Some people may have missed the whole point
avgalia26 September 2020
I usually check the rating before I decide to watch a movie. In this case the movie was recommended to me by a person I trust and thanks God I decided to watch it despite the rating that some people gave to it. I am glad I did. This is an excellent movie and I can understand some people may have not liked it. I presume those people do not have the slightest idea how a movie that is labelled as "crime" do not have any shooting and still be good. The problem is that it is not a movie about crime, it is a movie about social and cultural differences of people living in the same country.

If you expect to watch action do not waste your time, it is not a movie for you. The plot is heart breaking, the acting is exceptional and the filming is very sober. There are some aspects that are difficult to grasp if you have not lived in a place where Justice is over-ridden by money.

really excellent drama
ops-5253524 August 2020
If you love drama flicks, where social diversyties and where there are opportunities and opportunists, where the hearts are open for everyone, and that cruelties should be sorted out in a decent and fairplayed way, then this might be for you.

its argentinian, i guess its the 4th film from that country that i watch, and it shows a social realism that really understates the poverty and striving among common people, the corruptiveness that even the rich have to bail in with are just gobsmacking. its a comprehensive look into the judicial system and gives you a hint how important religion are in argentina.

its a near perfect production, a bit springing in the start, but when you find the ead youre trolled into the trials of inhumanity.

its a good sopanish spoken human drama with peculiar and strange human interaction, a film the grumpy old man thinks you should see, but be patient, it may feel slow in the start but hang on.

The ties that bind.
ulicknormanowen22 April 2021
This could have been a classic melodrama straight out of the ark :it is not ,the treatment is not derivative and although one may guess the ending before the final revelation , the construction of the movie is rather subtle ,using two distinct plots with two accused persons (a man and a woman) :it's thirty minutes before both stories are linked with Ignacio 's testimony in Gladys affair and one learns that he and his wife are concerned by both .In these trials , for once, they do not show the brilliant lawyers but leaves the lion's share to the accused ,both well acted :butter would not melt in Daniel 's mouth and Gladys seems out of this world .What the bourgeois mother (excellent Cecilia Roth) plots with the shady lawyer backfires on her .

Based on a true story , it avoids tear-jerker tricks ,much to the credit to this Argentine movie.

No big thrill but good story
i_lalindra8 July 2021
I would say this is a plain story. At the beginning it gives you bit of thrill but middle of the story all revealing.

Protogonist actress, Cecilia Roth Giving hell of a acting here and exceptional. All credits goes to her. She is giving emotional facts which bind with son finally bind with crime.

Movie teaches life, crime, judgement and emotional decisions specifically inside families.

Very nicely portrayed and well crafted screen play. Recommend it.

A bit too slow in an otherwise great film
giorgosstefanidis29 August 2020
This movie is based on real events and that makes the film more sad . The problem with this film is the pacing in my opinion . It too slow and sometimes boring . After the 3/4 of the film it gets faster and the tension increases . This movie is heartbreaking and it just's ... it's really WOW . The acting is amazing every single actor nails the role . If it wasn't that slow this movie could be a masterpiece??

Empathy
jordymadueno24 September 2020
I knew what was going to happen, however, I didn't want to believe it because of such disturbing thought and that's precisely the point because that's how Alicia (Cecilia Roth) reflected feeling. I must say that Alicia reaches a satisfying climax that surprised me.

Excellent and definitely underrated
rcanobiassi31 January 2021
Please watch this movie. It is as realistic as it can be. I am Argentinian and work in the court system and the reality of the characters, settings and social differences are outstandingly portrayed. The acting is great, from the main characters to the extras. It makes you feel like you are seeing reality through a window. The plot is beyond interesting and so real it actually hurts. This is (sadly) what happens in the real world. Just PERFECTLY DONE.

Pamphlet but entertaining
paopinardos28 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is an entertaining movie, unfortunately, with a political agenda that falls into the pamphlet. It is unlikely that a well-off woman who has spent her life protecting a useless, drug-addicted son would take in one minute the side of her maid without demanding proof of such a rape. A DNA test would have been the most evident proof to require before changing her mind. It is also unrealistic that the thousands of infanticidal cases in Argentina are resolved in the nation's main courthouse as if it were the supreme court, with too much staging as the movie goes. A more humble courtroom would have been far more realistic. Roth's acting delivers exceptionally as usual (sadly, her face lifting spoiled her gesture), but Sofia Gala's over-acting does not add much to this movie. Nor does the little credible script help to make characters more credible. Despite all these flaws, the film delivers and entertains. Funded by UN Women, it should not surprise that a pamphlet agenda prevents the more complex story that never was.

Heartbreaking
faer_kr20 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
An Argentine drama based on real events. It is about two trials, the first of a domestic worker who kills her child at birth, the second of an unfulfilled leave of absence, both stories have to do with the same woman. Entertaining Quality. How far would you be able to defend your son even if you are in error? Although some moments you already intuit in the development of the film, they fall like cold water when they are revealed. He talks a lot about violence against women, sexual harassment and abuse, injustices and the love that blinds a mother when defending her son. The confessions of the court give you elements to create your own conclusions on moral issues. The main character that is the mother is the one who takes the film and although at times you do not feel empathy for her, you stay to see her until the end. The script is extraordinary and successful. An Argentine film that really achieves what it wants to convey. Safety pin.

