Mean Spirited Ellie
Johnny_West27 July 2022
Ellie makes an appearance to show her true vindictive colors in this episode. Ellie and Paskoe's daughter Rosie are visiting Ellie's mother, and she never lets Paskoe know. Ellie has stopped answering his calls, just to make sure he cannot see his daughter when she is in town. That is kind of vile if not outright evil.

The years have not been kind to Ellie. Susanah Corbett is now a few years older and a bit heavier. When she sees Paskoe she grimaces, and her face looks like a frog or Fat Andy. The resemblance to Andy is sad and scary.

Ellie always had a nasty streak to her character. From the beginning, it seemed like she was more interested in Paskoe to punish him than to love him. They were clearly opposites. In the early years, Ellie was mostly a whiny nag. Then she got a divorce and moved to the USA to make sure Paskoe rarely saw his child.

Now she is back for a few days, and when Paskoe tracks her down to see his daughter Rosie, he gets push-back from Ellie. She never lets him spend time alone with his daughter, and Ellie cuts the trip short and leaves the UK to meet her fiancee in Germany. What a totally lowclass act she turned out to be.

The end of Ellie

This really be called Dalziel and Past gones. The gritty drama and sarcastic humour is long gone and the stars are just caricatures of themselves.

This was slow and boring and even the return of Ellie gave little spark.

I have now bingewatched 37 episodes and will force myself to see this through to the end but the only light is seeing Midlands landmarks despite it being set in the north.

It's now more like a daytime soap than a tough detective series. Victims of their own success. Old rockers that don't know when to stop.

A 6 just because it was Ellie's last show.

Sad and boring

This episode has actually made me glad I'm nearing the bittersweet end of my binge. There's none of the magic from the earlier episodes and the main characters just seem to be old and tired emotionally; just phoning it in, so to speak. To add insult to injury, they've dredged up the terrible and even more annoying Ellie character from the past just to add unwonted drama to a stock footage padded episode.

If all this wasn't bad enough, they've out-sourced all the secondary cast to India and they're just there as walk on props with no character at all.

I guess they're suffering budget problems too. The entire supporting cast for the episode is terrible and were gleaned from community theater or from 'Anything For A Buck' casting agencies.

It was watchable, I guess. But that's the best I've been able to say for most episodes since around the 4th series.
