"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" I Deserve Some Loving Too (TV Episode 2020) Poster

Delaney Williams: John Buchanan

Quotes

  • John Buchanan : [to Carisi]  My client had a long, dark night of the soul to think about this.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Well, there's not a whole lot to think about. It's all over but the hard time, O'Toole.

John Buchanan : Back up. Hold on a second.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : No. I'm done waiting. Tomorrow, Rosamie and Maggie are gonna take the stand, but before they do, we're gonna bump the charges from Rape Three to Rape One, and when they're done testifying, the jury and your client will be in tears.

John Buchanan : Let's show a little compassion for a fellow officer, Counselor.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Oh, the same compassion that he showed his victims?

ICE Agent Rory O'Toole : I was doing my job. I've been serving my country on the front lines of a foreign invasion for 20 years.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Serving your country? By dipping your wick?

ICE Agent Rory O'Toole : It was a test. It's the only way to know if they really love their husbands.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Okay, okay. Now, you told me before that if they really loved their husbands, they wouldn't sleep with you.

    ICE Agent Rory O'Toole : That's right.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : But when they refused you, you threw 'em in jail, and if they did sleep with you, you gave 'em their green card. Now, you can lie to yourself all you want, but you raped these women.

ICE Agent Rory O'Toole : No, absolutely not. I was just doing what I had to do to protect our borders.

John Buchanan : Rory, he understands...

ICE Agent Rory O'Toole : He doesn't understand it. I'm holding the line between more mouths to feed, more people on Medicaid, in our public schools and our hospitals, okay? Taking our jobs. These people are bleeding the system dry and I stop that from happening.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : All right, stop. Not one more word from you. What you did to these women how many of them have had to live with your violation in secret, in fear? You took advantage of them when they were at their most helpless, their most vulnerable, and you used the power of your government position to force them to demean themselves. They came here hoping for the American dream, and you made their lives a nightmare.

    [to Buchanan]

Dominick Carisi Jr. : I'm sick of your client, Counselor. You want to talk deal? He needs to shut his mouth and nod yes.

  • Dominick Carisi Jr. : Your Honor, two more witnesses have come forward. The prosecution intends to call Maggie Quigley...

[the court doors open and Rollins leads Rosamie and Eddie in]

Dominick Carisi Jr. : ...and Rosamie Klein.

John Buchanan : Your Honor, this is the first we're hearing of these witnesses. I need time to prepare. I request an adjournment for the day.

Judge Felicia Catano : So granted.

John Buchanan : [quietly to Carisi]  Where the hell'd you pull these two out of?

Dominick Carisi Jr. : The back of your client's van. My guess, he's not gonna want to hear their testimony in open court.

    [joining Benson]

Dominick Carisi Jr. : You see O'Toole's face? He's gonna fold.

Olivia Benson : Make it hurt.

  • John Buchanan : I want to give you an early out here. My client is a respected USCIS investigator. His job is to uncover scams for green cards, which is what he did. This was a fake marriage.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Nice try. O'Toole was extorting sex in exchange for a green card.

ICE Agent Rory O'Toole : Please listen to the tape. Everything I said, it was a test.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : You had a mattress in the back seat.

ICE Agent Rory O'Toole : Well, it has to look real. That's part of the setup.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : The setup? We found traces of your DNA on the mattress.

ICE Agent Rory O'Toole : It's my mattress.

John Buchanan : Did you find any of your supposed victims' DNA? I didn't think so. He wasn't going to sexually assault your UC; he was trying to find out how far she would go.

ICE Agent Rory O'Toole : It's like with a narc cop, right? You buy the drugs, and then you make the bust.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Okay, so you were gonna sleep with her?

John Buchanan : No! And you don't know that because your team stepped in before Mr. O'Toole had the chance to bust her.

ICE Agent Rory O'Toole : If the wife is willing to cross the line to infidelity for a green card, how real can the love be?

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Okay, none of this is DHS protocol, and I don't see any jurors buying it for a second.

John Buchanan : You need 12. I only need one.

  • Dominick Carisi Jr. : Our scheduled witness is not available at this time, Your Honor. We move for a continuance.

