A Strong Showing For Season 2 -- and Marian Mercer
kgraovac3 November 2023
Dennis is in a foul mood and the ladies find out that he caught wife Mildred at her favorite restaurant with another man running his fingers through her hair. Seeing Dennis as easy prey, Nancy's delighted at this news.

Dennis gives some backstory on his marriage that depicts Mildred as somewhat of a lunatic. The revelations make Maggie extremely uncomfortable - especially when it is said that Mildred once stood naked on top of the TV set to draw Dennis' attention away from a football game!

The gals agree to help Dennis by using the old jealousy routine. Cassie accompanies him to Mildred's haunt and stages a fake seduction - which ends up with Dennis wearing a plate of linguine when they are spotted together - and Mildred now wanting a divorce.

In a minor (but great) subplot, Dot reveals to the girls that Jan once spent the night with Sonny her first week at Above the Top. The girls then try to reason with Mildred in an apartment hallway - but it doesn't go well - especially after Maggie asks her about the naked TV incident.

Nancy then visits Dennis for a REAL seduction and confesses her feelings via poetry. Marian Mercer looks very slim in her blouse-and-slacks ensemble. It's kind of odd not seeing her in billowing fabric. Mildred catches them and storms out - again. The next day at work, Nancy - wearing her hair down and acting all cheery -- seems very pleased with herself for breaking up the marriage, until Dennis informs her that he and Mildred have made up.

There seems to be a lot going on in this episode but it all flows perfectly and this one is a great showcase for Marian Mercer - probably her best of the season. The scene with Cassie posing as Dennis' date is actually the least funny, although the part where the waiter hits on her is cute.

It's also very amusing that while Maggie was at first disturbed hearing about Mildred's bizarre behavior, she is eager to find out about the TV incident - maybe she thinks they are kindred spirits?

Jan's reaction when Dot reveals the sordid secret is well-played by Barrie Youngfellow.

This is one of the strongest Season 2 episodes. Each of the characters has a great moment, though it's still a little disappointing to see Cassie written so bland.

The current version airing on TV and streaming services is missing some footage at the beginning where the waitresses complain in the dining room about Dennis' foul mood and there is a line about Dot being Nancy's least favorite. We know this will eventually be the case, but so far Jan has always had to bear the brunt of Nancy's wrath. It's a good scene - too bad it was cut.

SONGS: Sonny sings "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy".
