Richard has given Patty his school ring, meaning the two are now going steady. Martin, who isn't fond of Richard, and Natalie reluctantly allow it since Patty insists it doesn't change anything. Richard comes over for dinner interjecting himself into the family's routine. Patty regretfully turns down a prom date with a Harvard freshman football star in town for an MGM screen test. She instead sets the date with Cathy. Richard soon gets a phone call from Sue Ellen who offers a date to go out sailing on her father's yacht, but must commit to being with Patty. Richard's father Jonathan Harrison (David Doyle, "Charlie's Angels", "Rugrats") comes over to share the same sentiments as Martin and Natalie. Cathy gives them the idea to scare them out off the steady arrangement by pushing the couple toward marriage. They each visualize what marriage would be like, leading to a formative decision and a comical surprise ending.
