Great acting and good plot, fantastic movie
gunneman-11 February 2008
I love this movie! The acting is great and the plot is very good. Theo Maassen plays a strong main character which draws you in. You begin to like him, but he plays is very subtle and you feel his edges from the beginning. It's a guy you're not sure if you can trust him or not. Was he wrongfully convicted or is he the beast that others perceive him to be. It gives the movie a strong foundation and he maintains a great performance throughout. A couple of others in the theater weren't able to totally separate his movie character from his career as a comic, resulting in some laughs in the audience in some strange places in the movie. Nothing to blame on Maassen though, he did great. The girl in this movie is brilliant. It's the first role of Lisa Smit (only 13 or 14 herself) and she plays her character very well. She is a typical teenager, with all the problems and issues that girls have at that time in their lives. The plot of the movie had a nice pace and the tension is built up nicely. There is never a dull moment and almost all plot twists are believable. Only problem I had was a strange scene involving a group of journalists. The way they behaved seemed a bit contrived and purely there to help the story forward. They didn't fall in the current Hollywood trap of making a movie too long, it's perfect as it is, an hour and a half of pure entertainment.

good but flawed
hyperbart1 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Strong points first. The acting is good, although I would never have casted Theo Maassen for this part. He does a proper acting job, but just thinking about his real-life carnaval hit while in the movie he is on the road with a 13-year old hostage who clearly gets Stockholm syndrome just makes me laugh.

The plot is great throughout. The Stockholm syndrome is kind of predictable, but the rest of the plot really isn't. Lots of times I was thinking 'what the hell is going to happen next' which really doesn't happen to me lots of times when watching movies. The greatest thing about the story is that we get compassionate about the main character, as does his young female hostage. But in the end we're all fooled, we haven't seen past the insanity and brutality of this man. A good message that we should never underestimate the sickness of the minds of these people.

But although this was all great, there are just some very simple things bugging me. Most notable is the complete unrealistic behaviour of police. It's just crazy that up to 2 times Johan stands next to the car, his hostage at the other side of the car, him pointing his gun at her, police all have a clear shot at him and nobody takes him down. The second time is the most crazy, policemen just drop to their knees and give him the keys to their police van. Just stupid, in real life Johan would've been taken out many times. Also the scene just after the tunnel when Johan loses the helicopter with ease is just unrealistic. And that's just painful. It just kills a potentially good movie and makes me chuckle.

So it's good, but flawed. Still good, certainly when taken into the perspective of regular Dutch production value.

Taken for a ride
richard_sleboe25 August 2008
Faced with life-long detention as a habitual offender, Johan (Theo Maassen) escapes from a mental institution. Tessa (amazing newcomer Lisa Smit) happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A teenage beauty on her way home from a night at the club, Tessa is right up Johan's aisle and promptly taken hostage. The trip that unfolds is in many ways a road movie, but at the same time, it's a chamber play: There are really only two characters, Johan and Tessa, and it's mostly set in cars. Until very late, we don't know whether Johan is essentially a good guy in a hard place or a dangerous madman out for a kill. Surely he can't be both? TBS is a flawless thriller with a great script brought to life by two terrific actors that keep you on the edge of your seat. Theo Maasen's Johan is an ambivalent character not unlike Edward Norton's altar boy Aaron Stampler in "Primal Fear", but rendered with even more subtlety and wit.

Dutch Stockholm Syndrome drama
LudwA20 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
One of the strongest Dutch movies of the year 2008 (the other one being Dunya & Desie) TBS is like a quality American TV movie, without the sentimental ending. Beautiful cinematography, excellent dark music, at their best moments create a creepy feeling like 7even. (A victim in a chest freezer!?) Theo Maassen, mainly known for his theater shows as a comedian, does a fine job, though he does seem to lose some of his focus towards the ending. Maassen plays a convicted criminal, already having served 14 years in jail, who remains under the supervision of the state until the therapists decide he's ready to return to society. (This is called TBS) Which is unlikely to happen as his supervisors want to transfer him to the long-stay, a place where you're basically stuck for good. Maassen escapes with a fellow prisoner (is he a figment of his imagination?) and, when alone, kidnaps a girl, as a trade-off, while he tries to prove his innocence. The girl seems to have problems at home (is her step dad nice to her?) and starts showing signs of the Stockholm syndrome. Which is at times hard to believe when you're kidnapped by someone who murders before your own eyes. A beautiful David Lynchian moment occurs when the two reach their destination, a typical Belgian camping site, where a little girl is singing while rocking a swing. Unfortunately, we don't hear the footsteps on the gravel, as the music drowns out most of the scene. It sometimes drowns the dialogue as well, which is actually not a bad thing considering the notorious bad dialogue in most Dutch films! TBS is worth a watch if you're interested in Northern European cinema, as a Dutch film I would give it 8/10, in the grand scheme of things it's a 6.5/10.

