Incredibly boring, unnecessary filler
aarongnr21 August 2020
I love Lucifer, I really do, but I could not get through this absolutely horrible waste of time. That's just what it is. The story is even less interesting than the normal cases of the week, because there isn't even the overarching story to make it interesting (unless that comes to play in the last 10 minutes, which I didn't see because I fell asleep).

I am normally incredibly fast to throw out 10s for episodes, but this is just... not good.

edit: So after watching the ending I'll have to say... nope, still unnecessary. The top review in this section, giving this episode a 10, says that it was important for Maze' character development. And that's true, it was. But that does NOT make the episode itsself any less boring. It was just boring. The story with her mother could've been handled in any number of different ways, and this was probably one of the worst.

Unecessary

Not what I was expecting. We got an unusual spin off or flashback episode with a spin. Only this felt like a space filler and lazy writing. A very uninspired story about the missing ring and silly conclusion. It did not add value to the series and wasted the viewers time. Another rule in television should be not to focus too much on sideline characters (Maze, Dan and Linda). They have a defined and episode filling purpose but they revolve around Lucifer and Chloe. Unless you flesh their characters out more giving them too much screen time is plain dull. Now lets get back to the main story

Necessary episode with pacing and directing issues
isabellacheng22 August 2020
This episode is crucial to giving a backstory to Lucifer's ring and setup for future motivations for Maze, so I respectfully disagree that this is a filler. Yet objectively, this is the lowest-rated episode of the entire series (till now), and I find the issues to be pacing and directing.

Some scenes drag on for far too long, for the sole purpose of exposition of side stories. Some long dialogues have neither backing music nor ambient sounds. Lilith has two songs in one episode! Not that I dislike Lesley-Ann's singing, but having the time to accommodate two full songs in one episode sounds wrong.

Next has to do with the direction. Many shows have "fun episodes" every now and then. Usually in these episodes, besides having great fun, the cast gets to shine, to be different, to show off their range of acting. Yet here, except for Amenadiel, they are more or less their usual selves. Perhaps even, a more boring version of their usual selves. They kind of left the fun in their Instagram/Twitter BTS, having barely any of that in the episode itself.

That said, I was overjoyed when I saw the Guest Starring. I suppose I shall refrain from giving this episode a rating.

I'm sorry, but this is not good

Normaly I'm a fan of such attempts to do some homage. And the episode in Moonlightning which was sets in the 40s was great and entertaining, but in Lucifer they failed.

TV Noir done right.
leeleejensen21 August 2020
As someone who doesn't like films or shows set in the prohibition area, I was disheartened at the start of the episode when I realised what was about to unfold. Thankfully through snappy dialogue and entrancing character dynamics, as well as creative cinematography, I was drawn into the formulaic-yet-intriguing plot of the episode. It could be argued to be a filler but it is a worthy admission into the lucifer universe and a solid 8/10.

Cute episode but could've been better
alooshas-2863222 August 2020
The episode's plot and the ring being stolen and all that was boring. You could just skip the "finding out who stole the ring" part and just watch the first & last 10 min that shows the importance of the ring to Lucifer and Maze.

Nice shots, very successful film-noir vibe but that's it.
batuucan26 August 2020
The story is very boring, very cliché and not funny. Swapping the characters with the people in Lucifer's story is out of context and doesn't fit. Gender swappings done wrong, where characters force themselves to play the other gender with very bad, amateur cosplay makeups and clothes.

The only good part in the episode is Lucifer and Lilith. They may be the only characters that are themselves. You can skip this episode, if you don't want to miss an important event, just skip to the ending until it is not black and white anymore and it will be enough.

Best filler ever!
secret_arash23 August 2020
I'm not trying to be a fan who supports the show no matter what but I actually loved this episode! The characters were funny and well written, the acting was perfect, the story could've been better but still it had some brilliant ideas and provides hilarious moments.

I get why many of the viewers did not like it, I agree the story was slow and not that strong, some may thought it was even boring but then again when I think about the uniqueness of the idea and how i was excited to see the actors playing new roles, I'd say it was amazing.

As respect to those who didn't like the episode, I gave it a 9 (instead of 10).

Not quite a 10
shadow-7918727 September 2020
I was born in the late 40's, so I got to see a lot of the B&W detective and other movies. This episode was a lot like the movies back then, .with the background music, especially at the "dramatic" moments. i wanted to know what was so special about Lucifer's ring. It was nice to hear Maze sing, but cast/crew hinted there was a duet with her and Lucifer, which didn't really happen since he only joined in for the last sentence of the song. Yes, all the regular actor's got a chance to show a bit more of their acting and I had to laugh at the scene where the "Sausage Prince" got shot in the foot. Everyone did their best in this episode, but from the build up by cast members in interviews, I was a tad disappointed in this episode. I don't know if its because of the writing or what. Someone said it was like a filler episode and although I love this series, this episode felt like one shot in B&W. So not giving a 10.

Beautiful !

Warning: Spoilers
The concept of this episode is beautiful

Trixie telling stories about how lucifer got his ring, and the whole noir concept touched my heart, Chloe as Male Detective and other familiar character in this episode and maze twist is also shocking. Loved it.