John Buchanan : Objection. I have a defense prepared. I'd like to move ahead with my case.

Judge Felicia Catano : How long do you need, Mr. Carisi?

Dominick Carisi Jr. : A few days, Your Honor.

Judge Felicia Catano : I'll give you 'til 9:00 tomorrow.

John Buchanan : At which time, if there is no further prosecution witnesses, we'll be moving ahead for a dismissal.

Judge Felicia Catano : Don't get ahead of yourself, Mr. Buchanan.

  • Sergeant Hasim Khaldun : Detective Rollins and I posed as a mixed-ethnicity, interreligious couple. We were hoping to draw Mr. O'Toole's attention, which we did.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Did he do follow-up interviews?

Sergeant Hasim Khaldun : Not with me, but he asked for a private, night-time meeting with Detective Rollins in his minivan.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Thank you, Sergeant Khaldun.

John Buchanan : So, you lied to a fellow officer about your religion, your marriage, your job, about every detail of your life?

Sergeant Hasim Khaldun : It was an undercover operation.

John Buchanan : In other words, it was a fake marriage. And my client figured it out.

Sergeant Hasim Khaldun : I believe he thought our marriage was real, but the red flags it raised gave him leverage to sexually extort Detective Rollins.

John Buchanan : You mean your fake wife. So, your testimony is that you're a good enough liar to fool a trained investigator with 20 years' experience?

Sergeant Hasim Khaldun : You could put it that way.

John Buchanan : How about a jury?

    Dominick Carisi Jr. : Objection.

John Buchanan : Withdrawn. Nothing further.

  • Amanda Rollins : Mr. O'Toole told me I had to meet him in private in his minivan. And as you heard on the tape, he said if I wanted the green card, then I had to have sex with him.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : And what were his exact words?

Amanda Rollins : That he deserved some loving, too.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Thank you, detective.

John Buchanan : But you didn't have sex with my client, did you?

    Amanda Rollins : No.

John Buchanan : He never assaulted you in any way?

Amanda Rollins : No, but his intent was clear and graphic. He said we needed to go to the back of the van where there was a mattress.

John Buchanan : And did you go to the back of the van?

Amanda Rollins : No. My support team pulled open the doors before that could happen.

John Buchanan : So, isn't it possible he was testing you to see if you were really a faithful wife?

Amanda Rollins : Please. That is not what was going on.

John Buchanan : Well... you were playing a role. Isn't it possible that he was playing one, too? Please answer the question, Detective.

Amanda Rollins : Yes. Anything is possible.

  • Duane Varik : And all the immigrant women Mr. O'Toole requested that I sent him were young, attractive, diverse, and desperate.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Desperate. How?

Duane Varik : They fled gangs, war, poverty. They were terrified of being sent back.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : So terrified of being deported that they gave into Mr. O'Toole's sexual demands?

John Buchanan : Objection. Calls for speculation.

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Withdrawn. Mr. Varik, is there a reason that your boss pulled these particular women's files?

Duane Varik : Yes, he called it his Baskin-Robbins file. One in every flavor.

  • John Buchanan : Mr. Varik, you made a deal with the prosecution to testify today?

Dominick Carisi Jr. : Your Honor, the jury already heard this on Mr. Varik's direct...

John Buchanan : Yes, that's right. You were charged with forcible touching and unlawful sexual surveillance. That's upskirting, isn't it? Good thing I wore pants today.

Judge Felicia Catano : Move along, Mr. Buchanan.

John Buchanan : After you were arrested, the detectives found your upskirting files on your work computer?

    Duane Varik : Yes.

John Buchanan : Who gave them access?

Duane Varik : My supervisor, Mr. O'Toole.

John Buchanan : And that's when you decided to play "Let's Make a Deal"?

    Dominick Carisi Jr. : Objection.

John Buchanan : I'll rephrase. According to your own testimony, you were aware of this egregious behavior for years, but you never reported it, never said a word about it to anyone?

Duane Varik : I'm not proud of that.

John Buchanan : You have a lot not to be proud of, Mr. Varik. Enough to make up charges like this to save your own ass?

    Dominick Carisi Jr. : Objection.

John Buchanan : Withdrawn. Nothing further.
