Is what it is...
billyhoes6 April 2022
This movie is what it is. I'm not sure you can call it good because it either needed more time to develop or less time spent developing. To anyone that thinks this is an "alternate reality" piece though, this kind of thing happened. Maybe not EXACTLY this kind of thing but black people in the deep south were denied freedom well into the 20th century (as late as 1963). Don't believe me, google Mae Louise Walls Miller, A little research might help you appreciate the premise more and perhaps break away from the THIS DOESN'T FIT IN WITH MY WORLD VIEW SO I AM GOING TO THROW MUD AT IT crowd. Just sayin'....

Honest review of Alice...
Vises17 June 2022
First off, I genuinely love Keke Palmer, Johnny Lee Miller and Common.

With the expectations high I have to say that I may have set myself up for something a little grander BUT that certainly did not take away from what was a very enjoyable film.

There are parallels to The Village (2004) and Antebellum (2020) but they are mostly on the surface. I did guess 'The Village' bit very early on, but I believe that we were meant to, as there was a very obvious hint within the first 15 mins.

Where I think the story suffered a bit was how quickly it wrapped up as there clearly would be a lot for Alice to unpack when she becomes fully aware of her circumstances. Coming in at just over 90mins., I would've dedicated another 30 mins to this easily to flesh out the ending better.

The other reviews that seem to think that the influence of popular (and historical) African-American culture wouldn't have informed the protagonist are reaching. While a bit rushed, Alice indeed becomes informed from a pretty good balance of history and pop culture. And why wouldn't she model herself after the female icons of the time?

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so I wouldn't discount the parallels too much from The Village, as indeed the movie takes that root from an actual recent historical event.

A few points shaved for the rushing to conclusion, and for a little unbalanced screen time for the antagonists to add some more weight.

The down-voting is an issue for me and those who follow my reviews are keenly aware of this. But, while I wouldn't upvote in response, the honest rating for Alice is 6.7/10 but the score and soundtrack will subsidize that back to a 7/10.

Another review bombed film
beanofdoom7 April 2022
Alice was fine. It was a perfectly enjoyable film. It does not deserve its current 4.4 rating. The acting and cinematography was top notch, the dialogue was simplistic but the story was was entertaining and meaningful. Only mistake these folks made was putting a black face on the cover and-- 'boom!'-- minus three stars. Ignore these jive talkin' reviewers, man; Alice is all-right.

for those who say " in what universe"
harley-088107 April 2022
Elements of the film's background are loosely based on the narrative of Mae Louise Walls Miller, who escaped from slavery in 1963.

Nearly five years after the Waterford meeting, however, Mae Louise Walls Miller of Mississippi told Harrell that she didn't get her freedom until 1963. Miller told her about how she and her mother were raped and beaten when they went to the main house to work.

Since that time, Harrell has continued her research and documenting their story.

Over time, she said the "modern day slaves" did leave Waterford Plantation as their offspring were able to attend college or buy a home. While many of their parents, by then in their 70s and in poor health, knew they were free but still stayed where they were or went to another plantation. But she added they encouraged their children "to move ahead and take their liberties or freedom."

Poor attempt
FeastMode14 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I fully sympathize with the struggle depicted in this movie. It's just not a good movie. Poorly-made in most aspects. Even worse, the concept is copied from another recent movie which is executed significantly better in every way. I can't say which movie because it would be a spoiler, but it came out in 2020 and it's awesome. (1 viewing, 6/14/2022)

SPOILERS

As we've seen many times, the morons who made the trailers ruined half the movie. You don't find out this takes place a century later until 40 minutes into the movie. It would have been a huge reveal. I don't understand how these trailer creators are allowed to continue to spoil major reveals.

When she escapes into the real world, her reactions and adjustment to the differences are not in the least bit believable. I'm not blaming the actress, I'm blaming the script.

This movie is filled with stupid parts and dumb character decisions. This is especially the case with the character played by Common. He thinks she has amnesia but doesn't question why she's asking if black people are free or about owners. Or if there are small people in the TV.

