Pakistani Hindus end up in hot water in India
Turfseer4 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
One of the more unusual films at the Tribeca Film Festival. It's a Pakistani film but it's about a father and 8 year old child, Hindus of an untouchable caste, who wander across the border and are arrested by Indian soldiers. The father and the child end up being imprisoned for five years in India; meanwhile, the child's mother ends up working as an indentured servant but never gives up hope that her husband and child will return.

At first, the Indian soldiers appear quite cruel and assume that the father and child are terrorists. The father ends up being tortured but eventually the two are sent to a prison camp for detainees where they receive considerably better treatment. The best thing about Ramchand Pakistani are the talented kids who play the 8 year old child (and later the older 13 year old). The child is rambunctious and comes to be loved by the detainees at the jail.

The father keeps getting in trouble when he fights other detainees who he believes are trying to take advantage of his son. Some of the strongest scenes in the film occur between an Indian soldier, a woman who is appointed as the child's matron/teacher. In the beginning, she has contempt for Ramchand (the child) because he's from an untouchable caste; but eventually the child wins her over as he is a charming rake.

The film gets a little bogged down when we cut to the scenes with the mother who spends three years paying off her husband's debt to a landlord on a farm. Some of the scenes show her solitary longing for her lost child and husband and those get a little repetitious. There's also a bit of a subplot with the wife becoming attracted to another man but that also is a bit slow-moving.

Many of the detainees in the prison camp end up to be lovable losers and are drawn mainly as comic relief. I'm not sure that those characters represent real portraits of prison camp inmates. The film ends on a happy note when Ramchand is paroled and returns to his village and reunites with his mother. We learn later that the husband is released too.

This is a colorful and moving film which shows a side of the world which most westerners are not familiar with. It also promotes Pakistani-Indian cooperation which is to be commended.

average story,very good direction
santo_banerjee12 November 2008
Ramchand Pakistani is a story of a Hindu lower caste Pakistani boy and his father living near the border area. One day both the father and the son cross the border and arrested by Indian security. They spent several years in an Indian jail and the mother does not have any information what is happened to them. After some years only the son returns to his own village in search of his mother. The film is brilliantly directed but the story line is little bit pure. Both the father and Ramchand(younger) acted very well. The film has a good back ground score and the last song 'phir wohi raaste' is excellent with a good picturization.

Good Documentary type film
ajay_ramaseshan29 March 2013
I watched this movie a few days back. It deals with the story of a young boy who accidentally crosses the Indo Pak border and lands up in prison in India. Well directed, and well shot. Both the father and the son have acted really well in this movie. However, the movie was a bit slow at times, but that I guess is what you would expect in this type of documentary type film.

Music is very nice, especially the song by Shafqat "Phir Wohi Raste" really stands out. There are also some folk songs which are present in between which are very pleasing to hear.

Overall, a good one time watch.

Great movie; language warning
walzee6 August 2008
I went to see Ramchand Pakistani at Nishat the other day and while I have to say, people have yet to learn theater ethics (save the commentary for later, please!), it was fun.

This is only the 3rd Pakistani movie I've ever watched (Quaid, Khuda Kay Liye and this) and it was great. Granted, its nothing like the typical Pakistani Lollywood product, so if you want half-naked dances performed by 50 year-olds (who claim to be 18!), look elsewhere! The movie itself was great. Mehreen Jabbar's first attempt at a feature film and she pulled off the fine details quite nicely. Cinematography, casting, the acting and dialogues were good. Fazal Hussain, the boy who played the younger Ramchand was great - despite his age, his acting was marvelous and he played his role of a boy in prison very well.

Rashid Farooqi was also very good - his character was well rounded executed very nicely as well. All of the people in the cell with Ramchand and Shankar were excellent as well - the environment created and their acting also added to the believability of their situations. Noman Ijaz's character seemed very unnecessary to me.

My only complaint with it was the language. I'm not easily offended or anything, and I can understand that swearing added to the feel of the movie and characters, but come on, someone could have at least given a warning to the people about it! Some people had their kids with them and I don't want to imagine them trying to explain the meaning of the gesture Ramchand (the older one) made! Overall, I really liked the movie. It was an all-round, polished product and though there were some editing issues and a couple unexplained scenes I noticed, I suspect that was because of the censoring in the cinema house. It's based on a true story so that's an added point to ponder.

If nothing else, watch it for the "revival of cinema in Pakistan!" :D

Harsh reality shown in polite manner
pride_of_pakistan3 December 2008
Its a good movie; Based on a harsh reality, which is was shown in soft way. So as it could be watched by both Indians and Pakistanis without any discrimination.

Although few things were shown really very softly. e.g. The jail life But still its a very good movie considering the standard of Lolly wood. Acting is good specially the acting of the Nandita Das as mother was awesome. Moreover culture highlight of Thar desert was also good although its far more tough than what shown in the movie.

This movie resulted in creating healthy awareness and as per my info the govt of both India and Pakistan agreed to have the border wired (Except for Kashmir Region Which is a disputed territory as per UN resolution.) so as accidental crossing of border could be stopped.

Nice Movie
mercede7516 February 2009
I was unsure about the movie. but when i watched it i was surprised. Directed by Mahreen Jabbar it is a nice film. The acting of the young ramchand is great. All other artists performed well.

There are a few things which should have been checked. 1. The film is slow paced. though it had the gripping element which "Khuda key Liye" lacked badly, it would have been nicer if the film were slightly faster paced.

2. Noman Ejaz was misfit. He didn't speak in typical rajhistani or sindhi way. A local actor would have done better.

3. Maria Wasti also performed well but at occasions she spoke urdu like the pakistani way and forgot the typical Indian accent.

4. The jail supretendent spoke the urdu perfectly didn't even try to change his accent at all which was too bad. Indian people don't speak urdu that way.

5. In the last scenes when ram chand is being released from Indian jail he was holding a plastic bag with English and urdu written on it. He should have been shown holding a bad with Hindi or better nothing at all written on it.

6. The ramchad's mother failed to deliver any nice acting. I wonder why she was casted in that role.

Overall the film was great and it worth watching. Expecting more films from the new director

Pakistan should make more about persecuted minorities in Pakistan
R0biSh0bi3 September 2020
This was a bit dull, thought it was going to be about how Hindus suffer in Pakistan, instead the director plays off politics by using the character in India. Ahmadiya muslims, sikhs and hindus suffer a lot in Pakistan and need better coverage than this storyline.

Unrealistic treatment of Pakistani prisoners in India
sana-sani4 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I was highly disappointed with the movie.

The treatment of Ramchand, Ramchand's father and other Pakistani prisoners in Indian Jail was way too unrealistic. It seemed as if Ramchand and his father were not in a prison rather they were in a recreational centre.

The Indian Jailer, Indian Police, and Indian Prisoners were super nice to Ramchand and other Pakistani Prisoners. Life is not a fairy tale. Nice things do not happen in prisons . This kind of SUPER NICE treatment is not given to any Pakistani anywhere in the world, by any Indian.

The Director made this movie to please the Indian Audience. A total waste of time and money.
