Season Two Review
southdavid16 June 2021
Having finished the first season of this, inspired by the Guardians best TV of 2020 list, we couldn't help but push immediately on into the second run. I found it more satisfying than the first (for obvious story-based reasons) and maintaining the quality of performance.

Over a year after the events at the conclusion of season one, Jody (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness) still hasn't been found. Nelly (Lennie James) is helping Grace (Olive Gray) through the prosecution of Gideon Charles (Adrian Edmondson) but the case is taking quite the toll on her. When it collapses, and Grace disappears, Nelly is again left scouring London for her. He's forces his friends into a difficult position though, when Charles ends up dead, which is devastating for their chances of finding Jody.

Again, there's much to appreciate about the series, despite its dark tone. Performances are great but the story is better this time too. It's a little more focused on Nelly and less on the rest of the characters, characters who particularly suffer in this are Barry (and his son, who has disappeared completely) and Tina (and her son, who has disappeared completely). The most notable new arrival is Lesley Manville, who plays Charles wife and has so much to do as she comes to understand exactly who and what her husband was.

The conclusion we've reached at the end of the second season does make sense, although I understand that the plan is for a third to be produced when covid and schedules allow. I do accept the criticism that I read in some of the reviews that Nelly should have gone to the police with his information on several occasions.

Wonderfully performed stuff, I'll be back for the 3rd, if we do get it.
