A need for speed
dxnntbktfz13 August 2021
For a movie about racing, it sure was slow. All drama, well at least an attempt at drama that never really hit. The racing was few and far between. Combined with the terrible acting I suggest you pass on this.

Movie ok

Movie was ok but the audio sucked. One scene it's blaring loud the next it's a whisper. Better get a real audio tech ! Drama needs some help too but audio was the worst and annoying.

Disappointing
selfall15 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I was surprised to see a rating of 9.2 on IMDb for this movie and thought I would have to see it . I see it has gone down to 7 now which, in my opinion isn't low enough. This movie was an exercise in turning something very exciting into a mediocre flat-line. The acting was atrocious, the storyline was confusing and uninspiring. It was akin to a movie made by school students on a very low budget. I was so disappointed and so was my husband. As someone who didn't know the story of how all this began I don't feel I got a clear and interesting picture. The part where he was in the army was ludicrous. He was sat in a ditch with perfectly clean pants on, looking like he was having a tea break on hay making day. The mother was wearing the worst wig it was like something "old Ma Riley" would wear. It was a massive flop. Except of course for the cars which were stunning.

Worst Movie of all time !!! Hands down
meilo010318 January 2011
All i can say is that IMDb had given it a 9.2 so i watched it ....the whole thing thinking it would get good .....what a waste of time i would have rather had a root canal !!!! Very dis-pleased considering it is a true story I give the movie a -10 the script and acting was horrible I think my grade 8 drama class could have done a better job the movie jumps around to much there isn't enough of a lead in the movie is bad from the get go the only good thing about the movie was the old cars they should have made this movie a short story it drags on and then just gets worse as the movie goes on to the point that you actually forget what the story is about Im still confused by it ....they are running bootlegged liquor then start a race track he goes to war and comes back nothing is changed and he tries racing again thats it in a nut shell

A Disappointing Flick
vikpk18 January 2011
This movie may have been a great story told; unfortunately it it is dramatically flawed. One cannot feel anything for the characters as their emotions and choices are somehow blurred in the sequence of scenes without transitions. In one scene the boys are talking, in the next some guy is driving a tractor in the grassy field. We must then do guesswork to realize that it's the dad of one of them that made them a race track. This is only one example of many.

The WWII war scenes are simply unbearable and bordering on the ridiculous. Just few of them, though, which helped.

The soundtrack starts promising since country and Southern music can be so rich with raw feelings and simple harmony; but the music fades away in the sequence of badly connected scenes. The film fails to grasp the atmosphere of the Great Depression and that of the South. To the extent it succeeds -- it is flat and only raises eyebrows.

The dialog is as flat as are the characters, the camera work and the editing. (The best part was that they did not use any profanity.) The movie did not deserve at all the 9 stars it had received in the beginning.

What a mistake watching this !
ciffic16 January 2011
I gave the minimum rating as I had absolutely no fun and no emotions while watching this boring flick.

Such a poor, flat and annoying movie. I won't go deep into it as it not worth the effort, but let me just mention a few things: -poor acting -almost no story -cheap love story side -no racing -no thrill at all ... If you still think you should give it a try, you will end up waiting for the whole for something meaningful to happen.

The only way this could be interesting is probably if you were born in caroline in the early 1900s. Luckily i didn't have to pay to watch this failure.

How can it get such a rating ?

It's a coma movie
ommasoha31 January 2011
One of the very worst - Two Thumbs Way Down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I watch a lot of movies and I must say this is with out a doubt one of the worst movies I have ever seen ever. I could not even finish watching it. Nothing realistic about it. The acting stunk, the dialog was beyond bad, it was the worst and the costumes not even kind of believable. I mean to say I have never seen such clean clothes on farm boys or racers. Low budget or not, just really, really bad movie making!!!!! In my opinion it is an extreme waste of time. I really have a hard time believing that this film ever made it off of the cutting room floor. This movie does not put you to sleep it puts you in a coma!

Great Depression, Moonshining, WW2, Stock Car Racing
mrhxx7 September 2019
An acceptable family oriented movie(males specifically)! Don't expect a lot of excitement and mayhem but it is a good story! Watch it or not based on my titleline & the first sentence of review!

Could have been good
tylertwald28 November 2020
Bunch of guys that look about 35 being passed off as teenagers whining that their impoverished farming families wont let them race the vehicles.

Has all the elements that could have made a great movie, but just so poorly done.

Red Dirt Rising Authentic Story of Early Days of Stock Car Racing
SharonYCobb5 January 2011
Having grown up in a stock car racing family, I recognize the realities of a passion for racing without the financial backing to realize the dream. This film tells the story of a young man with a compelling desire to race with the big boys, but no way to break in. It's a film about never giving up on your dream, no matter what. It's about allowing the desire to race and compete to clear the path to victory.

The story is moving. The film is beautifully shot and directed. The acting is honest. Even though Red Dirt Rising is an independent film produced with a small budget, it can hold it's own against the big Hollywood dramas. This film is a winner and you don't have to be a race fan to root for the hero.

Don't understand the bad reviews
AlabamaCowboy28 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I guess those giving the bad reviews were expecting lots of action and wrecks and cars demolished. This movie is not that.

A great representation of the start of stock car racing, I throughly enjoyed the movie. Especially towards the end when it explains who each character is. The only thing I wish, was they would have used the name of the man who made NASCAR the sport it is, but Bud Nance is a good substitute.

Good movie for fans of racing and families
ptrckwlls52318 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The film is a well produced accurate account of the American south in the 1930's as well as a great story about the beginning of stock car racing. Although a bit slow at times, I'd recommend the movie to anyone who has an interest in the period or of racing.

Having originally grew up in the south I appreciate the fact that the actors had authentic accents and that the film wasn't glossily made the way Hollywood seems to over glamorize the 30's and 40's. There are defiantly things that could of been improved but for a small movie, it delivers on one important factor, which is heart. The struggle in the south is well represented and you find yourself hoping that the main character doesn't give up on his dreams. It's a beautifully shot movie particularly the racing sequences as the movie makers made the cars and country roads look beautiful. The film is a bit slow in places (it could have defiantly have been a bit faster in the first 20 minutes) but it does a good job giving you a little idea of the way it was for the early drivers.

All in all, its a good movie that your whole family can enjoy.

A story of an early example of the love or racing
johnironbear4 October 2021
I grew up in the generation following this story, but it appealed to me for several reasons. First of all, I have loved dirt track racing since my father took me to them as a kid back in the day in south Texas, so for me, this movie is real. It isn't the typical Hollywood fare these days, not by a long shot, but it is a real story of love of struggle, of persistence, and of following one's dreams. It's slow in the beginning, but that beginning also lays the foundation for the rest of the film as there are both story and character development happening, and the result is a lovely story of what love, and dedication and following our dreams will bring so long as we don't give up.
