Realistic-esque rom-com
Floated218 March 2022
Having no knowledge of this film and not having watched any trailers prior to watching, expectations were very little. As a result, the film was better than expected. It has an independent feel and a very realistic type of film where situations the characters were put in, are familiar and occur in real life. The acting was passable for and better than expected. Overall a solid lesser known film.

The little indie film that can
Ramascreen25 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
-- Rama's SCREEN--

KNUCKLE DRAGGERS is an in-your-face comedy about relationship that aims to give you just the right dosage of assumptions and entertainment. It's fun, clever, witty and well-acted. Granted, the story sounds familiar but for this particular theme and genre,… an indie movie doesn't get any better than this. Writer/director Alex Ranarivelo gives you Man Vs. Woman, through all kinds of mindset and stereotype that have been used since the dawn of man.

KNUCKLE DRAGGERS is in the same spirit as Jon Favreau's classic movie Swingers. Both movies have a character who thinks he's got it all figured out, the Vince Vaughn in this one is Kyle played with such wisecrackin' cocky attitude by Paul Alessi, his brother Ethan played by Ross McCall is the one who can't seem to recuperate from a break up and find it hard to to even rebound.

Yeah you've seen probably a thousand movies where the guy would tell a bunch of old school rules in the most rude way possible, it's like there's a ten commandment tablet that he'd share with everyone even when they don't ask for it. In this case, Kyle comes off so opinionated about it because it serves as his defense mechanism to cover up the pain of the recent heartbreak he went through. In a way, the movie wants to show that it's okay to feel hurt instead of simply using something to shield it but at the same time, it's not a good thing to linger too long because there's nothing attractive about a man who's obviously still stuck in the past.

The question of whether we've evolved or still think we're programmed a certain way runs through the frames of the story, the themes keep reminding us that we do have a choice to not follow the pattern. Great ensemble cast too that includes supporting actors who are right for their roles. Although it centers on the two brothers, the stories of each of the other couples would help out in determining which decision Ethan's going to make regarding his love life. And vice versa, the brothers' constant ranting about how to treat a woman and what to do when in a relationship with a woman somewhat impacts and redefines how their friends see their own relationship and the values that are supposed to come with it, like trust, communication, confidence, and simply just being yourself without putting on an unnecessary show.

Sure the concept's been done before and we've seen other versions but what I like about KNUCKLE DRAGGERS is that writer/director Alex Ranarivelo proves that a story can still be done well without having to be too lavish about it. The humor is perfect, the drama aspect isn't overdone, the storyline's well structured, decent dialogue that's not cheesy, with situations that we can easily relate to. For some reason, I get the impression that he's suggesting that it's good to be in moderation. You can be vulnerable but not too much that you lock yourself in, you can be confident but no too much that you'd push others away.

It also emphasizes another important point.. that the only way to heal is to live your own life, live for yourself for a while… because if you focus on getting what you want and pursuing that dream that you've always had in mind and do well on it, others will bound to notice. In this case, Kyle, despite his shortcomings is always supportive of his brother and comes to the conclusion that Ethan needs to get back on track of becoming a director and once Ethan shows his negotiation skills and does a damn good job at a commercial gig, a female colleague takes notice. What a woman expects from a man can be in confrontation with what a man expects from his woman but it doesn't necessarily have to stay a conflict all the time. Relationship is never an easy thing, that's why it takes 2 to play that game.

Predictable and boring!!!
raven-6826814 September 2019
A complete waste of time watching this movie. Besides being very predictable, it drags on and on to a lack luster ending where you could care less about any on the characters. Obviously a low budget student film.

Knuckle Draggers - A relationship roller coaster ride ...
wendyshepherd26 May 2009
Knuckle Draggers is the perfect film to watch with a group of people. The ensemble cast presents a range of characters where a connection can be made with one or more of the situations presented. The story is a relationship roller coaster ride with funny highs and dramatic lows.

The opening credits begin with a series of neat caveman drawings with music that set the tone of the story. You'll feel like a voyeur peeking into each character's scenario. Starting with Kyle (Paul J Alessi) who is able to take control of a bar scene injustice that many guys wish they could do in real life. Next is the view of Kyle's brother, Ethan (Ross McCall), who has problems with his fiancé and ends up being dumped. As Ethan struggles to find out what he can do to get back together with his ex-fiancé, his brother Kyle solicits advice to help him get over her and move forward with a chance at a better relationship with someone new. Things don't work as planned and Ethan's friend, Patricia (Amie Barsky) submits advice of her own, which conflicts with Kyle's guidance causing friction between them. A telling scene of this can be found when the three of them are at Ethan's home getting him ready for a date and there is a showdown with a comparison of films representing the views of men and women.

Just as the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child" pertains to parenting; people may need help with relationship problems from many people: family and friends. This is the case with this film, where different characters of the ensemble cast are in different stages from being single, married, or divorced. No matter what stage, there are problems that pop up, and the main key ingredients that seem to help solve issues, are communication and confidence.

I watched this movie with a group of family members that ranged in age and everyone simply loved it... each mentioned different funny things that stuck out as memorable scenes. This is a film geared towards guys and girls alike who can determine for themselves whether we have evolved from caveman times.

An awesome cast made this movie happen, and you can feel the chemistry between them that makes this story work. I've seen some of the excellent film work by Ross McCall, Paul J. Alessi, and Amie Barsky in the past. I haven't seen the other cast (Omar Gooding, Justin Baldoni, Danielle Nicolet, Brandon Olive, Serah D'Laine, or Jennifer Alden) before this, but I loved the job they did making their characters believable and I'll watch for their future projects. I'm also looking forward to more films by Knuckle Dragger's writer, director Alex Ranarivelo.