Then for some reason Alice is unable to explain something so basic, she lived her entire life on a plantation under the guise that slavery is still legal. He finally understands after the conversation she has with the owner's wife, but they don't even bother showing his reaction when he comes to that tragically shocking realization. And don't even get me started on the wife's logic to come talk to Alice and convince her they were being nice.

The last baffling reaction was when Alice finds out her husband is not actually dead. It's so underwhelming like the rest of this movie.

I loved this flick!
subxerogravity20 March 2022
When I saw the movie poster, then went to see the flick, the first act of the movie did not match what the poster was telling me this was going to be. Then at some point the transaction between what this movie is and what the movie poster told me it is happens and I'm blown away.

If you've seen the village the first half of the movie is the village, but that second half, that's a Blaxploitation film! One of the best I've ever seen.

It starts out with something that seems farfetched (or a truth I don't wish to believe), then it gives a very real metaphor about revolution.

I want to point out that the movie itself states its inspired by something that actually happen, which only adds fuel to the fire.

I thought KeKe Plamer was enjoyable as Alice, but Rapper/Actor Common looked like he was made for his role as Frank.

I thought the format perfectly Mimicked a movie made in 1973 without pretending it was a movie made in 1973.

Really enjoyed myself here!

Alice
JoBloTheMovieCritic19 March 2022
4/10 - I love Keke Palmer, but I'm unfortuantely afraid that this one turned out to be a rather huge miss in that it just was not in any way developed enough to be a full feature film and the arc just felt so lackluster.

It's been done before
zqqajzcnr5 April 2022
We've come along way in more ways than one. I would've love to see something a bit more original with this talented cast but not oh well. We saw this in Antebellum with Janelle Monae and by the way did a phenomenal job. Anyway if you looking for something to pass the time it's a decent movie . I'm just a retired guy that watches way too many movies .

This isn't very good
jmdillehay24 January 2022
This movie is half baked. 90 minutes was not nearly long enough to accomplish what this director tried to force. The later part of the film was rushed and just felt....dumb.

Not a good film.

Reminded Me Of The Old Black Exploitation Movies
stevendbeard20 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I saw Alice, starring Keke Palmer-Hustlers, Scream:The TV Series_tv; Common-John Wick:Chapter 2, Wanted; Jonny Lee Miller-Elementary_tv, Dracula 2000 and Alicia Witt-Orange is the New Black_tv, A Madea Christmas.

This movie reminded me of the old Black Exploitation movies of the 70's that I loved. It even has some scenes of Pam Grier in action from one of her famous films, Coffy. Believe it or not, it also states at the beginning of the movie that this movie is inspired by true events. It opens with Keke as a slave on a Georgia plantation-along with about 10 or 15 others-that is run by Jonny. Alicia plays Jonny's wife. After the usual beatings and torture that Keke endures-as is customary on plantations like this one-she escapes into the woods and comes upon a paved highway, discovering that she is really in 1973. Common is the truck driver that rescues her and tries to get her help, believing-like most people would-that Keke has amnesia or is just plain crazy. After Keke gets a fast education as to how things have changed, she wants to go back and rescue the rest of her friends and family. And, by the way, also get retribution from Jonny-that's where the Black Exploitation part really kicks in, although it could have ended a little better. Maybe, I just remember the older movies as being better. There is also a few recognizable songs from that time period-1973-that you should remember.

It's rated R for violence and language and has a running time of 1 hour & 40 minutes.

I enjoyed it but I'm not sure if I would buy it on DVD-it was a little slow and the ending could have been better. If you are a fan of the Black Exploitation films, it would be a good rental.

Doing the right thing is never wrong
nogodnomasters2 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Alice (Keke Palmer)is a slave on a plantation in Georgia. After an altercation with the master, she manages to run away and suddenly we discover the film is a rip off of "The Village" who had "Alice" as its main character too.