Searching for a Moral Compass
lavatch20 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"The Crimes That Bind" is a film that recalls the so-called problem plays of Henrik Ibsen in the late-nineteenth century. The "problem" was a social issue explored by the playwright, particularly in the context of the family.

Two strands are woven through the film about crimes committed within a single family. The two middle-aged parents, Alicia and Ignacio, are struggling to cope with a son, who claims to be the victim of a conniving wife who has separated him from his young son. The film cautiously unfolds the truth about the son.

The parallel narrative strand is the family's live-in maid, Gladys Perreira, who has given birth out of wedlock while in residence. For all intents and purposes, the child named Santino ("Sonny") is being raised by Alicia. Then, tragedy strikes when Gladys becomes pregnant again and commits infanticide.

The tie that binds the two stories is the discovery of the moral compass of Alicia. Her instincts are to do what is in the best interest of her son Daniel. But the untoward discoveries she makes challenges her to rethink her entire worldview.

It was disappointing that the filmmakers did not fully resolve the situation of Gladys, one of the saddest figures evoked in the recent cinema. But the film's essential "problem" was satisfactorily resolved. In a world where people were clamoring to be victims, Alicia was a character who rose above the crowd and made difficult human choices based on strong ethical values.

Surprisingly good Argentinian film. Careful not to read any spoilers!!
LiveLoveLead3 June 2021
This Netflix film is a dubbed Argentine film, inspired by a true story. A slow burn drama/mystery that is best to watch without knowing anything. The acting is well done by most, and I read that it's pretty authentic for that country. The film is basically two stories in one with a rich couple at the center. Alicia and Ignacio are dealing with their troubled son who is on trial and a relationship with their "simple minded" maid and her adorable 3-year-old son. Slow paced but very intentional on how it unwinds, going back and forth in time to gradually reveal what transpired in this family. Even if you guess the outcome, or think you have, the film will pull you along to see how it unfolds. This movie is both heartbreaking and heartwarming as you witness the character development, trauma, and humanity of this family. If you go in knowing this isn't a fast-paced, vibrant, Hollywood thriller, you'll be able to enjoy this gradual crime drama, IMHO!

Really touching
profesorsaravi21 August 2020
My wife and I watched this movie without great expectation. However, we were really surprised by the plot, from the start until the last stunning revelation. As Argentinians, we found all the set up quite realistic. All actors are very good and their performances were remarkably adequate. The story may be small, but this is a great movie. Actually, the best Argentine movie of the few last years, in our opinion.

Oscar worthy
chattopadhyaysabyasachi621 August 2020
It is a kind of movie which after watching, you will have a good feeling. Story , acting of Cecelia Roth and rest of the actors and magnificent direction of Sebastian schindel are the key factors of this Oscar worthy movie . I shall be surprised if it doesn't get nominated for the best foreign film and the beat picture categories for this year .

Reality hits hard after this movie
sofimohr2 September 2020
Packed with cold, face-slapping true facts regarding the life of poor, undereducated women that are treated like less entitled to basic rights, alone and non important, this drama is determined to make us face reality in many different levels. This movie is slow but promising, and it delivers a strong, important message.

Yanina Ávila, the actress behind the role of Gladys shares in fact several qualities with the woman she portrays: she was born in a low-resource family, hasn't finished primary level studies and is actually a single mom to the same boy she mothers in the film (Santiago). She also cleans as a profession and was casted for her first role a few years ago, this being her second acting job. She has been underpaid for this Netflix production, as divulged in the Argentine media, and is still living in Misiones while working her cleaning job, hoping to get more acting roles in the future to improve her financial situation.

Let's bring light to the unfair and ironic situation of contributing to a poor woman's rights deprivation while making money with a movie depicting this exact same injustice.

Stupendous film...
RosanaBotafogo23 August 2020
Pearl of Argentine cinema, a fantastic playwright, very well conducted, to intrigue us and that plot twist, and the saddest, which is based on real facts, in fact, of two crimes that were unrelated, but generated an excellent very well produced work, highlighting Cecília and Yanina Ávila (who is a domestic worker and of humble origin), a beautiful, dramatic, sensitive, critical, stupendous film ...

MANY IN THE WORLD IS LIKE THE VICTIM
yonghanntan17 July 2021
Very heart rendering movie from Argentina, in Spanish. Solid acting. What does a woman do when she discover she's with child, and will be thrown out of her dwelling into homelessness & penniless? And no family to fall back? All evidences stacked against her. Her savior soon turned accuser, her earlier kindness now seem self serving.

The story unfolded like a multi bulbed onion, layer by layer, in parallel.

What would you have done if you were the victim, or the accuser? The audience & the court will believe everyone's testimony - except the victim's. How would you save the victim?

Really amazing movie and what is more amazing that it was brought by NETFLIX. Nice plot, very relatable with real life events, how moms always helps their childs and sometimes they become blind for everything else. It's in my top10 of 2020 movies so far. Really recommended.
