Green Acres Redeux

Interesting but short lived re-imagination of the "Green Acres" formula, only this time with Tom Lester (who played Eb on "Green Acres") in the Mr. Douglas part and Charo in the wacky, zany foreign wife part. If this show had been done five or six years earlier, it might have been given a longer run. But by this time, CBS and the other networks had dumped the zany belly laugh kind of comedies like "Beverly Hillbillies", "Green Acres", "Red Skelton" and other popular shows in favor of more urban and edgy fare along the lines of "All in the Family" and "Maude". While funny, this show did not fit in with those type of comedies and it was too unsophisticated to fit in with the MTM type of shows like "Mary Tyler Moore" or "Bob Newhart" and quickly disappeared.

Warning: Spoilers
I remember this. Mom loved anything that had Charo in it. She thought she was hilarious. Tom Lester seemed a little out of his league tho, as tho she was just taking off and leaving him in the dust. Charo was much more hyped up than Eva Gabor was (another one mom liked).

I do remember the jokes tho. Every time someone saw Charo, usually a guy, he would go, "that's your wife? She's . . . she's . . . . " And Tom would blandly finish up for them, "Spanish." Another very funny bit was Charo fixing dinner as she sang.

"I want to be loved by ju, by ju, and nobo-dee elz bud ju. I want to be kissed by ju, a-low-oh-ohn, boop-boop-ee-BOO!" and of course on that last bit, Charo thrust her pelvic forward. It was truly funny to see.

It was all going to be Charo's show. Strange how she never was offered another program, other than appearances on Love Boat and Chico & The Man.