What does the story want to say?
box_jojo12 June 2008
Maassen did do a good job acting and the director succeeded in taking me on a trip. For me watching this movie was enjoyable for 80%, but the main reason I eventually did not like it, was because afterward I started thinking about the question: what did the movie want to tell me? I did not find an answer. This means either I did not understand the plot, or the story just did not appeal to me. I guess the last.

For being a Dutch movie the style of this work did impress me, but I would not recommend my friends to watch it.

Nice trivia: Maassen was brought to the premier in a police car and stepped out being hand coughed.

Impressed by the actor, but not the film
pravda-58 July 2008
Yes, I am impressed too... but only by the play of Theo Maassen. I think he is the only Dutch actor (and Dutchman in general!) that I really and truly like. The film itself though is not just predictable, but also lacks sense, purpose: what was it made for? To plead for capital punishment or for life term in prison that would really mean life, because some people just have no place in the society and cannot be changed? It is unclear. Some might say "to entertain", but I think a society that finds watching murders being committed on screen "entertaining" is even more sick than the killers! Overall, very impressive Maassen and quite bleak poorly written script.

Shocking and upsetting film, but brilliantly filmed and acted!!
yoreen28 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I was completely shocked after watching this film. The end was horrifying, upsetting and confusing. But even with a not-so-good-feeling after leaving the theater, I have to say I really loved this film. First of all the directing is great; Pieter Kuijpers made several really good based-on-facts films (DENNIS P., VAN GOD LOS, OFF SCREEN) and with this oeuvre he made a very worthwhile contribution to the Dutch (popular) cinema. He really understands both making grandiose action-scenes and scenes about subtle emotional human-interaction. So although I was shocked after wards, now a day later I come to really appreciate this film. Also because of the Oscar-worthy acting of Theo Maassen; his acting made him equally likable and charming as terrifying and fearsome. Brilliantly filmed and acted film! Applause! (but I think, I don't want to see it again..)

TBS, surprisingly good...
niemax16 January 2008
I watched TBS as a Sneak Preview in Cinema... I use to go there every week... Sometimes I get very disappointed... But sometimes you're so lucky... ;)

TBS is one of the movies of the latter category... Until recently I wasn't very fond of Dutch movies... They used to have a lot of sex in them, bad acting, bad directing, low quality... But only since two or three months ago I'm starting to change my opinion... TBS is another movie that makes me believe the Dutch can produce quality... Although the plot isn't all too original (an escaped prisoner wants to prove his innocence), the subject of escaping prisoners is quite a resent subject in Holland... The end was kind of unexpected (call me naive) and makes me think this movie might just get a place in my very own gallery of honor... :P The acting is very good... Both Johan and Tessa are very convincing characters... Directing too is done well... Although the movie is not visually stunning, the atmosphere is well set...

Liked it very much... I can really recommend it...

Niels...

Great
mc_polman27 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Accidentally stumbled upon during a sneak preview in Leiden, in my opinion the best Dutch movie since 'Simon'! Apparently Pieter Kuijpers has a strong connection to some of the darker figures of the Dutch entertainment industry (Tygo Gernandt, Theo Maassen), and with that sense creates a very tense atmosphere, where everything seems possible at any given moment. The only relief comes when the girl Tessa, who is beautifully played by Lisa Smit, is seduced into a smile by Johan (Theo Maassen). The biggest impact of this movie is the constant urge to be compassionate for Johan, while either consciously or subconsciously you know he doesn't deserve it, whether you already guessed the ending (which is very predictable, but nonetheless the most powerful scene), or not. On top of the continuous suspense of Johans' capriciousness the movie is very claustrophobic (nearly all small spaces, even the wood scenes are mostly shot under cover of thick trees), has nervous music, fast cuts and long shots of Johan looking angry, which took me as a prisoner as well. I almost never felt such a sense of relief when the ending came along, and that's not meant as a criticism. It feels so real that it's almost like waking from a bad dream. I'd recommend this to everyone, very good!