Horrible waste of talent & my time
sanleeden1 September 2020
How desperate the writers must be getting to include this rubbish and bring the quality of the series down so far. Absolutely boring and a plot piece that could've been filled in in three minutes or less without the 1940s garb, acting and pathetic dialogue.

However thank goodness for the "fast forward" feature. Skipped to the relevant parts to find out the story of the ring and how Maze came to be. Wish they could have told the tale without the "film noir" treatment.

I have never liked fillers, but even in black and white, Tom Ellis can still pull the whole show, can't believe its only 8 episodes.

Not as Bad as Everyone says if you know what they're doing
crsportsguy10 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Let's get it out of the way. Yes this is a filler episode, yes it's in B/W (mostly) and yes this takes a little bit of a turn from business as usual that we've come to expect but I've found once you go on in the series. It does have a key place.

First of all, I think this episode was probably a real treat for the cast to work on. A lot of people wanting to be detectives are fascinated with crime in the 40s. Cases were tougher to crack, it relied more on good police work than forensics and technology, and it was at the height of gang war and if you want to go back earlier than the 40s, it involved prohibition and chasing guys like Machine Gun Kelly (gangster not the rapper) and Al Capone. It was a interesting time to be alive for police officers. The setting of this episode will really speak to fans of the video game L. A. Noire which takes place in the same location and around the same time period. It was something new and different and the added twist of Trixie insisting that Lucifer swap out the detective he met initially and is clearly speaking from a firsthand standpoint for her mom, brings a fun element to the episode especially involving her home life with her wife Charlotte, and the fact that the 40s were not a welcome time for gay relationships, it brings a little openness to a closed time.

That being said a lot of the case itself is probably going to go down as forgettable other than using old school tactics to solve a crime as well as the 40s slang and Lauren German speaking about 2 octaves lower than she usually does. But the real tie-in is Lucifers relationship with Lilith and the history of the ring and immortality that will come back to play later in the series both in the development of the main story arc as well as the sub-story arc involving Maze and the history or lack thereof of her mother. This episode probably has more place in the series than the 2 post season 3 episodes that Fox tacked on. So it is definitely worth a watch for any fan of this series. It doesn't really progress the Chloe/Lucifer narrative. It does kind of build the relationship between Trixie and Lucifer in that "I hate children, but I will care for this one since she obviously means a lot to my love interest" mentality that he has. And just think of it as a fun episode for the cast, even if it's not your cup of scotch.

Hilarious and entertaining
sarahmercer-7322123 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Whilst this isn't your typical Lucifer episode and some may think it's just a boring filler episode they could not be more wrong. It's your typical film noir, but the story telling aspect for Trixie adds another level to it keeping it relevant and interesting. What makes this episode truly hilarious though is while everyone else in the episode plays their role seriously and to character, Tom Ellis as Lucifer is completely unchanged, bringing a hilarious contrast to the episode. Sure it may not be the high action episodes of the rest of the season it is entertaining and helps us to understand the character of Maze much better. Definitely worth watching, just for the hilarity of Lucifer refusing to bend to the slapstick of film Noir

It was all a dream...or something like that
stephendibb27 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It is never a good sign when a long running show pulls out the fantasy/ dream episode. Considering the series on or off history it is almost as if the whole team is trying out how far they can push their luck and still come back. Still, this kind of episode is such a trope in american long runners that it was almost inevitable. I would have given one less star if it had not been for the fun gender bending of the characters. Chloe does look good in a suit, tho they did not dare push it too far did they? Lucifer in Ru Paul drag would have definitely given another star!

Not as bad as expected
yincognyto-9171821 November 2022
First of all, I'm not a fan of film noir, black and white filming, musicals, or the 40s to 60s obsession in movies, and I read some reviews before watching this, so I went on watching with low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this was better than I thought it would be though.

Sure, the crime investigation was thin, but that was to be expected from the series, since the mythological and social aspect are the main attraction and the episodical cases are not meant to be at the level of other series that do them better. On the other hand, there is little going on the main plotline, apart from some quite touching and interesting moments here and there regarding the connection between Maze, her family and Lucifer, which explain what will happen in future episodes. I believe that presenting these things as a story that Lucifer tells to Trixie - and the reason why she asks for it in the first place - were very well done, much better than in other similar filler episodes from other series.

My advice is to watch this without expecting too much of it and maybe it won't be as boring as others suggest. Playing other characters was not done badly at all albeit it was more on the parody side, the gender bender was understandable since a lot of the cast are female actors anyway, and the bartender story was emotional and fit well in the overall scheme. Certainly not an under 4 mark, just like other appreciated episodes from the series are not of a 10 one either, but hey, people go to extremes these days forgetting about being objective, so there's that...

Blue Butterfly
harveythewhiterabbit31 August 2020
Why do, mostly, American shows feel the need to do this? "I've run out of ideas, so let's rewind 50 or 60 years!" Castle did it terribly with Blue Butterly and Lucifer has done it with this. This is awful. The script clunks like a toolbox falling down some stairs. The actors seem embarrassed to be in it and whoever shot it, will be crying themselves to sleep for wanting to make an actual noir. Dreadful. Not full of dread...just dreadful.