The production seemed to suffer from direction and message. Getting direction from Pam Grier movies leaves much to be desired.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Wow! I sure must have missed something in American History at school....
Wikkid_Gamez25 April 2022
.... Or more than likely I just wasn't taught the truth on this, like with so many other aspects of American History! I can't believe that I had no idea that this crap went on until the 1960's! Reading some of the reviews here after watching this movie I followed someone's comment suggesting people look into Mae Louise Miller if they wanted proof that this could have happened and I was shocked. I can't believe there were people who got away with slavery until my mothers generation here in America. There's no excuse for it and I can't believe it was possible, well, I can believe, but you know... What I truly can't believe are all the comments by people here claiming its all a bunch of "woke bs".... People in denial I guess. Pretty pathetic. Probably the same people that believe all the conspiracy theories out there and believe everything is a coverup yet when real situations like this are brought to light they claim its bs... Which makes no sense. But whatever.... That said, this movie was well done and as shocking as the reality of the concept was it made a great revenge story! Weaving reality with fiction making it a disturbing, yet entertaining movie.

Every movie out we have the '1st in line ' to tell us that the said movie is similar to this, that, or whatever... SO WHAT!!! Who cares if it's a somewhat rip off of another movie.. if it's entertaining it doesn't matter.

I don't pay attention to the rodger ebberts here who try to persuade you to pass on the movie..

KEKE UNDERSTOOD THE ASSIGNMENT
davisravone25 June 2022
Beginning too slow, middle not enough, ending to rushed. This should've been an hr longer to develop the storyline. Not even the smartest slave could transform that much in 24 hrs. Hell it take me a 2days to read my mail🤣. Common never got his character off and the extras were just that. Keke pushed it thru with the "Angela Bassist" style performance 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

So much potential WASTED
AlfredYale27 November 2022
This could have been such a great movie if they hadn't rushed it or done a bit of research on formerly enslaved people. For instance, someone living in the 19th century wouldn't be accustomed to modern bathrooms, know how to hold a phone's receiver, no fear of TV, cars, trucks, modern lamps, electricity, instantly loose all fear of whites in power...the list is endless. Why did they rush the character development on Alice? And why were the filmmaker so lazy with the seemingly obvious? We're really supposed to believe that Alice easily she ditched her corsets to his clothes that magically fit her perfectly -- despite him being a half a foot taller and at least 50lbs. Heaver? Palmer's outstanding performance is the main reason to see this film. Too bad the awful script gave her so little to work with.

Based on a true ...... WHA??????
A_Different_Drummer23 March 2022
If this "hi-concept" Hollywood lark were any more woke, the DVD would come with a free rooster. Allegedly "inspired" by a true story (?), the trick to appreciating this one is to skip the first 30 mins (trust me!) and just jump in, try it out. It grows on you. Keke Palmer, who looks and talks a lot like the current lead in Star Trek Discovery, goes above and beyond the call of duty here, trying to sell a story with plot holes big enough to absorb a Dwarf Star. That said, there is an underlying emotional charge to this odd tale that actually deserves an audience. And the retro vibe revisiting the 70s (which honestly may be lost on current filmgoers) actually works more often than it fails.

Basically Antebellum but worse...
chenp-5470820 April 2022
Saw this back at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.

"Alice" is about a slave in the antebellum South escapes her secluded plantation only to discover a shocking reality that lies beyond the tree line. Directed by Krystin Ver Linden and stars Keke Palmer, Common and Jonny Lee Miller. Out of all the films I have seen at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, this was one of the worst ones I have seen. Linden is very clear on trying to create a political movie about the issues of slavery in a cense of the modern world or racism in the modern time but it's absolute ludicrous writing, poor production that feels like they got the costumes from a Walmart shop, poor pacing, bland camerawork, and really bad acting from really good stars makes the movie far apart very quickly.