Wow, I am impressed
Sunny-2226 January 2008
Wow, I am impressed. I watched the movie at the premiere in Rotterdam and it really hit me like a hammer. The film isn't about shootouts ans cold blooded murder. Its more a tension, you don't know what is going to happen next. Standup comedian Maassen carries the movie without being funny, although there are a few comic relief moments. Lisa Smit plays a perfect naive 13 year old. Together they search for the truth. Is the man innocent or not? I see a remake in this. The director Pieter Verhoef made also Dennis P. and Van God Los, he is really into crime. But in his movies crime isn't black and white. We see also the good aspects of the criminal. In TBS we see that there are more sides to one story.

Down to earth and touching at the same time
baswijers3 February 2008
This film premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. It's about a criminal who's under a special type of therapy, TBS. He manages to escape. The TBS method is very controversial and is often criticized in the Netherlands for the amount of escaped criminals lately. Director Pieter Kuijpers achieves to create an interesting mood, blending fear, violence, feelings of safety and dreamy thoughts in one paranoia mixture. This atmosphere is really powerful and easily keeps this movie interesting along the way. I'm not sure about the performance of Theo Maassen (he's a dutch comedian, couldn't really get that thought out of my head) but he's not a miscast. Lisa Smit surely fulfills her roll decently. The script is excellent and suspense is present at almost every moment. It's really powerful. I found the use of sound impressive, it's pretty special and powerful.

Overall it's just a great movie. It's still lingers in my mind a bit. I would recommended this film to everyone.

Please NO Hollywood remake of this fine film.
cinegal-25 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Didn't know what to expect from this film and was very pleasantly surprised. Excellent performances, tight plot, suspenseful direction, and it kept me guessing until the unsettling and unexpected final revelation. If this were a Hollywood film it would be ruined by making the main character either totally evil or (suprise!) good at heart in the end. Congrats to the filmmakers here for creating a very flawed yet very human protagonist. Not a monster, just one screwed up human being. Thanks for trusting your audience enough to put a human face on the ultimate evil. Such a character is actually far more frightening and sinister that a stereotypically cardboard, black-hearted villain.

Didn't expect much, but it is really great!
gamecubicle15 January 2008
Awesome movie. Just came back from seeing it. Much better then most holy wood blockbusters.

I never really was into dutch movies. But this really was something different. The story is really great, and the main Actor Theo Maassen does a great job. Apparently he's as great at acting as at stand up comedy. I never expected a comedian to do this good in a thriller, but he does a great job! The girl also plays her role really nice.

The only thing some could sometimes annoy me in the movie where the rough cuts. There were ugly cuts throughout the whole movie. They probably chose to do it this way. But they really shouldn't have... But i guess it does have it's charm.

Anyways, great movie. I would give this a 8.3, but since you can only give it round number, i give an 8. Great movie! Must see if you like thriller movies!

Impressive
laurakeereweer9 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the movie not so long ago, when it premiered on television. It is the most watched 'telefilm' so far, with an average of 650,000 viewers, and as the climax came near even 850,000. This might not seem much, but considering the Netherlands has a population of 16 million and telefilms usually draw less than 300,000 viewers, it is quite a lot. And well-deserved.

Mention to anyone in Holland TBS and you'll immediately notice that it is a sensitive subject. TBS (which means 'to be held in the interest of the state') is a punishment of being held in a psychiatric hospital for crimes which are committed under psychological abnormal circumstances. It is usually combined with a sentence to prison followed by intense psychological treatment that could last from 5 years till the death of the prisoner (the longest 'sitting' convict is being held in TBS for 45 years, with no prospects of release in the future). Basically, TBS could be a punishment equally severe as life sentence as long as the convict doesn't make any progress under his treatment. In 80 percent of the cases, the treatment is effective and the convict can successfully return to society. But despite the high chance of success, TBS is criticized heavily because some TBS'ers have managed to escape from their clinics in the last few years.

And now we come to the movie. It is loosely based on true events. When the main character Johan van der S. hears he'll be transferred to the long-stay clinic, from which no one so far has been released, it is the last straw for him, as he believes he is actually innocent. He escapes his clinic to search for his mother, whom he believed is the only person who could prove his innocence. In an act of desperation, he takes a thirteen year old girl hostage and she serves as his human shield. Together they search for his mother.

Theo Maassen is the best feat of this movie. Him being a stand-up comedian, I had my doubts, but with his impressive physique (he is over 6 ft tall), his thug-face, the wicked glint in his eyes and his charm I completely overlooked the fact that he makes jokes about the enormous variety of chips in the supermarket and cheese cubes in his shows. On his expressive face you can literally see the struggle between his urges and his will to be a good man. He wants his captive, but knows that if he takes her he'll commit a terrible crime. On occasions he steals a glance at the young girl but forces himself to look away not to tempt himself into doing things he would regret later. You actually feel for the guy. He seems to be a decent man, but as the story continues and more and more of his past is revealed, no one is sure, including Johan, if he's good or bad. He can be vulnerable the one minute, charming the next and the next murderously cruel. Theo Maassen inspires both sympathy and fear for his character, an impressive achievement.

