light". In this episode, two characters, Emori and Madi, are approaching death.
