Another fun birthday special
Horst_In_Translation29 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is "Herr Schmidt wird 50, will aber nicht feiern" and it means in English "Mr. Schmidt has his 50th birthday, but does not want to party". Or you could also say "celebrate" for the last word there. "Feiern" means both in German. This is from 2007 and boy how much times has passed since then. I was still in my early 20s. How time flies really! Anyway, I have liked Harald Schmidt for a long, long time really. For decades, not gonna lie, so I thought it was a good idea to watch this special today on my own birthday. I was not disappointed. By the way, unless you are totally useless in mathematics, you will recognize that Schmidt is 63 now, so he has had his 60th birthday now already a few years ago, but apparently he was not in the mood to celebrate once again and there was not a show like this. But the way this one here looked kinda fit the title because Schmidt was all over it, but it was just snippets from other shows he was on. That's what I think at least. One thing featured heavily is an interview in which Schmidt talks about very personal stuff too. I will not elaborate on that in detail now. Watch it if you care. Sadly, the interviewer also died relatively quickly after 2007. But at least Schmidt is still with us. He is called Dirty Harry here in Germany, but I think the new generation, the very young people now, are forgetting about him already because he has not been too active lately. I find it a pity. If his late night show was still on, I would watch almost every night I'm sure. Loved the man and his approach to comedy so much. It's sad to see the likes of untalented folks such as Joko and Klaas, Böhmermann etc. in his footsteps and they are now considered the most successful. Pathetic really. But it is similar the way it is in America if you are from there. I think Noah and his buddies, even Kimmel and Fallon are really unwatchable at times to be honest. These are the equivalents of the ones I just mentioned. Schmidt always reminds/reminded me a bit of Letterman, also in terms of style and they both had big beards at one point, Schmidt even when he was still hosting. So yeah, he was not yet away from his shows back in 2007 the way he is now when he is doing nothing but Traumschiff. Honestly, the series is unwatchable in terms of acting and stories, but Schmidt's inclusion there even makes me curious about those. I just wish these episodes were shorter than 1.5 hours. Oh well, what I actually wanted to say is that the people you see in here giving little tributes to Schmidt are mostly fellas from the same generation. Like Jürgen von der Lippe's speech early on was really good. Biolek is always kinda cool, especially when he is apparently conducting an orchestra. Also really old now in 2020, wishing him health. And Helge Schneider is always fun of course, even if he had been funnier on other occasions too. Another really gifted comedian with his very own style. Can't wait to see him next year llive hopefully if corona allows it.

As for the clips and snippets, we have many famous faes there. Kerner is included and actually seeing that Schmidt did not like him at all was so nice because I think Kerner is absolutely unwatchable. The little Raab segment was nice. Schlingensief as well, may he rest in peace. Willemsen also did not get too old unfortunately and seeing the young Hugo Egon Balder was interesting too. Oh man, they could never get away with jokes like his to be honest. Which is actually pretty sad. Okay, the clip about Böttinger was honestly not too nice, but I guess nobody's perfect and he received a lot of backlash for it, so he paid his dues I suppose. Okay, what else? Man I miss Harry, wish he could come back, but oh well, probably politically correct snowflakes would really oppose him hard and probably the concept that made him famous would not work anymore today. Hasn't really during his last attempts either if you take a look at the ratings and how quickly it got cancelled or how he forced to change crucial aspects. Don't even get me started on when he hosted the show together with Pocher. No words on that. An embarrassent really. But this was later than 2007 I think, so luckily no Pocher in this show. Andrack was the real deal 100%. And add to that Mme Nathalie, Suzana and Helmut of course leading the band. Sigh. Good old times. And I say that despite what it makes me sound like! Also nice to hear Schmidt is a bit on the conservative side. Also I see that his mother was pretty young when he was born, early 20s or so, and she may still be alive today. His dad isn't though and he reached a really high age of over 90 when he died in 2010, which means he was 20 years older than his wife. Quite a gap. Also funny how Schmidt was so grey-haired back then already. Raab also jokes about it. It's also tough to believe that Feuerstein is really 20 years older than Schmidt. Or was. sadly, he is not with us anymore, but he had his 70th birthday that year and they (Schmidt and Feuerstein) celebrated the occasion back then on the River Rhine. Another birthday special that came out almost at the exact same time back then in 2007 and that one, even if the concept is entirely different in terms of the execution, deserves to be seen. Must be seen in fact if you like Schmidt (and Feuerstein) as much as I do. The man in charge of both specials was Klaus Michael Heinz by the way. It seems he was even more in charge of this one here. At minimally under 1.5 hours, it is also 15 minutes longer than the one on Feuerstein. Okay, I know I just did some brainstorming about all this really and did not speak too much in detail about the actual outcome here, just on some occasions. Forgive me for that. The one thing I am really entirely sure about here is that this one gets a really high rating from me and I am totally glad I checked it out. I think you should do the same. What you see here is real class and these times probably won't come back. At least not anytime soon. But luckily, we have old recordings. Doubtful this will be on television anytime soon again, well maybe for Schmidt's 70th birthday or so, but it is on Youtube and Dailymotion has it as well I think, so going there would be the easy way to pick up on it. I normally prefer television considerably, but as I said chances are minimal you get to watch it there, so use other measures. For me, this is a really big thumbs-up. Highly recommended and probably one of the best show events / documentaries from 2007. A pretty nice tribute for sure. Of course, I am very biased when it comes to Schmidt, but hey don't blame me. The man is a legend! May he live log and stay healthy and maybe return one day again with a show. I mean he probably has 20 years ahead of him and if we are looking at Gottschalk, that one apparently can't let go either, so who knows, maybe there is help. Anyway, Gottschalk is also one of Schmidt's icons as we find out here. Did not know that, even if the biggest icon may be Rudi Carrell in terms of who inspired Schmidt the most in his early years. Okay, that is really all now. Go watch this, what are you waiting for!? You may be finished before they find Manuel eventually, especially if his shower takes a little longer tonight.