Lisa Smit is convincing as Tessa, the hostage of Johan. She portrays an insecure, naive young girl, with Lolita treats. She is afraid of Johan, but as the story unfolds he wins her trust and affection. She finds his attention interesting and provokes him at some times by showing off her legs and brushing with her hand over his, making it difficult for Johan. Lisa Smit, a teenager herself, holds herself standing against the brilliant Maassen, which is admirable on itself.

Also compliments for the amazing shots of Bert Pot, especially in the scene in which Johan gives Tessa the earrings. With the sun coming through the clouds for a small minute, the moment symbolizes a light bulb in Johan's life and a bit of colour in his gray existence. I loved that scene, it was breathtaking.

The music really supported to plot. It was haunting at some points, tense.. It gave me a claustrophobic feeling in my gut. But sometimes, when Johan shows his vulnerability, it was almost painful to hear. Perhaps heart-wrecking is the right word. It's parallel to the duplicity of the film... A thriller and a drama.

And last but not least, much credit for the director. He delivered a nerve-wrecking, emotional picture that is difficult but worth to watch. He treads the line between good and evil and makes the viewer wonder: Who is Johan? Is he a good guy, or the monster other perceive him to be? Everyone in Holland should see this film, as it's about an often discussed topic, and everyone outside of Holland should see it too, if only it was to see the impressive performance of Theo Maassen.

The only point of critique I have is the implausibility at some points in this movie. If it's so easy to break out of a TBS clinic and if the escaped criminal has so little difficulty in shaking off the dutch and Belgian police, we are right to wonder if TBS really works for society. But don't let that distract you. The performances of the actors will definitely pull you through that plot hole.

Uncommon Dutch quality
MozaredTFT4 May 2009
TBS is a movie I watched a long time ago and re-watched today - I've figured it's still worth it.

For a quick in simple summary of the movie, it works. The dialog seems a bit 'blunt', and this is a problem more Dutch movies haves. Everything else however, is seriously well done. The cameras are in the right spots, acting by Maassen and Smit is tremendously well done (I was surprised to see that this is the only 'big' movie Smit has acted in) and the story is a very good one as well.

The movie doesn't have any of the cheesiness more often seen in Dutch movies and the story is one that moves you - I myself was heavily affected by the ending, in a way few movies have managed to do (Sin City or Lord of the Rings come to mind). I really wish I would've rated the movie lower than a 9 to make my review seem less cheesy, but really, it is that good. If you've had the pleasure of hearing about this movie, then by all means watch it - you won't regret it in the slightest.

Lead the way
kosmasp18 March 2009
First of all, this movie is very well acted. Since this is a dutch movie, I never had heard of the actors before, but seeing them here, proves that they do have what it takes to lead any other movie, too. And it's shot as raw and real as a movie with a theme like this can be shot.

Speaking of which (theme), this movie is anything but easy viewing. But it's pretty ambiguous. Maybe for some it might seem pretty straight(forward), but the ambiguity lies within, what the viewer is supposed to feel in any given moment of the film. Again, Kudos to the actors, who do their best. The script is pretty slick too. Recommended viewing, if you can handle it!

Exactly the right actor for this movie
Arconada5 December 2012
Theo Maassen; you like him or you don't, there doesn't seem to be a way in between. I don't like him as a comedian, but his acting in this movie is impressive. Involuntary commitment is the subject of this movie and Theo Maassen plays Johan, the person who claims to be unjustly committed. Since he is not able to convince the psychiatrist that he is able to live some sort of a live in society, he escapes to prove that he was unjustly locked up. The movie is about this quest. Soon he is forced to kidnap a young girl to prevent his re-arrest. The interaction between him and the girl, Tessa, is elaborated very well. Theo Maassen is the person who can do that, playing a person you want to trust, but deep inside you never do. He is the most fearsome when he keeps his expression small, his eyes can tell the entire spectrum from evil to pity. Lisa Smit plays the kidnapped girl very well, from pure fright to the Stockholm syndrome induced affection. The plot is also convincing, no spectacular chase, but an end that swings between pure fear and empathy. A very impressive movie, thanks to Theo Maassen.