The use of Based on True Events has been overdone in many bad horror movies and it's obviously not true. It's just used as a gimmick honestly. The topic of racism and trafficking does exist still in this modern world and I believe Linden had good intentions on making this movie. Based on the Q&A, she seems to be genuine about this movie but it really is half baked with many cliches, terrible writing, and uninteresting characters that you aren't rooting for. Common and Keke Palmer are pretty good stars but here they are not good. Their performances feel really sloopy and Common's dialogue is so bad like he just mumbles his words like he is high or something throughout this movie. It's a shame because Common has been in some good films like John Wick 2, Selma, Megan Leavey, and Girls Trip. I honestly don't know if it was the bad direction or just Common being not as invested in this story. Could be both.

The story is a water down version of the movie "Antebellum". Although Antebellum wasn't good either, that movie still had some creative moments and the tone of the movie is more fitting than "Alice". Alice seems lost on whether it wants to be. It tries to be an horror, political, action, and cheesy kind of movie at the end of the day with very little substance to give. This movie is loosely based on the life and case of Mae Louise Miller and if this is what the movie is trying to go for, I honestly think it's pretty insulting. Miller shouldn't be associated with this movie.

At the end, Palmer and Common are talented but this movie is bad.

Rating: F.

Had a lot of potential
SaritaLaurin24 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Not reading other reviews because I am sure they are harder on this movie than it needs to be, but I will be as real as possible. The storyline was actually very good. Reminding me a little of the movie Antebellum and how there are these cruel white people who are still living hundreds of years in the past to keep their black slaves from knowing they are actually free. So here is what I didn't like about the movie and could've done such a better job at. One, I wished Alice would have gone through a couple of more things right before deciding to go confront Paul. Two, Commons character needed more depth and he should have got the help from his black panther brothers , etc to help free the others. Third, where did the husband who was supposed to be dead come from?

What I did like was Keke Palners acting, she has always been great with expression. I liked the history lessons we got in the movie. I also liked that it was in the 70s during a time where black people were fighting for civil rights. It showed the audience how black people had been fightingbfor freedom since the beginning. As a writer, there are quite a few things I would've changed or added to spruce it up. Movies like these need more depth, especially when it comes to liberating stories. But overall with the right changes it could have easily been am 8 star movie!

Sad Interpretation of a Sad Tale - Alice
arthur_tafero12 October 2022
While this might have been a worthy project if it had, in fact, been carried out with more accurate authenticity, rather than just being "based on" the tragic circumstances of the real Alice, the film might have had a chance to have been a solid film. Unfortunately, the current interpretation is lacking in several areas. The cast, headed by Kede Palmer, is more than competent, but the editing, storyline and continuity suffer far too much from inconsistency, and a lack of logic. Yes, Alice lived virtually under a rock on her plantation, but at some point, it might have occurred to her to ask other people what was going on in the outside world.

Watch Antebellum instead...
deloudelouvain7 May 2022
In 2020 I watched Antebellum, which I found excellent and rated with nine stars. Now, two years later I watched Alice, which is basically the same story, well almost, they just gave it another turn. I don't know why writer/director Krystin Ver Linden would do such a thing. Just create your own story, or copy a very old movie that could need some updating, but a two year old movie (an excellent one) doesn't need to be remade. That said Alice is watchable, you just don't have that element of surprise you got with Antebellum. The acting wasn't bad either, but it all just feels lesser good than Antebellum. The second part of Alice, when the things should get better was actually the weaker part of the movie, with a lot of scenes that were poorly written. I give it a six but honestly I think this movie should just not have been made. Just watch Antebellum instead, it's much better.

Well done
The 70s were characterized perfectly, the acting was great, it was an interesting storyline, and it felt like a movie made in the 70s. It all came together perfectly.

