A good show
campbellharper1 June 2020
I'm seeing a lot of very negative reviews here. I can kind of understand where people are coming from. The show has a really loose structure, and the acting sometimes falters a bit. I was pretty skeptical at first myself.

Still, I'm shocked, because overall I really enjoy this show. The thing about it is it's really trying to show us how things are. Sometimes people talk about "representation" like it means sticking non-white, non-straight, non-male characters in where they weren't needed. But in a case like this, representation is clearly just representation, i.e. realism, i.e. trying to portray how things really are.

So unlike a lot of other shows or movies set in NY, this show gives me a clear sense of what it would actually be like to live there. The characters fit into the setting like a hand in a glove. You can understand each character as a part of the overall world. These aren't just disembodied bits of biography.

And I feel like people in general don't get just how hard it is to portray a social milieu. It's a sense of what everyone around you is thinking, how they'll react to things, stuff like that. It's much easier, but less satisfying, to have the characters exist in their own closed-off bubble. This show is so good at represented the overall society the characters live in.

It also conveys the sense of being a freewheeling young person really well. The characters move around the world eager to find something new. They bump into people randomly -- and it doesn't feel like the screenwriters are just pulling strings willy nilly. It's such a fun, breezy feeling, leaving me feeling good after watching the show. And it only works because the world they move through feels so real.

Finally, the skating aspect is cool. I don't know anything about skating, but for this show skating is clearly not just a prop. They want you to like skating as much as the characters do.

Amazing
lafanbe25 August 2020
Watching Betty feels like nothing else I've ever seen on television. I love that this isn't another empty statement about empowerment and defying expectations in a man's world. It just does it and doesn't feel the need to brag about it. And that is exactly what we need today.

Disappointed by the 2nd series
imdb-32-46344218 July 2021
I loved the original film and thought the first season of Betty really did a good job of re-telling the same story, exploiting the extra time well to fill out the characters and detail the tale better.

So I was really looking forward to Season2.

Sorry, I know the general ratings seem to be a little higher but IMV it just didn't gel like the first one. As a skater, who lives in a big city I can say with confidence that S01 exuded the vibe of skaters in a big city, hangin, chillin and most importantly, skating! The pace, the rhythm, the flow, all felt so authentic. S02 though was more about what they were wearing or who they were making out with - even the Mrs, who is not a skater, complained "enough with the snogging, let's have more skating".

In all, the girls in S02 weren't represented as skaters so much as 'chicks who (mostly/maybe) still own skate boards'. The underlying tragedy is that the derogatory connotation of the term 'Betty' which was so neatly and artfully dispelled in S01, was actually affirmed by S02. The irony of using 'Betty' to describe a sick little crew of skater girls is now lost, and in S02 they have become, in the most part, girls who hang around skate spots but don't really skate anywhere much - Betty!

Needed this right now
jonahsschwartz2 May 2020
I was so excited to see something like this was coming out and I'm always floored at how real Crystal Moselle's work with these girls feel. So good and so needed. Really wish you could review a review. It's all a matter of opinion I guess but the people here rating this show a 1, well, this kind of show isn't for you. It was not created for you. Periodt. I never do reviews of anything but these uglies kinda set me off.

Skate Kitchen's Parallel universe
Gaetano-Comparcola2 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Director Crystal Moselle hits another landmark for her amazing ability to tell story through moving picture. Her eye for realism is quickly apparent with every shot. Her shots bring warmth and truth like no other. Although the dialogue may seem to lead nowhere which is almost part of the beauty the story is there. It's a group of girls meeting for the first time and quickly bonding through a shared interest getting into a male dominated skate hole. They start hanging out "chilling" at its simplest. Skaters being skaters in New York City. As they traverse the lively streets getting into vans with people they've just met, some they might know already for an ultra funny smoke session. A great moment with some great laughs. The old man giving out candies...watch out for him! The acting wasn't five stars but it's real. And real is comfortable. Watching this makes you real comfortable. It's almost like your laying on a couch with all your friends in the middle of a New York City skate park with the coolest girls in the city. I expect great things to follow with love, friendship, growth, and skateboarding. "Must watch, binge worthy"

