- Major Swanson's son, Jud, arrives at the fort as a new gung-ho recruit and has a hard time adjusting.
- New recruits arrive in Salt River to be taken to Fort Apache. A man starts asking one of them for information about the Army escorting a herd of cattle through Indian country, and they get in a fight. When Lt. Masters breaks up the fight, he is astonished to discover that the cocksure young man is Major Swanson's son Jud. Swanson is surprised when the young man arrives at the fort, because he had nominated his son for placement at West Point. So that the boy won't think he has a privileged place at the fort, Masters sets him to doing disagreeable duties like stable work, scrubbing floors, and straightening nails, and won't allow him to see his father. After a week, Jud is fed up and leaves the fort, running straight into a band of rustlers who are after the cattle. But no fear, as he's been followed by Rusty and Rinty.