Mixed Feelings
hwg-2179530 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I want to like this film because I read the story of Mae Louise Walls but I think I would have liked it to be more true to life than a woman who goes Pam Grier after reading some books. Alice went quick fast from not knowing what a car is to using public transportation, to running aound a library to being Shack. Shut your mouth. It was kind of unrealistic. I would imagine that Mae Louise had a terrible time adapting and didn't want to grab a gun first thing. I do however believe that the police in Mississippi in the 1960s would not have helped get people off of a plantation. I read that the Federal Government had to do itm i suspect the police were involved. It makes me wonder if there are actually people still trapped in 2022 in slavery with no idea it ended. I wouldn't doubt it. There are very large plots of land where it could be possible. Kind of scary to think about it. Even beyond modern sex slavery. I recently watched a movie where a man who was a slave was beaten beyond recognition and burned alive right on camera. It was the first time it wasnt implied. We watched him melt and burn, camera never turned. My eyes were glued while I cried tears of fear and anger. It was just so terrifying to see it from the perspective of an actual slave. Having your life completely controlled by others. I think it was the first time in my adult life I realized just what that meant. People burned you alive and you and no one around you could fo a thing. It went so far beyond Roots snd outdid Dejango's vibe. I get that this movie was supposed to connect the 1800 to how we were in the 1970s intellectually but it's just not quite how I would have done it. It's more for entertainment? Nothing about slavery entertains me. Maybe it was for enrichment? Knowledge? I really just don't know exactly what I'm supposed to get from this movie. I would have to hear discussions on it to get more of a grasp. I watched it twice to think about it but was still a little turned off by how quickly Alice adapted to the world on just a few days. I do however give the writer credit. She had an idea in her head and she ran with it. Creative writing is something I've always enjoyed and her idea was good enough to make it on screen. It was definitely a creative concept. For that she gets props. The second half needed a lot more depth for me rather than some library books and Dirty Harry tactics. I guess that would have made the movie too long.

Questionable storyline, but adequately entertaining...
paul_haakonsen5 April 2022
Right, well the 2022 drama "Alice" starts off with 'inspired by true events'. Yeah, sure. I would like to know in what alternate part of the multiverse did writer and director Krystin Ver Linden believe that this was an actual thing.

Sure, if it was the slavery part with the white plantation owner part that was based on true events, then I could buy into it. But if it was the actual story here, then no. Just no.

Well, I will give writer and director Krystin Ver Linden points for creativity, despite the fact that the whole concept of the storyline was just ludicrous beyond belief. But yeah, the movie made for adequate entertainment, if you could get past how downright stupid the storyline concept actually is.

Of all the people participating in this movie, I was familiar with only two actors, and that was Jonny Lee Miller and Gaius Charles. It should be said, though, that the acting performances in the movie were good, despite of the storyline being quite far out there.

"Alice" is not a movie that made a particular huge splash upon its arrival, nor is it a movie that I will taking along with me and think about come next week. This is the type of movie that you watch once, should you happen to stumble upon the movie, and then never return to watch it a second time. Then again, the storyline just doesn't have enough proper contents to it to support more than just a single viewing.

This 2022 movie is a strange hybrid between an archetypical slavery story mixed with Blaxploitation. A very strange combination actually, if you ask me.

My rating of "Alice" lands on a four out of ten stars.

Not really sure why this movie was even made.

It's a clear Rip Off of DJANGO UNCHAINED (Beginning), ANTEBELLUM (middle) and COFFY (end).

Definitely film school student director vibes.

Alice in entertaining watch
dewilliams306 June 2023
Alice begins telling the story of how some slave owners were still stuck in their slavery mindset and they used fear of change to justify keeping their slaves from being free. Their anger of losing humans as property like cattle to mentally handicap other humans and believe they are entitled to determining another man's freedom and worth because of a brainwashed systemic racism society. They didn't want slaves to be educated beyond the Bible and only by their interpretation of that belief. We spent too much time in that setting for me. I'm sure it's to make a imprint affect on the audience. When Alice becomes free it's not when she escapes physically but mentally. Overall the acting and storyline created an entertaining watch. Was it a 'must watch'? No. What happened in this film is factual and documented more than 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, there were black people in the Deep South who had no idea they were free. These people were forced to work, violently tortured, and raped. Our history is their history and they rather criminalize 'woke' in meaning questioning them, being aware, being observant and not being ok with the force fed whitewashed accounts that only serves their purpose.