Outstanding, Under Rated Now, But A Future Gem...
lewilewis19979 May 2020
I love that the actors are skaters plucked from the streets, so zero 'trained' acting ability but a naturalness that transcends it. I love the fashion, almost like '80's UK rave (yeah, I'm that old). I love the feminine love angle and the guys that get it, and pity the those that don't. I'm surprised that male skaters are so bigoted, it's the preserve of free thinkers like surfing, or so I thought. But it turns out it's just another bastion of Alpha A-Holes, with a capital A&H. Bummer. Skating is about freedom of expression, not conforming, doing your own thing. The assumption that women can't know their own minds is absurd, they're often the ones that keep men in check and encourage them to be better. Show me a single man that made it on his own? You can't. Apart from Steve Jobs, maybe? And he excelled at getting others to do the work, His right hand man was a woman. So go figure. The soundtrack is also pretty good, a few have made it onto my Spotify. I've only seen two ep's at the mo', but I'm liking it, a lot, memories of gravel rashes, lumps on my head and moments of unconsciousness are coming back, and they make me laugh in a nostalgic, old fart way. More power to you, chaps, I'll keep watching. This is skating.

It's Not Skate Kitchen
sgordon201130 May 2020
I saw Skate Kitchen at Sundance back in 2018. The movie has a lot of slow build, to the point that it almost seems boring. But then suddenly, after all the build up, you get these fantastic shots of the girls just skating and it really captured the essence of these girls. There was pretty minimal narrative in the film, which was intentional, focusing more on the girls and their friendship rather than huge amounts of drama.

That said, I'm not sure it works as well in a narrative format. I see a lot of the reviews listing the main reason they don't like the show is the fact that the acting isn't good. I can't speak for the rest of the cast, but the ones from Skate Kitchen are definitely NOT actors. Moselle literally found the girl playing Camille and a couple of the other girls on the subway and asked if she could follow them around. They're not acting really, and that's the point. At least, that was the point in Skate Kitchen. I feel the narrative aspect of the TV show loses a lot of the improvisational aspects of the girls just hanging out and being themselves.

Essentially I feel like the show loses a lot of the heart that made Skate Kitchen so charming. But it's not a bad show in and of itself.

Effortlessly Catches the NYC youth/skate culture
shonnonlm5 May 2020
I really really enjoyed the pilot. It feels like a slice of life story of the New York City skate culture. Having grown up in NYC, the sense of community shown in the show is accurate and it encompasses the vibrant skate culture of the city. I'm excited to see the potential of where the show will go, having already seen Skate Kitchen, and the cast is fun to watch.

transcendently good
vandwedge26 June 2020
Easily the best tv show I've seen in years. Such a strong tone. Every character has so much personality, even the minor ones. Such deep and varied emotions. So many subtle flourishes. Over and over, you'll notice a quick facial expression that makes you understand the entire scene in a different way. Such a powerful pacing and structure. The combination of everything nearly gave me Stendhal syndrome. Cannot wait for season 2!!

P.S. Apparently some reviewers disagree on this last point, but I would just like to say that I liked this even more than Skate Kitchen. Skate Kitchen was solidly good and quite endearing, but hinted at a potential greater than itself. This show achieves that potential.

Style Over Narrative
KingAssmar16 May 2020
This show is easy on plot and story but oozes style and a very specific Kids/Mid90s greasy, filthy, sweaty, low-budget vibe. It's a show that's right up my alley as a poser who never actually got around to learning how to skate. Unfortunately it appears to be produced by a whole crew of people, so they were obligated to include Nina Moran who plays Kirt. I had to deduct one point for her acting alone, she's awful, her mere presence is hard to ignore in order to enjoy the rest of the show.

What?
markbgill30 June 2021
"Of course it's bad acting", as one 10 star rating put it?? Seriously? That's the dumbest thing I've read. The acting is beyond bad, and makes it impossible to watch.

So refreshing
I never write reviews and when I came onto the IMDB site and saw this was only rated a 6/10 I was shocked. It seems as if the show is like marmite, you either love it or hate it. Luckily I loved it. Such a refreshing programme that is essentially about nothing. But still managed to bring me so much joy. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed watching a programme this much.

Yes some of the acting is questionable but that is part of its charm. I cannot wait for the follow up to this. Definitely going to go back and watch skate kitchen!!

Is it acting or is it real?
bob-larrance26 May 2020
I'm watching the program, loyally, each week. And, I must say, if it's a drama with actors paid to study then perform on a stage, then some simply aren't up to muster. (Some of the acting is just awful.) If it's reality, then I must say it needs sharper editing (please), because some of the scenes reveal those featured in such an unflattering manner as to be cruel. Otherwise, nicely filmed city scenes, sharp camera work and crisp scripts that pretty much remain terse. Too bad about the performances.