Funny and Entertaining!

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is about brothers, Ethan and Kyle, who approach love and women in two very different ways. Ethan is overly polite, while Kyle is the complete opposite. As Ethan dips his toes back into the dating waters after a recent breakup, Kyle attempts to coach him according to the "Neanderthal" rules that he follows. In the end, Ethan finally finds his voice and Kyle's rough exterior begins to soften. Definitely worth the watch!!

Absolutely hysterical and down to earth at the same time.

Love the plot. Very down to earth, very realistic and with a wonderfully hilarious story. The cast is superb and the chemistry between Paul J. Alessi and Aimee Barsky and Ross McCall make this movie even better. Definitely a must watch film.

I'm normally not one to review films
tullioj23 August 2020
I'm normally not one to review films, although when I watched this one I felt it deserved it and I also absolutely recommend it.

It's not a star-studded Hollywood film, and quite frankly I preferred it. I thought that the actors were excellent, totally relatable, and believable. Some of the connections and chemistry between the actors had me drawn in and I was emotionally attached. There are truly a few standout gems among this cast that I hope to see a lot more from.

Surprisingly sneaking in the funny from both Kyle, and Russell played by Paul J. Alessi and Omar Gooding had me laughing out loud multiple times.

I would of like to have seen more of Jenna, played by Katrina Law, who also played Nyssa al Ghul from "Arrow".

Amazingly honest movie that is well worth watching
crash_jade1313 February 2013
I just got to see this movie last night after pre-ordering it and absolutely love it.

It's very much not a typical romantic comedy which is probably why I like it so much. It states some things bluntly that most people will not want to admit are true, yet we all know they are.

All the cast did a great job; Ross McCall and Paul Alessi were very convincing as brothers with the outwardly macho attitude with each other, but there's the little things they each do that shows their brotherly love.

I also loved Danielle Nicolet and Omar Gooding. Their portrayal of a married couple going through a rocky bit was so well done that I was actually talking to the screen hoping they'd hear me and stop fighting.

Paul did an amazing job as the older brother coaching his younger brother on how to 'properly date women'. His character, Kyle, was definitely the stand out and my favorite; with Amie Barsky's character of Patricia a close second because of her strength and great way of speaking her mind.

This is one of the most honest and real romantic comedies that I've seen and I only have a few in my collection. I'm proud to say this has passed the test and I'm so glad this finally became available.

If you liked Swingers, you're going to enjoy Alpha Males Experiment
sujpatel230 April 2013
Alpha Males Experiment is a unique romantic comedy that approaches things from the male point-of-view.

The story follows Ethan, an aspiring director who gets dumped by his hot fiancée because he couldn't provide her with the plush, stable life that her sorority friends were living. Desperate to get her back, he seeks help from his misogynist older brother Kyle, who gives Ethan a crash course on women and dating.

Disgusted by his brother's harsh views on how to treat women, Ethan ignores his advice and ventures out into the dating world, but he slowly realizes that everything Kyle says seems to be true.

Alpha Males Experiment is a mixture of Jon Favreau's Swingers, Edward Burns' The Brothers McMullen, and VH1′s The Pickup Artist. The result is a thought provoking movie that examines what modern couples want versus what they need, and how their needs haven't evolved much from those of our caveman ancestors.

I really enjoyed Alpha Males Experiment, and I highly recommend checking this movie out!

A Hearty Alpha-Male Applause!
juante197610 November 2019
Very enjoyable film that gets it right in it's depiction of two brothers who at face value seem the polar opposites, but who ultimately want the same thing, (love/respect/career), and would do whatever it takes for each other. All of the players, Paul Alessi and Ross McCall, in particular, shine as brothers with bookended personalities. See it if you haven't!

A fun movie that has a very authentic take on relationships
zottachelsea25 March 2019
This film displays several different dynamics: friendships between guys, friendships between girls and guys, brotherly love and romantic relationships. Each of these relationships are portrayed very honestly and bluntly, but in a fun and amusing way.

Paul Alessi (as Kyle) and Ross McCall (as Ethan) have great chemistry as brothers. Kyle makes it his job to teach Ethan how to be a stronger, more confident, well-respected man in his personal life, which also transfers over to his professional life as budding film director. Kyle's strategy is tough love, but a lot of what he says makes sense and is even backed by a scientific study!

If you want to see an original and unique take on a romantic comedy, I highly recommend watching this!

I could see myself in many of those scenes and I could feel the actors were really well-connected. Good moral lessons to get out of this as well and it shows how complicated life can be.

Awesome Movie 💜💜
pitbullmom-764058 December 2019
Paul J Alessi and Ross McCall have great on screen chemistry. The movie touches on so many things in regards to how we all perceive relationships. The differences between how men and women think and react to each aspect of every day life. Everyone in this movie are fantastic. You really can relate to everyone's characters. Funny and witty ..not your everyday romantic comedy, its fresh and i believe definitely more realistic. Watch with your significant other or with a group.. Youll absolutely love this film

A Socioanthropological Romp
GhiaTruesdale4 June 2021
Date Night Movies are few. Alpha Males Experiment is a delightfully informative socioanthropological romp that explains 'what-the-heck IS the difference between men and women?' And informs --from an Alpha-Male's perspective-- what's to be done to ensure eternal domestic bliss. Its Producer, Paul J. Alessi, also stars in it. Alessi delivers a performance that enrages then endears. Is there global distribution of Alpha Males Experiment? There should be. Every culture on the planet will relate and learn from this gem. A perfect DATE NIGHT FLICK!!
