Two criminals (Lou and Wes) take over Betty Fisher's small rural railway station at gunpoint. They matter-of-factly tell her that they plan to use her station's track switch to cause the crash of a high speed train carrying $750,000 in government currency. They gleefully advise Betty that they will be able to steal the currency and escape in the confusion caused by the injuries and deaths resulting from the crash. The terrified woman maintains sufficient presence of mind to leave her communications microphone open so that Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams are able to learn of her plight and of the need to redirect the train. They reach the station with only minutes to spare and are able to shoot Wes when he tries to force his way out. However, Dan must take drastic action when Lou tries to take Betty as a hostage.