I don't know what the other viewers are watching but I loved it and I'm not even into skateboarding!
crybaby-302839 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I never watched skate land or whatever it's called, but one night I was finding something to watch on HBO, and this show Betty was in. I got into immediately and watched the entire series twice. I love Kirt, so I don't know why people think she's a bad actress. She actually cracks me up, she's supposed to be a stoner, carefree, air head with a temper! I actually love the whole cast except janay. She bores me alittle bit, but I love they even put a love story in their. Between Bambi and Camille, when she gets arrested and she realizes the girls backed her up and got her out. Not the guy who she has been hanging out with. He goes hot and cold in her a lot and he is adorable and smart, but he's a little pompous! I also love how they have indigo as a rich girl, but her mother doesn't give her any money and kicks her out. So you see she doesn't have as easy as people might think. Honey bear comes from a good family, but she hides how artistic she is and that she likes girls because she's afraid that her father won't except her! Then Kirt struggles with how men take over the skateboarding industry and girls get looked down on, but they are just as good or even better than the boys. I'm not into skateboarding, or hippies or smoking pot all day. But I just love how all these girls are all different and just trying to survive in a mans skateboarding world and they all have each others back. I love how it's in the city and they all just a couple of girls who met through the skate park and go through so many things together and separately. I'm super picky with my shows and I hate 99.9% shows that are out there, including Ozark! But this show definitely got my attention and I have watched it twice and hope they come out with a season 2. I have only liked big little lies the first season, You, girls, and sex and the city. Tv shows bore the crap out of me, so I pray they come out with season 2. I want to see why Bambi got so cold to Camille, I think it's because she joined the betties. How indigo and her mothers relationship works out after getting kicked out. If honeybear finally becomes herself to her father and stays with Ash. If Kirt, well Kirt is just a free spirited funny girl and I guess if Janay lightens up a bit. But I highly recommend this show, it was so real and I love shows that are real and you feel the characters.

Almost addicted to how bad it is
DPrimaky9424 May 2020
No character development, and I'm throughlt surprised it has a 5.4 I don't mean to single anyone out, cause the acting overall is terrible but the long haired blonde girl in this show ( I can't even name her cause I have no idea) is especially atrocious it makes me sad for people who actually train.

light show with specific vibe.
mariamshehab17 November 2021
Enjoyed: 1. The authenticity of each character, they did not seem like they are even acting.

2. Happy endings and the optimism the show holds. 3. The free spirited vibe. 4.the cinematography and editing.

Did not enjoy: 1.lack of direction, the show was basically aimless, i was confused watching it. 2. Zero to little character development; maybe a few developments but overall it lacks any kind of development.

The first season is colourful and addictive. The second seems complete off
margaridaportfer11 August 2021
It was so promising and refreshing! The first season checks all the boxes: girls bonding and sharing empathy, skate tricks galore, the cool new york city vibe. It was a gen z feast! But the second season got lazy and focused too much on love relationships. When the plot started failing, the dialogues were replaced by very posed video clips of the characters dancing to some eerie (and misplaced) music. The girl-empowering movement from the first episodes was lost. What a disappointment. Nevertheless, I still recommend you to watch it and stick to the first season only.

OF COURSE ITS BAD ACTING!!!
katlemos3136 June 2020
What are you gonna do? Take Ellen page, Dakota fanning and Chloe morentz then teach them how to skate?

Or take a bunch of bad af girls that already have skater attitudes and abilities and teach them how to act? Yeah can't teach that kinda swag to somebody. Idc how many oscars you have.

It can be kinda slow but I enjoyed it because you can see the passion in the skate. The stance. The pure love for it.

Really amazing show
thom-gillespie9 May 2020
You can definitely see HBO is moving in a direction first started with Euphoia, which I thought was good but a bit of a stretch. Betty has more of a Lary Clark Kid's feel but without the we are going to hell in a hand basket ominous feel. There is no driving narrative and it is more Seinfeld slice-of-life with goofy characters on skateboards at the inner city park. It feels real, the actors look their ages and the dialog feels fresh. It is funny watching it during The Virus because it show what we all want to do: wander around with friends, bumping into friends, just goofing off and feeling alive.

Good
coles_notes7 June 2022
Slice of life series, a group of girl skateboarders ride throughout the boroughs of NYC. Very cool show, esp if you like street skating or the skateboarding lifestyle / aesthetic. I really enjoyed the show, the second season is being produced during covid, so the episodes really reflect that. It'll be interesting in years to see all the seasons where characters suddenly start wearing masks and we'll know it was filmed during covid. Good show though.
