Script Contains a Wink to MARY HARTMAN
kgraovac4 November 2023
Dot lands the lead in a play and after seeing it on opening night, the girls are unable to tell Dot that her performance was abysmal. Their false praise gives Dot the confidence to quit her job to become a full-time actress, but a meeting with the producer reveals the show will go on without her.

This episode is better than I remembered it. It has a terrific opening scene where the girls discuss Dot's recent audition for a floor wax commercial. Maggie states, "When she was mopping, she didn't seem to care about the condition of her floor". That must have been an in-joke from the writers to Louise Lasser's MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN character - because Mary was obsessed with the dreaded waxy yellow build-up.

We don't actually see Dot's play but the small moments make this episode as good as it is. Maggie has a funny entrance in the theatre lobby because her new shoes are killing her feet.

There are some fun insults between Nancy and Cassie.

NANCY: I've had it!

CASSIE: I doubt it.

Dennis spends the night at Sonny's place because he had another fight with Mildred (Nancy's delight never gets old).

There are some great scenes between Dot and Nancy -- the best is at the end where Nancy imparts some wisdom to Dot and confesses that she, too, once had a dream of being a star.

SONGS: Dot sings "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off"
