BETTER explores the complex relationship between young mum Jamie and her son Max. Max is an effeminate child and shows early signs of questioning his gender identity. He is extensively bullied at school and as the bullying reaches a peak, Jamie fears for her sons future. Through her over-familiar neighbour, Jamie is introduced to a new private medical facility called Refine. Refine offers a new procedure that claims to 'fix' personalities and therefore can heteronormalise Max. Jamie is faced with an almost impossible personal and ethical decision. Should she 'fix' her son in order to protect him, or should she continue to encourage him to follow his natural inclinations and accept a more trying and difficult future?
